No homemade baby food here either Molly. I don't have much time for anything and when I have the weekend I really need some down time. So I feel ya.
I won't feed baby food out of the jar for very long tho and when she gets a tooth and she starts eating the food we are eating I just make sure and mash it up really good and dice it up....has always worked for me.
Food: Banana yogurt popsicles
Age of Introduction: 6 months
Preparation: Puree banana w/ organic whole milk yogurt
Storage: Ice cube tray

On storage and heating, I'll tell you guys what I do and why.
I don't freeze things like banana (unless it's in something like yogurt) or avocado. I don't see the point? It take no time at all to mush it with a fork and give it to her, or now just hand her slices. They don't go bad but would you eat it? I wouldn't. They take on slimy textures.
What I do freeze, I stick in little freezer cubes or ice cube trays (and later transfer to bags). To thaw, I pull it out of the freezer the night before and stick it in the fridge. If I forget, I pop the cube out into a microwave safe bowl and nuke it. I never heat anything in plastic. Even BPA free plastic contains other chemicals that I do not want in my baby's (or my) food. I've read far too many scary research papers on the effects of chemicals found in plastic. These chemicals don't leach into the contents of the container at room temperature or below but add heat and the little buggers fly! Also, all a microwave does it heat your food. It doesn't put anything into your food. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't understand how a microwave works. You should never microwave breast milk because it heats unevenly and can fry those goodies that you want your baby to get but heating baby's food in the microwave is completely safe.
Repeats, but oh well.
Food: Sweet Potatoes
Age of Introduction: 5 months
Preparation: Peal, cube, steam on stove, pureed in food processer with steam water to thin it out just a bit
Storage: Freezer cubes
Reaction: I don't think he minded the taste, but the texture took him by surprise. Did better today (the 2nd day).

Food: Carrots
Age of Introduction: 5/6 months
Preparation: pealed, cut ends, steamed on stove, pureed in processor using a small amount of steam water to thin it out.
Storage: Freezer cubes
Reaction: Will update once he's had it.

Reaction: Not so thrilled by it. I think he was wondering why it tastes different than sweet potatoes.

Food: Prunes
Age of Introduction: Hasn't had the cubes yet, but 6.5 months for the juice
Preparation: Put in a pot with water and boil until softened. Make sure they are pitted. Blend with some of the water
Storage: Freezer cubes and I drained some of the water to use as prune juice diluted with water
Reaction: He really doesn't like the liquid, hasn't had the solids yet, but I don't blame him if he doesn't like it, but it's helping his poo issues.

The avocado isn't going bad when it turns brown. It's just oxidation. The same thing that happens to apples when they are left out after they've been peeled. If you want to keep avocado in the fridge for a couple days you can mash it up in a glass ;) dish and put plastic wrap on it, but make sure the plastic wrap is smashed down on top of the food, not just "over" it. Keep the air out of it and it will keep it fresher looking longer.Quote:

This week we're doing Sweet Potatoes... so far it's kind of like the squash it's just "eh" for her. She's a cereal lover though, which is good :)
We're sorta switching gears and going for the baby led weaning route. At least when we're at home. I can't expect my day care to deal with her flinging food everywhere ;). For anyone who isn't familiar with BLW, the premise is that you give baby the choice of how much to eat. You do this by putting the spoon down and presenting baby with finger foods from the start. It has three major benefits: 1) Baby learns valuable fine motor skills by self-feeding 2) Baby weans at his/her own pace because he/she decides how much to eat 3) Baby feeding time doesn't require you to sit there the whole time and shovel spoonfuls into his/her mouth. The drawbacks are 1) Food food everywhere (at first) 2) Finding food that baby can handle (at first) can be challenging 3) Baby won't eat very much at all at first so this probably isn't the best tactic if you're worried about actually getting food into baby.
Since I'm still making her food, I figured I'd keep posting my BLW foods here. Here's what we've tried so far:
avocado spears - yeah, that's when we found out she's allergic to avocado. She liked them though and got quite a bit in her mouth. They are a bit slimy, so they were squirting all over the place. I've heard you can roll slimy things in crushed up cheerios (or other cereal) to make them easier to handle. Haven't tried that yet.
banana spears- you can split bananas into thirds by gently squeezing them. They make perfect little baby sized snacks. T loves them and really loves to make a giant mess with them.
kamut puffs- These are just organic kamut (a grain) cereal puffs I found in the regular cereal aisle. I think a big bag was like $3. Baby puffs are filled with all sorts of junk (kinda ridiculous IMO) and they are pretty pricey. These are kamut and kamut alone. She goes bonkers for them. She does really well with chewing them. They pretty much melt in your mouth.
Oatmeal- When I thaw my little oatmeal cubes they hold together well enough for her to grab them and mush them into her mouth. She likes them.
Scrambled eggs- I just scrambled one egg and cut it up into strips. Eggs are on the No No list but I talked with my pediatrician and he said I could go ahead and try it. She liked them a lot!
I'm not fully doing BLW, but am going to introduce some self feeding once we get the highchair, just because it is easier to clean up than the bouncer. In the info child health gave me regarding food they actually advise against BLW, but it didn't really explain why, then again it was in the one produced by a baby food company.
Anyway back to my point which was foods for BLW, I steamed some sweet potato into long chunks to try as finger foods.
Ronin tries to grab the spoon all the time so I think he might like the self feeding.
i have given lucas the spoon a couple of times and it usually goes into his forehead. so sometimes i let him hold it and kinda steer it towards his mouth if he is having trouble lol
