The Birth Story
What a journey this pregnancy has been- especially the end! After going into preterm labor at 33 weeks and 2 days, I was put on bed rest until 37 weeks (my previous doctor said 35 weeks would be okay). I was obedient about my bed rest until I reached 35 weeks. I took it easy for that week and by 36 weeks I decided it was time to get the ball rolling and I would live life like I normally would. I started drinking Raspberry Leaf Tea as well. My contractions during week 35 and 36 had slowed to practically nothing- when I had them they were slightly more painful but they weren?t regular or frequent. My 37 weeks appointment was on Tuesday and my cervix was still at 4 cm, 75% effaced, and at station -1. On Thanksgiving Day (November 28th) while making The Big Meal for 15 people I started contracting again- 37 weeks. I made it through the day and contractions still continued through the night on and off. It continued like this through the 30th. I decided it was time to try Evening Primrose Oil. Patrick and I bought some and I took one 1300mg pill. I was contracting pretty frequently. We made sure to do the dirty that night. All night long I had contractions waking me up. They slowed in the early hours and I was able to get some rest. I got out of bed at around 8:00 AM on December 1st took a shower, did the dishes, and made breakfast. I was contracting pretty regularly and they seemed a lot worse on the scale of pain. I took another 1300mg pill of EPO and drank a cup of my RLTea. The contractions continued throughout the day and were more painful that the other contractions I?d had before. I worked on homework and didn?t move around much except for a small walk around the property for about ten minutes.
Patrick came home at about 11 and we decided to DTD again. We ate lunch and I continued my homework- stopping to concentrate on my painful contractions. They continued to get closer together but slowly and still pretty far apart. Patrick went back to work and I continued my homework.
When they reached 6 minutes apart I informed Patrick that I am confused ? I might be in labor but I couldn?t tell for sure. He came back to the house and we decided to go on another walk around the property (this includes going up and down stairs and a big hill). We discussed whether we should go to the hospital or not. Since his coworker is on vacation he is the only one at the property and has to be on site at all times. We didn?t want him to leave the property for another false alarm and so we weren?t sure if we should go to the hospital or not. We decided we would call his mom to take me to the hospital and if he needed to come he would meet me there.
We went into the house and I started to bounce on the exercise ball as he got ready to call his mom. As I bounced, I sneezed and ?peed.? I totally wet my pants and so I went to change my undies and go potty. When wiping I saw a lot of blood on the toilet paper. I told Patrick we needed to go to the hospital that with that much blood I was just more comfortable going (there was also some blood in the toilet). He went to go do the readings for work really quick and I put some clean pants, undies and a pad on. I sneezes again? more ?pee.? I finally had gotten to the point where if I crossed my legs as I sneezed I wasn?t peeing any more so I came to question if my water broke. We got our stuff together and headed to the hospital.
As we entered I keep feeling like I was leaking and decided that my water probably broke. We got up to Labor and Delivery and were put into a room right away at around 3:00 PM. We had a PH swab done on the pad and vaginally and was hooked up to be monitored. Regular contractions. PH swab was inconclusive. The Resident Doctor (Dr. D*) said that based on my story it really sounded like my water broke. He checked my cervix and I was at 6 cm, 90% effaced and at station -1. Dr. D* was also the resident doctor when I went into pre-term labor so it was nice to have a familiar face. Dr. W* (my OB) informed me at my appointment that she would be out of town for the holiday but Dr. H* (my previous OB) would be on call. Dr. H* was on call when I went into pre-term labor as well. When Dr. D* talked to Dr. H*, he was told to do a speculum to make sure that my water broke since I had gone into false labor twice in the last few weeks after going into pre-term. We did a speculum and had some more PH swabs. I had my IV inserted but not hooked up to my antibiotics yet. Yet again it was inconclusive so an AmnioSure was done. If you haven?t had this done they stick a swab up there and let it sit for a minute, then they mix it in a liquid for a minute and then it goes to a lab.
I was then able to get into the hot tub and relaxed in it for a while. Contractions were getting more painful but I wouldn?t say they decreased in time between much. I think we were at about 4 minutes apart for the majority of my hospital time. I was informed that the AmnioSure came back positive and we started and finished my first dose antibiotics for Group Strep B. I started feeling a lot of pressure while in the tub and had to go potty and got extremely hot. As soon as I got out I started shivering like crazy but I wasn?t cold. I couldn?t even feel comfortable enough to go pee so we did a cervical check- 7 cm, 100% effaced and at station -1: PROGRESS! I continued to labor and have intermittent fetal heart rate monitoring. I did some bouncing on the ball and walked around the hallway for a bit. At a shift changed we were informed that he was lower but wasn?t given any other information. I felt the need to poop but was previously told not to go to the restroom to try to poop. I knew it was #2 and not baby and was able to go but man did it hurt and I had to focus really hard. I was later checked by Dr. D* again and was at 7 cm, 100% effaced and at station 0. It was relief to have more progress and know that this for sure was going to happen and I didn?t need Pitocin.
Dr. H* later showed up around 7:15 and did a cervical check. I was at 8 cm and +2. He said that I wasn?t in ?active, active labor.? Contractions were still about 4 minutes apart and I was able to talk and laugh in between. He also told me I have a fore sac- this is when liquid gets in between the layers of the amniotic sac and causes a second sac found beneath the baby?s head. He said that we could pop the sac and it could do 1 of two things; it could put me into hard labor in just a couple contractions or it could do nothing and things would continue as they were going. It was hard for me to decide- all natural or potentially speed things up. I decided to pop the sac as I was already so tired from the amount of contractions I had throughout the day and previous night. The prepped the bed for delivery. I had a contraction and Dr. H* checked me again to get ready to pop the sac. He said I went from an 8 cm to a 9 cm right then. He popped the fore sac and I felt a lot of liquid gush and gush and blood too. The next contraction I had was a lot worse. Dr. H* suggested pushing as I had a contraction and it was much too uncomfortable when I tried. He left the room since it wasn?t quite delivery time.
I had hard labor for about 15 minutes before I felt like pushing is what would feel better. Dr. H* and Dr. D* came in right away and got ready to delivery my baby. Dr. D* was set to be the delivery doctor and positioned himself. My first initial pushes weren?t very well done and I tried to only push when contracting. I did a couple more sets of 3 pushes and baby was moving down nicely. I told Patrick, ?I hate you right now? I know it?s so clich? to say? But I really do?? I hurt? Bad.. And was so exhausted. I felt like I couldn?t do it. I pushed another 3 times and baby?s head was crowing- I saw it sticking out of me. I didn?t have energy or breath to push another time but as I saw his head there I knew he couldn?t breathe and that his scull was being smushed together and he needed me to push one more time. I took a quick big breath in and pushed until all the pressure was released. The doctors actually had to tell me to hold my pushing for a second. I stopped immediately. My Daxton Dash was born at 7:54 PM at 37 weeks and 3 days Gestation Age.
They put him on my belly as he came out. He was covered in vernix and got an Apgar score of 9. He got blankets put on him and was getting dried off. I was able to have skin to skin for about an hour and half and breastfed him for 20 minutes on one breast (left) and about 40 or so on the other. After he was done feeding the baby nurse took him and got his vitals and weight/length. He was 18 inches and 5 pounds 15.8 ounces with a head circumference of 13: my adorable, tiny baby boy. Patrick was then able to hold his sweet baby for a while. We were moved to the recovery floor after a while.
(more to come later)
Updated for Courtney (hereshoping)
I updated Post #1 with the outstanding due dates....
I was scheduled to be induced monday (12/2/13) at 6am. So I got here checked in and settled into my room. They had a hard time finding and keeping Sophie on the monitor. She kept trying to hide from it which she has done alot of during my pregnancy. Finally found her and got a nice reading for awhile they let me off the monitors for awhile so I could move around and everything. They went to put me back on the monitor so they could have it hooked up for when my dr got here. She was alot more difficult to find this time it took 45 minutes to find her and get her on the monitor so it would read. They then tried to get my hep lock in because I wanted an epidural. Because of not eating or drinking anything I was a very hard stick and it hurt alot. It took 3 tries and 2 nurses to get it in. My dr showed up around 8:10 or so and checked me I was still at 3cm dilated, 50% effaced and the only change was she was at -2 station. He put a full dose of the gel on my cervix around 8:30. At first it just like period cramps. After about half hour I felt like I had to pee and my contractions were picking up alot. After about 45 minutes they let me off the monitors to go to the bathroom. I gave my phone to DJ and told him to call my mom since she was at work and told her she needed to come NOW. At 9:15 I told them I wanted an epidural and they were going to check me I was a 7 and had a bunging bag of water, Right after that they called to get him to come give me the epidural. The nurse had this look on her face and my dr checked me. He said I was complete and broke my water. My contractions were horrible at this point. They told me there wouldnt be time to get the epidural or anything that she was coming NOW. Since it was just my dr, my nurse and DJ in the room the nurse pulled the emergency cord and people came running in. I pushed 2 or 3 times and her head was out. He told me to stop pushing because the cord was wrapped around her neck I stopped for a second but it hurt so bad. My dr told me to continue pushing and she was out at 9:28am. They put her on me and let her rest and the cord pulse for awhile. She had an awesome set of lungs on her right away. Her apgars were 8 and 9. She weighed 7lbs 1.1oz and was 20 inches long at birth. He cut the cord and she stayed on me for awhile still. Because of the gel not fully being in for a hour they didnt give me any meds or anything to have me continue to contract. I pushed for less than 5 minutes and total after they started anything was about a hour. She looks alot like her dad but occasionally I do see me or one of my other kids in her. She has been such a good baby. Because of having gestational diabetes they have had to check her sugars since birth before she eats and they have been perfect. She no longer has to be checked and has tolerated it rather well. My other kids came monday night to see us and Sydneys brothers and sister came also at the same time. She handled being manhandled by all the kids very well.
From the time the gel was placed to delivery was 45 minutes. Im the fastest induction my dr and the hospital has had.
