My son does a lot of fussing at the boob when his teeth are hurting. It's always tough to tell, but if he's going bananas and he's definitely not tired, hungry, wet, or bored, then I shoot down the Tylenol and it always helps a lot.
We just had Ryan's 4 month checkup and he has dropped from the 25th% for weight to the 10th%. This was over the period I was exclusively breastfeeding, no bottles. We are now definitely supplementing with bottles (pumped BM) again and I think it's for the better. As much as I dislike pumping, he just doesn't take enough when exclusively breastfeeding. On a happy note, even though we've been using bottles for 3 days he still nurses for almost every feeding, and I just top him up with an ounce or two from the bottle. I am fine with the situation and noticed he is sleeping better already.
Yeah, pumping sucks. It really, really sucks. :(
I guess I feel like it's great we were able to provide some/all breastmilk and we got through the most important bit so Herculean efforts to provide breastmilk are just silly now. They just need to eat, preferably by the most convenient means ... whatever that is is unique to each baby. Breastfeeding has turned out to be the easiest route for my son (he's good enough at it that it's easier than carrying/washing bottles) and unfortunately although my daughter can't breastfeed, I cannot find a formula that she will tolerate so pumping it is. But that darn pump. I hate it.
I hate pumping, too. I'm sure my mother would just prefer for me to drop a can of formula with her instead of my frozen bags of BM, as she's always claiming that he's still hungry when the BM that I give her runs out. I'm having a hard time again getting a let down even on my own (I NEVER get one with the pump, it just happens at random times). I'm also really wanting to get into a weight loss regimine, but every time that I try my milk is affected. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that enough milk sticks around until his first birthday!!
Yeah the pump... not my friend. Krystal I notice a drop in my supply everytime I don't eat enough. I eat more than DH these days!
I know, me, too! I eat SO much. I thought I ate a lot during pregnancy but try producing 1500 calories worth of breastmilk! Holy crap! We eat healthy meals most of the time but after a healthy meal with big huge portions I can still down an entire container of juice and a box of cookies. I eat way more than my boyfriend and he has put on like 20 lbs just being exposed to the insane amounts of food I keep in the house. I can say there's definitely no way breastfeeding if cheaper than formula if you factor in the extra food. My dad has repeatedly pressured me to cut calories and doesn't get it at all. This is no time to be focused on losing weight. I'm not gaining and I'll just deal with losing when that time comes.
I am with you all on the insane appetite lately. Just over the last couple weeks my need to eat has gone crazy. I am eating so much and I am never full. The other night I had dinner and dessert, and 20 min later I was hungry enough for another entire serving of dinner (and naturally another dessert too haha)
@Sheila, what he heck at your dad telling you to cut calories?! I wish our culture was a little more bf-friendly/understanding.
