Hana Marie is here
A lot has happened over the last couple days.
Hana Marie was born on 1/26/09 at 7:59. I find it ironic that I went into labor on my own about one hour after I could have had a scheduled c-section. I was originally given the choice to have a c-section on the 26th or 2/02. I had decided to wait until 2/02 closer to her due date. On Saturday the 17th the OB said the 2nd was fine since I wasn’t dilated or effaced. He told me they like to do c-sections early so there is no risk of the mother going into labor.
Little did I know…
I started feeling a bit uncomfortable the week before and was experiencing Braxton hicks, but I just figured it was part of being pregnant. So on Saturday, I went shopping with my friend. Then on Sunday the 25th, Kevin and I went to the doctor. We set everything up for the c-section since Hana was still head up. Kevin and I went out. I was active all weekend. On Monday morning, I was also active doing some cleaning and packing. I called my parents. Then decided I better take it easy because my stomach was bothering me. After a while I started to have back pain, so I decided to do some yoga to loosen my back up. Then I was going to shower and get dressed, so when Kevin got home we could run to the post office and grab a bite to eat. Kevin ended up coming home early at 2:30. He wanted to take a nap. About that time, I started getting contractions. Of course, I just thought they would go away since that would mean Hana was coming 16 days early according to her estimated due date of 2/11. So I made myself get up and get dressed. With BH contractions moving around usually gets them to stop. But they kept coming and then my back started to really hurt. I did everything I could think to relieve the back pain, but nothing worked –not even a bath. I told Kevin I couldn’t take it. The back pain was so severe. All the labor pains were located in my back because of how Hana was positioned. I started to think, "Why had I decided to schedule the c-section on the 2nd?" Kevin laid down with me and kept rubbing my back. By now the contractions were sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes less apart.
Too much information, earlier in the morning, I kept feeling like I had to go to the bathroom. I went a few times. Then once the labor pain started, I kept feeling like I had to go to the bathroom. I also felt like puking. About 6:00, I started bleeding. I had lost my mucus plug. I told Kevin he had to call the hospital.
We were told we had to get to the hospital in under forty minutes if possible. It was not a fun car ride to say the least. This is what I get for telling Kevin that I was disappointed that I was having a c-section because I was going to miss the excitement of going into labor and rushing to the hospital. I guess it is true you should be careful what you ask for.
So we arrive at the hospital. They tell Kevin to wait. They take me into the operation room. The doctor checks and I am dilated and ready to go. So they prep me as quickly as they can for the c-section. It was already decided before that it would be very difficult to deliver Hana vaginally, and I was in so much pain because of the back labor that I couldn’t stand it. If the baby would have been positioned right, I think that a natural delivery would have been quick and easy for me. I probably would have only had to labor a couple more hours; that was how quick everything was happening. To be honest the uterine contractions I had the next two days as my uterus started to shrink back to its normal size felt okay in comparison to the back labor pain.
Once I was ready, Kevin was able to come into the operating room. It felt so surreal. Everything was happening so fast, and I was unable to concentrate on all the Japanese around me. I felt so happy when I finally felt no pain. The spinal felt so weird. I couldn’t feel pain. Yet, I could feel what was going on. I could feel a pushing sensation for example. And I knew the doctor was having trouble getting the baby out. Kevin later told me the doctor said they had such a difficult time getting the baby out because her butt had descended so low. They had to force her up and out. I heard them say it was too narrow. Kevin said at one point he saw a bluish organ, what he could only assume was my stomach on my chest. Finally the baby came out. They took her away to check her and then they gave her to Kevin. At this point, I finally got to see her and find out she was a girl. Kevin held her while I got suctioned out, put back together, and sewed up. It took about an hour.
A little after nine, I got to try to breastfeed. Hana was a pro right away. She just latched on. So far we haven’t had any problems breastfeeding. She is a strong sucker. The only thing is that she tuckers herself out being so aggressive she falls asleep at the breast, and I have to keep waking her up.
It was just amazing to finally meet her and hold her. Kevin is so smitten by her. She is just so adorable. We can just stare at her forever.
I was in bed until Wednesday afternoon when I was finally able to get up and walk around. It was so nice to get up. I feel OK once I am sitting up. It is getting in and out of bed that is the worse. But otherwise, I feel really good and am ready to go home and take care of my little Hana. My mom was right that everything pretty much just comes to you; it is very natural.
I liked that the first person who got to change her was daddy. I hadn’t realized before that he had never changed a diaper. He quite a pro at it I must say.
I was a little under prepared since Hana came early. I am glad, though, that I didn’t choose her birthday. That she came when she was ready.
Thanks for Looking!

February Space #62
Proud Mommy, Beth
How I found out:
I tested two days before my period was due, just b/c I wanted to test on Father's Day. I had no symptoms, so I was shocked to see a positive!
Went in for hCG levels, first levels were about 75, second were in 200's, third levels (a week later) were 2100.
First ultrasound measured at 4 weeks, but was at 5 weeks. Saw the sac.
Second ultrasound, 4 weeks later:
Measured at 9 weeks 1 day. Due date is February 25th. Heartbeat was 179. Baby measured one inch long.
Doctor is putting me in physical therapy for back aches. I have slight scoliosis in my lower back, sciatic nerve pain, and I'm underweight. I'm on 4mg of folic acid, vitamins and baby aspirin daily.
