18 week appt. with my midwife (xp)

My midwife came over this morning for my monthly prenatal checkup, and everything is looking good. I got to hear the baby's heartbeat with the fetoscope for the first time (I was never able to pick it up on the fetoscope during my last pregnancy) and it was pretty awesome. It just sounded truer somehow - not amplified or distorted like on the doppler.

The best news is that my blood pressure is looking really good these days. I had posted previously that I was diagnosed with chronic hypertension in 2010 (it's hereditary, and I'm well into my 40s now), and have been on bp meds which was keeping it under control. However, when I found out I was pregnant, my doc had to switch my meds and it seemed like it wasn't nearly as effective - my bp was still hovering around 140/70. It's been probably the biggest concern for both me and my midwife. She had me start taking this supplement, Hemoxide, a few weeks back, and my bp is now consistently around 125/60 - woot!! She actually wants me to think about trying to forego my bp meds and see how my bp does just with the Hemoxide. We shall see.

Anyway, I'm feeling really good - morning sickness has been gone for weeks, feeling squirms and wiggles, and beyond the usual tiredness, just feeling really good. I have my 20-week ultrasound scheduled for Jan. 31.

So happy that everything is going great! Are you going to find out the gender at your 20 week scan?

Sounds like a great appointment! That is wonderful that your bp is remaining in a good range...hope it continues to stay that way. Can't wait to hear what you are having!

Sounds like a great apt! So glad that supplement is helping with the bp! Question about MW....after you have baby....do Midwives discharge you from their care after the postpartum phase is over (a year later) or can a midwife offer GYN service as well? Just wondering....Ive always gone to OB's due to my complicated history...I doubt a mw would even take me as a client....but I was just wondering? Can not wait to hear what you are having...based on 1st us they thought girl...right? What is your hunch?

We have too--I was SOO tempted and even tried to convince dh to have a surprise with #3--since we had a boy and a girl and everything for each that we saved, I thought it would be fun. But when he said "sure YOU can have a surprise...I won't tell you" and wouldn't go with it, I caved Wink This time, I knew we needed to prepare dd in case she didn't get her sister--and its good we did. She is looking forward to a brother and it won't be tears and disappointments on delivery day! Can't wait to find out which way your tie will go!

My midwives offer GYN care. My experience (limited though it may be) is that I'd rather go to a midwife for an annual checkup than an OB/GYN. I feel like they take more time with me, listen to my opinions, answer my questions, and they're more gentle and take their time with examinations.

My u/s a few weeks ago, though early, gave all indications of a girl, so I've already started thinking of the babe as a girl. We'll see.

My mw does offer GYN services. She came to my house to do my well woman exam a couple years ago. I did end up going back to my old GYN last year because I was having some issues, but for uncomplicated cases, yes, a lot of MWs do offer GYN services.

It does seem so much more personal with midwives...sometimes you feel like a number in doctor's offices!! I hate that!

Glad you had a great appointment! It is funny you said that your bp is good, because every time I have been pregnant, it seems my bp is at its best. My ob/gyn said during my last pg that I have better bp when I am pregnant than when i am not!!

It will be exciting to find out the gender!!!! From the last pic of the U/S I think you are right- girl!!! I keep thinking that if I was pg again I would keep it a surprise as either gender would be a tie breaker, but I know better than that- I would have to know!
