Default Digital camera... Recommendations? JULY 2008

Im hoping hoping hoping that I have some extra $$ from income tax (like $200-300) for a new digital camera. I want at least 6MP, and I want it to record video (WITH sound).. that one is very important.. And I want an LCD screen to view pictures/video.. Otherwise I dont care. I dont need zoom (never use it anyway)... Any good ones to recommend? I want to start taking some good pictures instead of just candid shots... So I guess I want the nicest thing I can get for 200-300. Hmm Im going to XP this on the Photog board if I can find it.

I have a Nikon Coolpix that I really like. Don't have a clue how much it cost, DH bought it as x-mas present. Mine is 7+ megapix. Mine is kinda outdated though, it is 4 yrs old. If this one ever dies on me I will still go with Nikon brand.

I dont know much about cameras..i just have a Kodak Easyshare i think its called...lol...i like it tho, its a 10.3 mega pixels...a nice big LCD screen...and it takes decent enough videos. but i'm really just a point and shoot type of girl...i would like a nicer camera someday and learn how to take better pictures.

With that budget you can get most any point-and-shoot digital camera. You could even go after a digital SLR if you wanted.

We just have a standard Canon that is 8 mp. I like it a lot. My only complaint is on certain settings it doesn't capture movement well. But, it's just when I'm trying to not use the flash when I know I should.

I agree with Jennifer, if you are going to spend that much, you can really get a decent one - I have a Panasonic that I got after Savannah was born and I only picked it b/c I liked the way it felt and it had the big gripper kind of thing for my Fred Flinstone hands!! The small ones just didn't work for me and I was moving them too much - it took about 2 hours at Sears to find the right one but I like it - it was on clearance for about $150.

My old one that I got 2 years ago that broke was a nice-ish one... It was only $150 and it recorded sound.. Im hoping I can get something better than it but dunno.. I guess I need to look at reviews and stuff.

Think Best Buy would be a good place to look for a good one?
