Well, I have come to the conclusion (for now) that Ryan simply prefers the bottle and we are dealing with a case of nipple confusion. He always eats for 10 minutes and then wants the bottle. I am now trying to take away the bottle entirely... it is very stressful. I weigh him and he gets about 1.5-2 ounces at each feed in the 10 minutes he does nurse. He still licks his lips and shows signs of being hungry after, and sometimes he cries. He is generally cranky and in a bad mood from all this.

We've been trying to supplement with a syringe (instead of the bottle) but it's not going so well... he tries to suck it and chokes, and often spits up a little after. I am nervous about the whole thing, but I really want to get rid of the bottles as I am worried about my milk supply (it seems to be dropping) and him eventually totally refusing the breast. I am setting up an appointment with a lactation consultant this week for advice.

I agree...when Allyson takes a bottle of BM, it's usually around 3.5 oz and she seems satisfied.

Good luck with the LC Elle. I hope she can give you some good help, you are doing such a great job to stick with it like you are. It sounds so hard. Way to go for persevering!!!!!!!

Thanks ladies, my morale is coming to an all time low. The last 24 hrs have been tough. Ryan ate for 10 minutes every 1.5 - 2 hrs all night, and this morning he's been snacking the entire time with 20 minute breaks in between. Since I want him to get on the boob more I am letting him... sigh. I am exhausted. Thankfully DH is on board to help. I have an appointment tomorrow with an LC - let's see what she says. We are also continuing the zantac with an increased does just in case. I wish he would just eat!

We got Sent to the Pediatric unit at the hospital for further testing. They are checking to make sure there is no infection, and to rule out other issues. Ryan has to stay for a few days and there's a cot for me to sleep on. They suspect a food allergy, likely dairy. I am meeting with a nutritionist tomorrow to discuss diet changes. I am glad I already started eliminating dairy. In the meantime he is on nutramigen formula and I am pumping to keep up the supply. If it's a food allergy they say I can try to breastfeed again 2 weeks after cutting out the item from my diet.

This makes me so sad... Breastfeeding hasn't been easy but I already miss that special time with my baby. and I am terrified he will reject nursing once I try again.

Oh no I am so so so sorry to hear you are in the hospital now, how awful!! Though I am glad they're looking into it so closely. I hope it turns out to be something manageable and you can get back to BFing. I would be heartbroken if I had to stop. Take care and keep us posted!!
