CAROLE'S SPACE

I am claiming my space here as well Smile
So, I am Carole and this will be my 6th pregnancy. I have a beautiful girl (Kelly-Anne, 8 yo), a big boy (Raphael, 6 yo) and a sweet baby (Nicolas, 2.5 yo). After Nico, I had a chemical pregnancy, then I got pregnant again. I carried my sweet Olivier until 37 weeks, when a cord accident occured and we lost him. I had him on October 20th 2009. he was the most beautiful boy in the universe Smile And I feel like he is in Heaven watching over us and protecting this brand new soul that I am carrying.

I had my BFP on Feb. 1st, and my due date is October 11th 2010. I will most likely have the baby in September as my doctor won't let me go over 38 weeks because of what happened to Oli.

First doctor appointment is tomorrow Feb. 5. I will then be reffered to a hematologist as a clot disorder was discovered from all the testing after I had Oli. I will need to inject myself with fragmin twice a day until 2 weeks before they induce me, at whcih point I will use heparin. I am nervous about that, but I,ll do everything in my power to have a healthy baby next Fall.

APPOINTMENTS

Feb. 5. 1st doctor appointment. Got a lot of paperwork to fill out for my job, and I got a reference to see the hematologist. Seeing her next Tuesday. Blood work have to be done, will get around it next week.
Feb 9. saw the hematologist today. Had blood drawn, then started the blood thinners. I have to take aspirin every day, plus an injection of Fragmin. The medication actually hurts while it is being injected, but it doesn't last long, so no big deal. It leaves a nice blue dot, though, my belly will be funny to look at this summer when I will rock my bikini!
March 12. Doctor's appointment. Weight, bp and the usual exams. He tried to hear the HB but I am only 9w5d, so he couldn't. I am not surprised. But, he will see me next Monday for a quick ultrasound! so much fun!
March 15. Went at the hospital for a quick look at gummy bear. So cute! We saw the heart beating away, and it was wonderful! I am getting excited now.
April 5. went in for the triple screen test. The ultrasound went great. We saw the baby perfectly, and it was moving around and kicking me like crazy. I was happy to see the baby move as I haven't felt it in the last couple of days and I was very nervous. I was sacred the baby was dead, so I cried a lot when we saw it move around. The doctor thinks we are having a little girl!!! I am so happy about that. I will wait until my 19 weeks ultrasound before I celebrate properly, but I am very excited Smile

About me
I did it, I turned 31 (shhhhh.....I'm not telling anyone else that I went and did that) recently. I have been married to the love of my life, Scott for 6 wonderful years. I have an 11 year old DD from a previous relationship and an 18 month old DS. We spent 4 years TTC DS, spent thousands on fertility treatment, finally quit and got pg within 3 months. This time we started TTC in June 09, got pg in August, m/c'd in September and finally got our BFP on Valentine's Day!!! We are elated, but very cautious. You girls are the only ones that know as of right now.

I also play volleyball still on a competitive coed league, which I won't quit doing until I'm too uncomfortable.

I live and breath horses and I really miss riding when I'm pregnant, but it's just too uncomfortable for me. I'll add some pictures later of the campsite we go to almost every weekend in the spring and fall with the family and the horses and spend the weekend riding. It's in the Shawnee National Forest and is some of the prettiest scenery in the world!!!

DH (Mark - 36yrs) and I (31yrs) have been married for 5 years. We tried to conceive for several years but were told that it was highly unlikely I would ever get pregnant. We had always planned to adopt after our first baby, so we just moved the timing up a bit. We were blessed with our DD, Shiloh in October 2007. In June 2009, we brought home our sons from Uganda. These kids have brought so much joy into our lives and we can't imagine life without them!

In November we went to a fertility specialist to discuss embryo adoption. We were hoping to start the process sometime in 2010. After discussing my medical history with her, she shocked us both by saying she believed that we had been misdiagnosed and using a different medication, we would be able to conceive. DH was thrilled! I was skeptical and cautious since I had moved past all the drama of TTC and wasn't sure I wanted to go there again. She asked us to try again for a few cycle which I reluctantly agreed to. Much to my surprise and amazement I became pregnant our first cycle. We are all looking forward to the addition of this LO to our family. :grouphug:

Thought I would delete this since Sean Thomas was born to early and I never got around to it.

Congrats to all you new (soon to be) mothers here, I have been checking up on you all from time to time.

About Me:
My name is Dawn, just turned 30
DH is Eric, also 30
We will be married for 5 years come May
We have a daughter, Olivia who just turned 3. She was a preemie - born at 26 weeks 5 days for unknown reasons. She is doing wonderfully now & you would never know she was a preemie!

It took DH & I a while to feel like we were ready to TTC & potentially go through having another preemie with NICU stay, etc. (having one preemie puts you at higher risk of having another). We started TTC 8 months ago.

How I learned I was pregnant/told DH:
I had my 30th birthday on Feb 3 & got a + OPK that day and the next.....well, I got my birthday present this week....a BFP!!!!!!
On CD 31 I took a HPT and was about to throw it away & wanted to cry in despair, I did a double take. I thought maybe I was losing my mind but I thought I could see a faint hint of a line. I kept studying it & was pretty sure there was a line - compared it to an unused test to make sure there wasn't a line on that one (there wasn't). I tested later in the day & same thing.
DD & I went shopping that day & stopped to pick up a T-shirt that said "I'm the big sister" - I decided a while ago that that's how I wanted to tell DH. I didn't tell him that day though - I waited until the next day & retested in the AM to be sure there was a line again. It was still faint though, but darker than the previous day. DH had the day off with me so I put the shirt on DD & she ran out to the kitchen to show daddy her new shirt. (She doesn't know what it says). He looked at me & cautiously asked - what does that mean??
I tried taking a picture of my BFP today but when I zoom it gets so blurry, so that will have to wait for now.

10/25/10

Appointments:
3/4/10 (6 weeks) - discussed the plan for this pregnancy - what we will do to prevent preterm labor this time. I was put on a 20 lb lifting/pushing restriction. At 16 weeks I will begin 17 P injections that DH will give me weekly to prevent contractions. At 18 weeks I will have a cervical length checked by Ultrasound (more to follow if this shows any concern). Weeks 20-32 will include more activity restrictions.
3/23/10 (9 week 1 day)
- Surprise visit due to slight spotting but mostly due to abdomen/back aching that was almost cramp-like. Couldn't hear heartbeat with abdominal doppler but we got a surprise peak via ultrasound! Baby measured 8 weeks 4 days (coincides with ovulation/conception date). Baby looked great, heart beat strong & 180 bpm.
4/1/10 (10 weeks) - Still couldn't hear baby's heartbeat with the doppler. The office's portable U/S machine wasn't available & my OB said since I just had an U/S last week she didn't want to charge me for a full ultrasound again. According to my LMP I'm 10 wks 3 days today but....as stated previously the U/S showed me a few days behind that. Most likely it's still too early to hear & when I had my U/S last week they said that my uterus was tipped to the back which can make it harder to find the heartbeat. SO...I go back in a week from today to try for another listen. About 90-95% of me is OK with this, everything sounds logical, but 5-10% of me of course worries that maybe something is wrong. I'm just trying to remind myself that I still have symptoms...nausea, tired, very sore breasts. Otherwise nothing much to report!
4/8/10 (11 weeks) - Once again, we couldn't hear the heartbeat with the doppler, so we quickly grabbed the portable U/S machine. At first when the picture popped up on the screen all I saw was a still baby and I had a moment where my heart sunk thinking that there was no heartbeat; but then they turned on a coloring device that illuminated the heart & we could see it beating away. Then the baby started wiggling all over, arms & legs flying everywhere! What a relief!!
5/7/10 (15 weeks) -
This time we could finally hear the heartbeat with the doppler! Picked it up almost right away, 150-154 bpm! The rest of the appointment was spent answering my questions Smile After that I headed to the lab to have blood work drawn. I didn't realize that they had ordered blood work for me to be drawn at one of my last appointments already so I went ahead & did that. The results that I've seen so far look good (to me).
My OB also called in my prescription for the medication that we will be using to help prevent preterm labor, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (or 17P).
I also set up my first cervical length check (with U/S) as well as my big U/S for May 27 (when I'll be 18 weeks) - it's also DH & I's 5th wedding anniversary Smile

5/9/10 - Started my my first shot (in the butt) of the 17P. I had read varying reports from other women who've had it that it hurts pretty bad, so I prepared myself for the worst! The poke itself, was not bad at all. Injecting the solution was definitely uncomfortable with quite a burn. Long after DH had the needle out, I thought it was still in because it continued to burn. It burned a lot in the first 15 minutes, and then occasionally for the first 1 1/2 hrs or so. So, being not very pleasant, it is not all that bad either. If it helps prevent another premature birth it will be well worth it! I just remind myself that a little poke weekly will be nothing compared to what a premature baby would have to endure in the NICU!! So this will be a part of our Sunday routine now until the baby is born!
If anyone's interested....just a bit of information about the medication & it's success that I pulled off the internet....."Superior outcomes have been reported in women treated preventatively with weekly intramuscular injections of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, also called 17P. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has promoted the use of 17P injections since 2003, following two randomized placebo-controlled trials. In both studies, the participants were women who had experienced a previous singleton preterm birth. In the larger study, women received the progesterone injections starting sometime between weeks 16 and 21, and continuing until delivery or week 37 whichever came first. Women in the 17P group had 34 percent fewer premature births than women given the placebo, and there was a reduction of 42 percent in the rate of preterm births before 32 weeks."

We had our big U/S done today (on our 5 year wedding anniversary) Smile
Good new is, with my cervical check, my cervix was measuring nice & long, the way we want to see it!
Then they moved to an abdominal scan & checked everything else out. My placenta is anterior & a bit to the left of my abdomen which maybe explains why I haven't felt as much pronounced movement yet. Baby is obviously VERY active!!!! I don't know if it ever stopped moving throughout the entire scan, which was really long! Baby is measuring right on target with my EDD. Everything measured well...head, spine, heart, etc. The only thing they saw of concern was that both kidneys were slightly larger than they would like to see them. SO, we had to wait for one of the perinatologists to come & rescan me & talk w/ us. It was kinda neat because he got to meet DD & he is the one that delivered her by emergency C-section for us! Anyway, so what it means that they kidneys are slightly enlarged....1) "soft" marker for Down Syndrome although everything else looked fine that would possibly be other flags for Downs - so I think he said this would be a 1/400 chance. We didn't do any of the 1st trimester or Quad Screens either (FYI). 2) Could be an anatomical condition where the ureters are constricted & causing the kidneys to dilate. 3) It could be nothing! (Hoping for this one!!!!!!)
After the fact, I met with my OB & she said not to worry about this. She said in her 30 years of experience, she has never seen this to turn up to be anything. She advised me not to look up info on the internet - which I will try to follow! She said the last thing I need is to add more stress hormones to my body (already worried about preterm labor, etc).
So the plan is, continue my cervical checks every 2 weeks via U/S & we can peek at the kidneys if we want at the next scan. Otherwise, we will do another "growth" U/S in 4 weeks to check everything out again. She doesn't feel that we need to do the growth scan, but she said if it would make me feel better, we can go ahead with it since the peri recommended it.
My OB really recommended that I get set up with the hypnobirthing classes offered by her partner, which is something I wanted to do anyway. I can't do the June class b/c of planned vacation, but I signed up for the July classes. She gave me the books & CD's though because she wants me to be as relaxed as possible, and as she said, to ENJOY this pregnancy!!! Smile
BTW - we didn't find out gender either - waiting for the surprise!
FYI...the 17P shots have been going better - not nearly the burning if DH injects the solution VERY slowly!!

6/10/10 (20 weeks)
I had my 2nd transvag U/S today to monitor whether my cervix is shortening or not. We also peeked at the kidneys with my scan today & they were still enlarged but my OB said really it's not worth looking at them again til 28 weeks or so because if they're gonna resolve, it won't be this quick. She said if I weren't getting scans every 2 weeks, they wouldn't recheck the kidneys til 28 wks or so anyway.
So anyway, at my scan today, again good news, my cervix was still very long, 4.1-4.4 cm!
Bad news was, she said there is a marginal/partial previa. My OB left to view the images herself with the high risk OB doc & came back & said she couldn't be sure from the pictures whether it's a placenta previa or vasa previa. She drew me a picture where baby's head is down near the cervix with amniotic sac & umbilical cord right down there with the head at the cervix & the placenta was resting on top of the sac & cord. She could't tell where the cord was inserted. She said it could be just the way things were positioned at the moment & hopefully when we rescan in 2 weeks things will have improved.
She took me off of work but didn't necessarily put me on bedrest...light work around the house OK, NO lifting, OK to go to park w/ DD but don't lift her, etc. Seems confusing to me. I'm not sure if it's it in my best interested to park my butt on the couch?? Also vaginal rest. DH & I were going to leave tomorrow w/ DD for a driving trip to visit his family but she advised us not to go.
My OB said if it IS vasa previa, that would mean a repeat C-section. From the bit that I've researched so far, the biggest risk is to the baby at birth?
I'm sitting here wondering what the chances of repeat are on this - DD's birth was pretty unexpected. I started contracting & when I went in to the doctor my amniotic sac was "Hourglassing" down into the birth canal. When they scanned me the cord was prolapsed so they did an emergency C-section. As I'm thinking, I wonder if DD's sac & cord were sitting at my cervix too & that's why it presented 1st?
I'm anxious to get these next 2 weeks done & see what the next scan shows! I hope things look better & I can rest a little easier!
Oh, and I double checked with the nurse, I've gained 9 lbs since I was 1st in at my 6 wk appt. She said that's great & now it should be about 1 lb/week. I just hope my restricted activity doesn't cause me to pack on the lbs. faster than that!!

6/16/10
So I went in today because I was getting worried at home that I was having contractions for the last few days. No contractions showed up after 30 min. on the contraction monitor Smile Also checked a cervical length which was a bit shorter than the previous week 3.5-3.9 cm. I'm told this is still good though.

6/23/10 (22 weeks)
Today marked my 22 week appointment. As usual, I had my ultrasound first & then my appointment with my OB. Overall, things looked good!
First, they checked my cervical length. It is shorter than what it was previously, now at 3.3 cm (two weeks ago it was 4.1-4.4), but they said that was still good - as long as it was more than 3 cm they are happy. Of course, I don't like the change, but will have to take their word on it. I learned that this length can fluctuate from check to check. As there is less pressure from the baby (as the baby grows the head won't sit so low in the pelvis), it can cause the cervix to lengthen some. It also can be affected by one's activity - how much I'm up & placing more pressure with gravity. So, she said it is in my best interest to take it as easy as possible & continue our current plan - no working & modified bedrest at home at least until I hit the 28 week mark.
Second, the placenta placement is NOT an issue!! The area of concern seen at 20 weeks must have all been due to how the baby was positioned. Neither the umbilical cord or placenta were near my cervix!! One less thing to worry about!
Third, they checked baby's size by measuring the head, abdomen, femur, etc & estimated it to be about 1 lb 3 oz. She spent quite a bit of time trying to get some good pictures of the heart since I guess they were only able to get a limited view of the heart at my 18 week scan. They said everything looked good. Also, kidneys were rechecked, and basically unchanged. One measured 4 & one measured 6 (there cutoff for normal is a 4) so I guess we'll look at that again later - we didn't really discuss this today.
The ultrasound tech printed out quite a few pictures today and even took some 3D pictures for us!! This is a little eerie because you can actually see the contour of the eyes, nose, forehead, lips, but yet we don't know whether we're looking at a boy or a girl!! And of course, at this age, they have such little fat so they look a little "funny" for lack of a better word.
I'm not sure what's wrong with our computer, I can't get it to accept any CD's so I can't upload my U/S pictures. I'll have to work on that!

7/7/10 (24 weeks)
I was exactly 24 weeks on 7/5. I was really hoping to see 24 weeks come & go behind me uneventfully, but that wasn't the case...
I had my 17P (progesterone) shot Sunday (#9 so far!), but Monday morning I was having a more contractions (the progesterone is suppose to help with this), a few/hour from the time I woke up. (Usually I don't have more than a few contractions/day). Did the usual recommendations....took a bath, drank water, emptied bladder & no change. I think the on call OB person didn't think I needed to come in, but w/ my history with DD coming at 26 weeks 5 days, I decided not to mess around & went in anyway just to be safe.
Good news - my cervical length was unchanged if not better - 2 weeks ago the shortest measurement they took was 3.3 cm & yesterday my shortest measurement was 3.4 cm. Also, they said I was not dilating either.
On the contraction monitor they say I just have an "irritable" uterus & they aren't really contractions that count; but I feel my stomach tightening & pressure with it. They had me take a few doses of ibuprofen every 6 hrs since yesterday AM to see if that helped. They said "on paper" everything looks OK, but with me being nervous & my history, decided to watch me overnight. I was in OB triage for about 2 1/2 hrs and then they moved me to a room in High Risk OB.
The contractions don't hurt, I just notice a tightness/pressure in my stomach & can feel my stomach get hard. This is how they started w/ Olivia as well. I get them when I'm laying down & resting as well as just shifting position from my back to my side.
They put me on the contraction monitor again before bed last night & again in the morning & still call it "uterine irritability". I had an ultrasound the following morning (7/6) and there was no change in my cervical length, so that is very reassuring! So whatever these contractions are, at least so far, they are not causing my cervix to thin or anything.
While this is reassuring, I'm still very nervous about everything!
Typically all I'm experiencing wouldn't be all that alarming, & like I said, they would have sent me home earlier. But the contractions scare me like crazy! I'm home now & have a prescription for a medication that I can take if I feel like I need it if the contractions increase in frequency.
This morning they did a routine glucose screening to check for gestational diabetes and I passed this no problem Smile Glucose was 119. Since I had this done, I also opted to be on the safe side, and they gave me a shot of betamethasone, which is the steroid given to help mature baby's lungs. I will get another shot tomorrow when I go in for my usual OB visit. (They wanted to check my glucose before giving me the steroid since the steroid could raise my glucose level).
Once again (as with Olivia), there is no explanation as to why I started to contract so much more than usual, no apparent infection, etc. So, I will continue to take it easy (Obviously, bedrest continues!), hope that the contractions don't get any worse and pray that this baby stays put much much longer!!!
I had my routine appointment today (7/7) with my usual OB.
She did an exam & said that my cervix is low, firm & closed - all good!! She also did a test today called a fetal fibronectin that predicts one's chances of preterm birth. It is most accurate if the test is negative...I found this info online...
"If you receive a negative fFN result, you have a less than 1 percent chance of delivering in the next two weeks. A positive result means that your risk of delivering sometime before you reach 35 weeks is higher, and your chance of giving birth in the next week is about 16 percent."

My test was NEGATIVE!!! So, she said I have a 98-99% chance of NOT delivering within the next two weeks Smile That puts us close to DD's arrival date. My OB did stress though, while this is reassuring, I should not ignore my symptoms & to take note if they change in any way. Also continue all of what we have been doing to prevent complications....bedrest, etc.
I'm very relieved to hear this - I don't know what I would've thought if it was positive, even though it's not as conclusive as a negative result.
I also received my 2nd dose of steroids for baby's lungs.
I took my 1st pill today (procardia) that is suppose to help with the contractions & have noticed a bit of a decrease in their frequency, so that is a relief - both physically & mentally.
I also started my hypnobirthing class tonight - another 1st for me!!! I never got a chance to do prenatal classes w/ DD so this is exciting Smile

7/21/10 (26 weeks)
Today was my 26 week appointment. Everything went very well!!!!!!
We started with my ultrasound, and my cervix is holding up very well. It is unchanged from where it has been over the past 4 weeks Smile The 1st two measurements were even at 4.0 cm  but the next few were at 3.5 cm, so that is what she recorded. But that's exactly where I was the past 2 scans. So I'm very happy with this! We also learned that baby has moved positions yet again. Four weeks ago baby was head down, two weeks ago baby was transverse/sideways, and today baby is breech/butt down!!! I know there's a lot of activity going on in there Smile Just so baby returns to head down before it's time to come out, we're all good!
After the ultrasound was my usual visit with my MW. Everything else looked good - my blood pressure, weight, fundal height, etc are good. (I've had a headache all day Monday & Tuesday, even through the night - so my 1st thought was what if my BP sky rocketed - but it didn't; still 110/62.) I expressed concern about worrying that I will gain weight more quickly with me just laying around so much. She did give me the OK to go for "short, leisurely walks" and to lift some 5 lb. hand weights so that I at least have some sort of muscle to carry a baby around in a few months! Just as long as I'm not doing any heavy lifting or pushing. I thought I was going to be + 4 or 5 lbs since 2 wks ago about it was only 2 lbs, so I'm happy with that! I think I'm at 15 lbs total now.
The nurse asked me if I was really nervous this week (she was actually one of the NICU nurses when DD was in there!), knowing that this is the week Olivia arrived, but I'm actually just very excited!! Once I hit Sunday, I will be the most pregnant I've ever been and I'm so so excited!!! I'm on :cloud9: right now -just feeling upbeat & confident that 26 weeks 5 days will come and go and hopefully be left far behind in the dust!!!
I've already almost completed one "first" for this pregnancy and that is going through prenatal classes (hypnobirthing) - I have class number 3 of 4 tonight Smile I also am working on scheduling some pregnancy photos with the gal that took our family pictures last summer - this was another thing that I wanted to do with Olivia, but didn't get a chance to do.
My next appointment is in 2 weeks and it will be a lengthy one. I will have my usual ultrasound to check my cervical length along with a "growth" ultrasound to recheck the baby's kidneys. I have to redo my glucose screening for gestational diabetes, which I did 2 weeks ago when I spent the night in the hospital. I passed it then, but I guess the accuracy at 24 weeks isn't very good compared to doing at 28 weeks. So lucky me!! I will also have my usual visit with my MW and also a visit with the Perinatologist (high risk OB doctor) for routine VBAC counseling.

7/28/10
I finished my hypno birthing classes today!! One thing accomplished that I never got to start or finish with DD!!

8/4/10 (28 weeks)
So, had my appt today (28 weeks 2 days)....I'm still trying to process everything - I have mixed emotions, everyone else seems to still be optimistic about everything, but I of course have to be the worrier. DH keeps telling me I need to relax.
First of all started with my cervical length which dropped to 2.5 cm - it has been 3.5 cm for several weeks. On manual exam I was told my cervix was closed, soft & 50% effaced. Also, baby's kidneys are still enlarged & have gotten larger than on last check - I think 6 weeks ago. So the peri came in the u/s room to look around himself & discuss everything with me. Asked if I had been having cramping, contractions, etc. I have had a few more contractions the past few days - but nothing near the limits of when they say to call (4-6 per hour). I mostly notice them when I stand up to head to the BR, etc.
He talked a bit about betamethasone steroids for the lungs - but told him I'd had it at 24 weeks. He said if he thought I was about to deliver, he would repeat it, but he doesn't think I'm at that point yet.
Our "VBAC counseling" took place while the u/s tech was trying to get good pictures of the heart & did an echocardiogram - the dilated kidneys is a "soft" marker for Downs so they were trying to get good pictures. I think baby was on a sugar high from the glucola I drank an hour before & didn't want to cooperate well. But they are quite confident the heart looks good (as it did last time they checked also), which decreases the risk of Downs, so we will just watch the kidneys - either urine refluxing into kidneys or narrowed ureter - things that we can determine/fix if needed after birth.
So anyway, he said I'm a very good candidate for VBAC. My scar is low transverse; chances uterine rupture They guess baby to be about 2 lbs 14 oz which puts it at 64th percentile - measuring about 1 wk ahead. Which matches up to the fundal height my MW got later - 29 weeks.
Thankfully my MW is just down the hall from the peri so they chatted briefly before I saw her. She was very optimistic & said the peri was optimistic about how things were looking. Why don't I feel very good then? I just feel uneasy - I guess mostly with my cervix - I don't like the change. She said not to dwell on the cervical length - this is just today, & the cervix is very "dynamic" - she said we could recheck tomorrow & it could be 3.5 cm, who knows?
I got a refill for my procardia, can increase the dose & see if I notice less contractions. I will try to take it easy, although the peri told me bedrest isn't proven to be effective, which I've heard - but I have been up & about a bit more than the previous weeks since my MW said I didn't need to be laying constantly. So maybe that was part of my deal.
And, during the u/s we tried to determine baby's gender today - for my MIL - I had my eyes closed - we were going to have the tech right it down & seal it in an envelope (hang on to it til maybe 35 weeks then send it to her) but baby wouldn't cooperate!!
Oh & my glucose was 118 (it was 119 at 24 weeks, so very consistent); glad I passed Smile I got kinda sick to my stomach from that stuff this time.

(29 weeks)

August 27 (31 weeks 4 days)
I had another appointment yesterday - 31 weeks 4 days. I am so excited to say that I'm almost 32 weeks (on Monday). Today marks being pregnant for 5 more weeks than I was with DD!!!!!
So, the first thing they checked on ultrasound was my cervical length as usual. It was around 2.6 cm which is very similar to where it has been at the last few checks. This is still slightly short compared to "normal", but I am thankful for no dramatic changes there! I was a bit concerned that it might be shorter since I had more contractions than usual over the weekend & the last few days. This is the last time that they plan to do a cervical length!
They estimated baby's weight to be at 4 lbs 6 oz, so baby is still measuring slightly ahead of schedule. This is double of DD's birth weight - she was 2 lbs 3 oz!!!! I looked back, at this gestational age, DD was only between 3-3 1/2 lbs. So, almost 5 lbs sounds SO awesome to me!!!!!
We got some fun 3D pictures of the baby too - you can see some chub in the cheeks already (see below).
Baby is still head down (yay!) - I just hope it continues to stay this way now!
The whole appointment was very good, except we still have the unknown of the kidneys. They are still measuring large. At this age, the reference range is 7; baby's kidneys today were 10 on the left & 14 on the right. From what he could tell, the high risk OB doc said the kidneys themselves look normal in character, just large. So, this leads him to think it is not a problem with the kidneys themselves, but either reflux or a blockage in the ureter leading to the bladder. My amniotic fluid level was normal, so that also tells him that the kidneys are functioning & baby is urinating adequately. He wants to continue to check ultrasounds every two weeks to make sure my amniotic fluid levels don't decrease (which could mean baby's kidneys aren't working adequately). If there would be a drastic change then they would talk about needing to deliver baby sooner (crazy talk - all I've been doing this pregnancy is trying to keep this baby IN!!), but it's not an issue now. My fluid level was 19 and he said they wouldn't get concerned unless it hit 9 or below - so we're quite a ways from that.
He did give us the option to consult with the Pediatric Urologist and/or Nephrologist prior to the baby being born just so we know what to expect, etc. DH & I will talk this over and see what we want to do. It would be nice to know if it's something that we can anticipate that would need intervention soon after baby is born or if it would be a wait & see thing? Otherwise, what we know for sure is to expect that after the baby is born, they will do an ultrasound on the baby to check the kidneys again & at that time consult the appropriate doctors.
I'm starting to get the feeling like this baby is a boy - I think the face looks like a boy? And from what I've heard, it's more common for boys to have these kidney/bladder issues than it is for girls?
I also got the Okay to return to work soon....after Labor day when I will be 33 weeks...and for shorter shifts. I will start out with just 4 hours at a time; still no lifting > 20 lbs. We'll see how that goes and how my body reacts to the increased activity and go from there! I don't want to over do it, but I do know that I'm not in shape like I was before starting bed rest because I get tired very easily. I hope I can handle it!!

AIDEN'S BIRTH STORY:
When I still had no signs of labor at my 41 week OB appointment, I scheduled an induction for 41 weeks, 3 days (Monday, November 1st). I arrived to the hospital at 3:30pm that day (still no signs of labor). The OB started me on cervidil at 8pm. At 10pm I started having contractions anywhere from 10-15 minutes apart. Throughout the night I walked and moved around and got contractions to be longer and closer together. At 4am they started me on pitocin. At 8am the OB broke my water. Contractions really took off from there (a minute long, 2-3 minutes apart). Since I was on pit, I had to be monitored off and on but was able to move around the room within reason. At noon on Tuesday, November 2nd I was checked to be 4cm. At that point contractions were very intense. I had been doing great until then dealing with the contractions, but that became very tough when they turned to 1 ½ minutes long (sometimes longer) with only seconds from the end of one to the start of the next. The next two hours were really rough on me as the contractions became even worse. The nurses insisted that I had to be monitored more often, so I wasn’t able to move around. DH later told me that the contractions monitor kept reading my contractions as so strong that they often went off their chart. At 2pm I asked to be checked. No progress had been made. I asked for the epidural because DH and I felt that the pit contractions were too rough for me to relax enough to let them work well. The epidural went great, but I absolutely hated it with a passion. While I welcomed the relief, I hated the loss of control over the bottom half of my body. An hour after the epi, Aiden’s heart rate dropped very low (down to the 50s at one point) for 3 minutes. It was awful. After that the pit was stopped. I still hadn’t made any progress. The pit resumed later on when the OB approved it. By 8pm that night I was told that I was having great looking contractions, but I still hadn’t progressed past 4cm and that Aiden’s head was at -1. DH and I discussed having a c-section at the OBs suggestion. By then, I wanted the whole fiasco over with. I was miserable and it appeared that Aiden was just not going to come at all. When I still hadn’t made any progress at 10pm, I was wheeled into the OR. Aiden was born at 10:23pm with scores of 8 and 9. He was 20 ¼” inches long, 8lb 7.9oz, and had a 14 ½” head. The OB said after the c/s that he didn’t think that Aiden could have ever been born naturally. I think if I had progressed, Aiden could have been born naturally but with injury to the both of us. Aiden as it was had bruises and broken blood vessels from the labor. I hate that I didn’t get the natural birth I wanted, but I am so grateful to finally have Aiden in my arms! He is absolutely perfect in every way. Once I was able to be united with him, he immediately breastfed well. A week later he is back up to birth weight and is a dream baby. I thank God every day for my healthy son.

About me: 31 (will be 32 at time of birth), full-time student, work part time.
About DH: 34, ridiculously excited to be a father

Married 3 years, TTC since September, but skipped a month because I didn't want an end-of-August baby.

First pregnancy for both of us. First grandchild on DH's side, fourth on mine. I'm pretty small, and my family has a history of giant babies, so I'm a little frightened.

First ultrasound: 2/22/10 - saw the heartbeat!! DH managed not to cry in front of the doctor.

Info:
Hi I am Ashley. I have been married to my wonderful dh,Glenn for almost 3 years.
We have a perfect little handful of a son named Trevor. He was born March 7, 2008 after a hard labor that ended in a c-section. He was sunny side up and had his cord wrapped around his neck 3 times.
This time we are going for a repeat c-section. This very well may be our last baby, so I am enjoing every second of this pregnancy.
My handsome dh and ds! Smile

Last year we had a rough time ttc and that pregnancy ended with a ectopic pregnancy. That was one of the worst things that has ever happened to us..

This december we decided to ttc again. We did not want to do charts. I admit I looked at my chart AFTER we dtd that month just to see if we even dtd near ovulation and.. for jan.. when I looked we didnt! low and behold God had a plan for us and we were indeed pregnant with a cute little beanie in the right spot.

Kristi's Space

I'm 28, DH is 29. We are high school sweethearts who married after dating for 4 years. Like all relationships we have our ups and downs, but we work well together. Smile

We have one DD who is 2 1/2, she'll be 3 in June. She was a surprise baby, but a good surprise Smile I had pre-e with her and was on bedrest for about 10 weeks. At 38 weeks my water broke and I had a fast labor. At 8cm they realized she was breech and I was whisked off to an unwanted c-section. She has food allergies to wheat, dairy, eggs and peanuts, although she has outgrown her allergies/sensitivities to rice, oranges, and raspberries so far, so we are hopeful to one day cross off 1-3 more of those (not sure if I dare to hope she could outgrow all 4!). She has recently been diagnosed with a recurring fever syndrome, which means once a month (approximately 4 weeks apart) she will develop a high fever with sore throat that lasts 3-4 days. She is a high needs kiddo and always has been from day 1, but is so smart and loving. A wonderful, challenging girl!

It took us well over 2 years to decide to have another, and for the first year (ok 2 years) after DD was born, we weren't sure that we were going to have another. However, our family felt incomplete, and we decided to try for one more. I got my BFP in January, after 3 cycles of trying (I have crazy cycles that last anywhere from 18-52 days, and I don't ovulate very often, but have never been diagnosed with anything). I have had 2 ultrasounds so far, one for spotting (it was so early, we didn't really see anything) and then the usual viability ultrasound where we saw a beautiful blob with a beautiful heartbeat. Smile

I am planning a VBAC with a midwife at a hospital an hour away from me (closest that would allow a VBAC) and am looking forward to the breastfeeding experience again. One of the most challening, most rewarding things I have ever done!

My worst fear is developing pre-e again, or being forced into a repeat c-section (unless it is a true emergency).

Hi, I'm Cherry, 30 married to DH for almost 5 years. We started TTC in Feb. 09, but after 3 months we had to put TTC on hold until August of 09 due to some medical issues I was having. Finally got a BFP in Oct. 09, but at my first appointment in Nov. was told I had a blighted ovum. Had the m/c on Dec. 7 of 09 and was not planning to TTC until after one period (however, we did not prevent).

Around March 1, I started noticing some light but unusual indigestion/nausea so I POAS and it was positive. I had never gotten my period after the m/c but I kept track of every time we DTD just in case and figured I was around 4-5 weeks pregnant. I had mild nausea/indigestion for about 2 weeks, then it disappeared. This was exactly what happened with the first pregnancy so I became absolutely convinced I was having a second m/c-I even told my parents I was having another one.

My first doctor's appointment was scheduled for March 24 and I didn't want to go in early unless I started bleeding so I just waited for that date to confirm what I already knew. When I went in, I told the doctor what I thought and she did an ultrasound. To my shock, I was pregnant with a live baby and 10 weeks along instead of the 7 or 8 I thought- apparently I got pregnant at the end of January. When the doctor told me that I had a baby inside and showed me and DH the heartbeat, I was in total shock-it was the most surreal feeling I have ever experienced. I couldn't believe it was really happening. I was so prepared for bad news that I wasn't even able to feel excited until the next day-in my head I was happy, but it didn't feel real to me until it sank in overnight! Now I am so excited, but I am also scared that something will still happen. My next appointment is April 20 at which point I will be in the second trimester so I am anxious for that appointment to come and for everything to be ok so I can feel more confident about the pregnancy.

1st Appointment March 24, 2010. Saw Ob/Gyn and had an u/s done since I thought I was having a m/c. Saw a baby with a heartbeat!!! Yahoo
Ob/Gyn said I was measuring around 10wks, 1day. Gave me a due date of Oct. 22 which doesn't really match 10wks, 1 day, it puts me at 9 wks, 5 days or so, but I don't mind a later due date since I don't want to be induced if I go long. I guess we'll see if they change it on me later.
Based on the only date we DTD that would work for being around 10 weeks on March 24, I would have calculated myself to be at 10 weeks, 2 days, but who knows when I O'd so her evaluation of 10wks, 1 day seems quite accurate. Weight was 166

Unscheduled Visit-April 1, 2010, Had some bright red bleeding so panicked and called my OB. She had me come right in and did a scan. Everything was fine, baby was kicking and swimming around. Bleeding seems to have been a one time thing, really hoping it does not come back-way too scary! I did get an u/s pic out of it-poor quality and bad angle but that's my baby!!!

Measuring 11wks, 1 day Weight was 162, must have been bloated last week.

2nd Appointment: April 22, 2010 - Heard the heartbeat on the doppler! Scheduled the big U/S for June 1 and next appointment for May 20. Now we can share our news w/ family and friends!!!
Weight was 162 1/2

3rd Appointment: May 21, 2010 - Heard the hearbeat again, yay! Next appointment is June 17-I will start seeing the midwife which I am excited about! Weight was 166

Big U/S June 1-It's a girl!!!

4th Appointment June 17-Met with midwife. Heartbeat was 158 and weight was 171.

5th Appointment July 15 - Everything looking and sounding good. Weight at 173. Next appointment is in 3 weeks and then I will start going every 2 weeks. Glucose test next time, yuck!

6th Appointment August 5 (29 weeks)- Did the glucose test, they will call me if I don't pass. Also got a rhogam shot. Gained 3.5 lbs up to 176.5. Heartbeat was 148. I get to wait 3 weeks til my next appointment instead of 2 because I'm not having any issues that need close monitoring. Have another ultrasound on August 25 to look at the kidneys-they were a bit dilated on the 20 week u/s, so hoping this will have resolved.

32 week ultrasound August 25-kidneys are now measuring with the normal range, yay! Also confirmed she still looks like a girl-I was wondering because the kidney thing is a lot more common in boys. And we got to see the baby in 3D-she kept her hands over her face most of the time but we got one shot of it:

7th Appointment Aug. 26- Baby's heartrate was 156, blood pressure good, I passed the glucose test, everything looks good. I can wait 3 weeks again because I'm not having any problems, yay! Weight is now 180 putting me at 18 lbs total for the pregnancy-looks like I'm not going to keep it under 20 which I was hoping, but maybe I won't pass 25 lbs (fingers crossed). That means I probably shouldn't repeat last week's splurge of a gallon of chocolate milk and a box of donuts, the both of which I consumed over way too short a time! Next appointment is Sept. 16, hoping to have my birth plan to discuss w/ my midwife. Also hoping to do the hospital tour on Sept. 20, need to check w/ DH to see if that day works with his schedule.
