Alright, so I ventured into foreign fruit territory here. I tried to get them to a consistency that I know she'll like. Here's what I did:
Figs- pureed raw figs and ran them through a strainer. Figs are super seedy and I'm thinking maybe it's the seeds that's throwing her off about fruit.
Prunes- in a medium pot, I threw a large handful of prunes into about a cup of water, added a cinnamon stick, and squeezed in a whole orange. I let that stew for maybe 40 minutes. I dunno, I forgot about it at one point. Then i fished out the prunes, pureed them, and ran them through a strainer. I wanted them to be the same consistency as a mashup packet. I think I succeeded. Man are pureed stewed prunes ugly. They look an awful lot like the stuff I'm trying to get Teagan to produce ;). Anyway, they are super tasty. I hope the little fruit-hating runt likes them.
Pears- I went a different route with the pears. Instead of trying a really smooth texture like the mashups I went for the consistency of cottage cheese because she'd eat a gallon of cottage cheese if I let her. I took 2 pears, one ripe one and one really ripe one. I pureed the ripe one and ran it through a strainer. Next, I skinned the really ripe one and cut it into little pieces. I mixed the two and voila, cottage cheese-like pear concoction!
Now if only the monkey would EAT them. We'll see tomorrow ....
ETA: I saved the stewed prune juice and poured it into ice cube trays for later use.
So your frozen stewed prune juice made me think. What about making frozen fruit puree pops? Maybe should would eat more fruit in a popsicle form. Might be refreshing given its like a zillion degrees where you live.
Also what about smoothies? DS1 was hardcore about smoothies starting around 10 months. I would make them with fruit, tea or rice milk, and some herbal powder junk. I would just make sure to use room temp stuff vs. frozen to avoid brain freeze. We put them in a straw cup as smoothie kinda clogs valves in a sippy cup. Also during food strikes I would hide extra pureed veggies and stuff in the smoothie, like carrot, spinach, sweet potato, ect.
I've tried frozen fruit, frozen fruit purees, frozen juice, and smoothies. We have smoothies every morning with breakfast. You're right, if she would drink those I could hide just about anything in there. I thought she just didn't like really cold things but yesterday she grabbed an ice cube out of DH's water, chowed it down, and demanded more. She's freaking weird!
Bummer. That girl is trying to keep you on your toes! LOL
I gave Simon some chunks of chicken for the first time tonight and he did really good with them!!!! I'm surprised because he seems to gag on things that are a big harder/dense but seemed to do really well with them!!!
How is everyone doing meat?
Aiden gets small hunks of meat. I usually try to just make it really tender pieces so that the meat falls apart a bit more. He's had chicken, pork, and beef.
so I keep an "emergency" jar of organic prunes in the cupboard in case we need them. Well the past couple mornings Lucas has been having "nugget poops" followed by a regular one a couple hours later. He doesn't seem to be in any kind of discomfort, but i thought i would give him some today and he ate almost the whole jar:eek: he probably would have but i stopped him lol. He seriously loves them and was wiggling his feet and grunting at me for more. He is currently in his bouncy chair farting like crazy. dun dun dunnnn
still havn't given him any meat yet. hoping to sometime this week
Hehe. I'm careful not to let Teagan have more than say an ounce of prunes. They work!
So, it seems that Teagan is a little stinker. I've been raving about how she WILL NOT eat fruit. We saw Rowan and company last night and what does Teagan do? She eats one of Rowan's peach slices. She's just trying to make me look like a liar ;). She completely refused the pears I made for her. She gobbled up the prunes though. We're trying the figs today.
Hey Erin, I was just thiniing as Ronin was practically hurling himself at his yoghurt, is there a food she loves that you can sneak the things she doesn't love so much into. I know the prunes were a hit but for the pears and stuff to maintain some regularity
