Great idea!!! First question Do pacis really affect latch? Elaina's latch has gotten a little funny sometimes, usually right at the start (my letdown us pretty fast). She takes in a lot of air and even though I burp her a lot I worry it's contributing to her gassiness/fussiness. I don't know if it's because of the pacifier though but it seems to have gotten worse now that we are using it more. But a paci is sometimes is the only thing that calms her so I don't want to give it up but I don't want her latch to be forever ruined either.

Hilary - it never affected my DS but I do wonder if it affects Kara.

I think this will be a very useful thread. I was lurking on the BFing board last night but didn't have time to post.

Yes, I think this thread will be helpful!
I am 6 weeks out now and BFing is going very well, as in I know Allyson is nursing well and getting plenty of milk, heck she weighs like 12 lbs and is a total chunk, lol. But a few weeks ago she started making a smacking/clicking sound everytime she sucks- anyone else's LO do this? I have thought maybe she is a little tongue tied (Austin was) and her latch is slipping off a little every time...but then again, she didn't always do this - it only started when she was a couple weeks old. Or maybe she's just a noisy eater?

Kara has started to get it a little more but still doesn't nurse effectively. I'm pumping all the time...I've started stretching it out to 5 hours apart though just to give my nips a break. If this continues I will definitely be stopping when I go back to work. It almost seems more stressful than anything. When I pump I get at least 10oz in a session, but yesterday I pumped 15.5 oz in one session I usually pump, give her 3 oz in a bottle - which she never really finishes all in one sitting - and then freeze the rest and store some in the fridge for the nights. I'm freezing 20-25 oz a day and have like 350+ oz in the freezer - she isn't even 3 weeks yet! I think if/when I stop pumping and BFing I will feel so guilty but at the same time I may get some sanity back.

With DS I was able to pump a lot too but nothing like this! I literally can't leave the house without taking my pump or rushing home after 4-5 hours to pump. if I NIP I still have to pump because when my bbs fill up its really painful.

I wish she would just nurse and empty at least one side each time! I keep thinking about Angie's post how it took Luke 4 weeks (I think that is right) before he got the hang of it so I am hoping Kara will too.

    Great idea!

Hilary Ryan has had a paci from day one (they gave it to him in the NICU without asking me). I can't say it has not affected his latch because we have had so many problems, but I don't know for sure. His latch has got better over time so I am not sure it made a difference. Also, he seems to be liking the paci less and less.

Jenn, I cannot believe how much you can pump! I get about 6 ounces in a session but that is only at night and when I haven't nursed for one feeding. Wow! Unless you're trying to build a stash I would decrease the pumping a little because otherwise you will always have to deal with this oversupply and it sucks having to pump all the time so that your boobs don't explode

We are still having issues - I have no clue if they are only feeding related or what. Ryan now fusses during every feed - bottle or not. He eats fine for about 10 minutes, then briefly falls asleep, and wakes up screaming. He wants to eat again (roots for the nipple and sucks briefly) but then pulls off, screaming, arching his back, and squirms like crazy. Sometimes this results in a poop or passing gas and it gets a little better, but not always. I burp him all the time but he doesn't always burp. I try keeping him upright etc in case of reflux but no luck.

He was up all of last night squirming, screaming and fussing. I got no sleep at all. He is finally sleeping now in my wrap but that is the only way he will quiet down. He also wants to eat ALL THE TIME. Like every 20 minutes for just a few minutes. I am thinking growth spurt, but since he seems to be in pain while eating I am going to the doctors in an hour to get things checked out. Maybe silent reflux? He doesn't spit up much. I am so tired of this and need to get to the bottom of it.

Elle - the way you describe Ryan's nursing is exactly like Kara. Its so frustrating! And she fusses all night like she wants something but nothing makes her happy. Last night I may have gotten an hour of sleep!?

I recently started turning the pump off when I get 4 oz off each side. That has seemed to help. The bottles I pump into are 4 oz bottles so it was easy to just stop there and not switch out the bottles every time. Its also helped me not get so engorged. So you think I should spread out the pumping to like 6 hours if I can? When my milk comes in the horns (and Kara too) can barely stay on because I am so huge...its really crazy.

Hugs to you Elle and Jenn! Hope you guys can work out the nursing issues with your LOs.

I am so ready for my supply to even out but Allyson eats so randomly that I'm sure my bbs are going "what the heck!" Half the time she wants to eat every hour and then she takes a long nap and I'm engorged again. Then at night bc I only nurse on one side at at time, if she sleeps a good stretch I wake up with a rock hard bb (like last night) and I have to pump some of it off bc there's no way she can latch onto that. Not to mention it HURTS! Oh well..just wanted to vent.

Kim, it's rough in the beginning no matter what it seems. I hate that full feeling you are talking about. I hope it all levels out for you soon.

Hilary, I used a paci on all of my babies (not that I'm counting my first three, as I never BF them this long) but Trystan uses a paci sometimes and I haven't noticed a difference in his latch... and I've been putting a paci in his mouth since the first week lol!

Kim, like you said, she might just be a noisy eater. But, when Trystan does this sometimes, he's still hungry but has gas, so I'll pick him up, burp him, and he'll go right back to eating with no noise!

Jen, that's fantasitic on the pumping! Is Kara just not latching on? Are you bottle feeding her? If so, what type of bottles are you using?

Elle, this sounds like it could be a growth spurt. Is he latching on properly? If not it could be giving him gas as the improper latch causes more air to be gulped along with your BM. Or maybe he has a lactose intolorance? Maybe try cutting the dairy out of your diet? If it is just gas and he doesn't burp, try laying him back for a few seconds then quickly lifting him right back up, that can also help release any burps he may have.

Trystan is doing wonderfully with BF! I was certainly having some problems with BF a few weeks ago, as when I would pump here at work I was lucky to get 1oz TOTAL! I was getting so upset because my breasts were full so I know there was milk in there. After renting an electric pump and talking with a LC, I finally figured out that I wasn't getting a let down when I pumped, no matter if I was using the manual or the electric one. So at home, I started pumping (electric) while I was feeding him, since I always got a let down with him, and all of a sudden I was getting 3 oz out of just one side at one time (that's a lot for me lol)!! At work, instead of going and pumping every two hours and getting hardly anything out, I wait until I feel a let down, grab my pump, race to the restroom, and then I'm able to get about 3oz out that way! Just enough for DH or my mom to give to him the next day while I'm at work. And thanks to the electric pump (which I've now returned because I don't need it anymore) I was able to store up about 20oz in the freezer! I'm also taking fenugreek, I'm not sure if it's helped at all, but it makes me feel better taking it anyhow lol! I'm going to ask that someone sticky our little thread here, I'm so glad we're doing this!
