Ladies, enjoy the boobies while you have them....mine shrunk so bad after BF it wasn't even funny. I went from a nice DD to a measly flat B :( BF boobies are the best! :) I found that my growth and engorgement sorted out 6-8wks PP with Khloe. I was able to comfortably wear a normal bra at that point....although I only did when I wasn't with her and didn't need to worry about feeding.
WTH. Two days ago, I got 3 oz per session, yesterday I got MAYBE half an ounce, and today I can't even get anything to come out!!
I right there with you, my milk seems to be stopping.
Sorry you ladies are having trouble pumping enough! Are you drinking enough water? I know dehydration can affect supply big time.
I started trying to wean off the shield today, any suggestions on how to go about it? I got him latched on and he would suck a few times, then come off. We repeated the process for several minutes, then used the shield to finish the feed. Is that a good way to go, and lengthen the amount of time we go without as I can? Or is there a better way to do it?
Jessica, that's similar to what I've been doing. Aly does the same thing, but is getting longer and longer between popping off times. The LC also suggested I pump for a few minutes first to draw out the nipple, then try latching Aly without the shield in place.
For those of you who are having trouble pumping....details please. I'll be happy to give any assistance I can in that respect. Pumping is something I'm good at, unfortunately. LOL. I learned a lot of tips and tricks to get more out when pumping exclusively for DS.
What kind of pumps are you using? Do your breast shields fit properly (this is key)? What does your pump session look like in terms of length and pump settings (speed and suction)? Frequency?
I have the Medela PIS Advanced. The flex shield things seem to fit well. I sit down for about 20 minutes, pumping at max, and get an ounce. I drink a ton of water and eat my weight in oatmeal cookies
Wow, last night was a little rough. Hunter ate/fussed for over 2 hours straight! He was on one boob three times and the other twice, I usually leave him on til he starts acting like he's done, but 2 minutes later he would fuss and want more! Then of course he slept (and is still sleeping) 4+ hours, which is nice but I'm so engorged! Pumping time.
Sounds like a bit of a growth spurt or he's trying to up your supply Jessica....Karah's done this every few days....means BF is working well :) Your plan for weaning him off the shield sounds like a good one....I would also consult a LC....you mentioned having a really good LLL in your area didn't you? They could offer advice too :)
http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com...ng%20Image.pdf has a picture of correct vs. incorrect fitting breast shields. Too small would definitely limit output and seems like it would really hurt too, IMO.
20 minutes is a general rule of thumb. You can go longer or shorter. I used to go 30 minutes quite often. I found that I'd get multiple letdowns that way. Once my body got used to it, I didn't need to do that as often. As for shorter, every pump session counts...it tells your body to make more. Even 5 or 10 minutes drains a fair amount and will send the signal to make more milk. So frequency of pumping/feeding is key. I used to sometimes sneak in a couple of 5-10 minute sessions in addition to my regular ones.
What are you doing while pumping? So far, I cannot pump one side while feeding on the other (we're using the cross cradle position, so Alyssa is in the way). I found that it helped to be doing something baby-related, even just reading these boards (especially the BFing and pumping boards). If my mind was in baby mode, I made more. There were a few times I had to pump in the car in parking lots, in airport restrooms, etc....and I never pumped as much during those sessions as I did at times when I could focus on baby stuff. Put a pic of your baby in the pump bag. Oh, there was a good book that helped too for those times when I couldn't be on the boards. It's called The Milk Memos. It's basically about a group of gals who all worked full time and pumped for their babies, discussing the things that worked for them, things that didn't, struggles they went through, etc. It's pretty funny.
Other whole grains are good too, besides just oatmeal. Some folks recommend drinking a beer a day since the hops help with production. I'm not a beer girl myself, so I've not tried that one. ;-) I'm not a huge oatmeal eater. I like it, but not every day. I like it in cookies though, I have to agree. Cheerios is a good source too.
I think most of us have heard of using cabbage leaves to relieve engorgement, but I found that eating cabbage (or even brussel sprouts) negatively impacted my supply for a day or two also.
As for pumping itself....be as relaxed as you can be (but still awake...you will cry over spilling THIS milk), pump (& BF) as frequently as possible --even if it's only for a few minutes instead of the full 20 or so, make sure everything fits correctly and adjust the settings to maximize your output. Everyone's bodies are a bit different, so we may respond better to slighty different settings. Massage your boobs while pumping. This helps clear out ducts that don't necessarily respond to pumping as easily...and eventually, they will respond better on their own. It also sometimes will trigger another letdown. Warm compresses, or a warm shower before pumping also helps loosen things up and often let you pump more milk.
Oh, and yes, in the BFing section of these boards you will find several pumping related boards. I think I've seen posts from you on a couple of them already though, so you already know about those. The EPing board is kind of slow, but Shana (mod) is a wealth of info....
I hope this helps a bit...
