As for the bfing taking longer, *right now* you are right, it does. But in a few months, that will change. She will only feed for about 5 mins and get all that she needs. They become super efficient, much more than the pump will ever be. So while you are still going to be pumping for 20 mins, then cleaning all of the parts, putting the milk away, etc....in a few months, she will just pop on and off in a total of 5 mins per breast and be done with it all.
I can't wait to get this point! I'm so tired of having him attached to me every waking moment (and many sleeping moments too). I was so tired last night that I caved and gave him a bottle of formula. He downed 4 ounces and then still attached to me to eat more. I know he's getting plenty from me - you should see how chunky he's gotten. In my sleep deprived state, I've honestly wondered if he has some rare disease that makes him think he's constantly hungry, even when he's had plenty.
Well, I'm getting more confident that I'll be able to pump enough at work. DH and I went to a movie today, I was away from her for 4 hours (Grandma watched her and fed her thawed BM I had pumped last week), and when I got back, I was able to pump 2 full bottles
We picked up a PIS Advanced and some freezer baggies, then went shopping at the outlet mall with my mum and grandma. It was awesome - lots of good loot - some cute new clothes for her (and a few nice nursing friendly tops for me), a birthstone ring, a silk scarf for a lovie, and a few housewares we needed.
And the best part...we NIP twice! Once in a store (the nice employee let the four of us have a large dressing room) and once in the booth at the restaurant. We didn't use a cover or anything, just exposed as little skin as possible, and no one seemed fazed or bothered at all. (I'm less worried about my modesty than bothering someone else, but since this went so well, I have high hopes for doing it again .)
Hunter just latched and nursed without the shield!! I just decided to give it another try, and this time I made a "sandwich" with my boob, but used more boob than I had before, and after a little fussing and trying he finally got latched on! He nursed for a good 20 minutes without it! It may not happen all the time now, but I'm happy to know that he can do it!
Okay, one more pump question (now that I have it)...
When sterilizing the parts before use, do you boil the tubing as well? Also, when cleaning after use, do you wash it with soapy water or let the pump run to air-dry it (or both)?
And useful breastfeeding tip:
Avoid Moo Shu Chicken at all costs. It didn't seem to bother Ellsabunny (not much seems to faze her BFing/foodwise), but WOW did her gas stink all day today!
