My DH works from 8pm to 8 am and he is used to being awake at night. I try to nap while he drives. We definitely are drowsy the first day, but not too bad. The kids are usually calm being in a new environment and all, that first day. The first night on vacation is a good night of sleep! Then we are ready to go!

We have lots of mountains here – well a couple hours away – but we’ve only gone once! They are REAL mountains, though, and I don’t think Ivy could make it… I wish we had some good short hikes. Maybe we could do that? It inspires me!

And I love the scenery too!

Did you see any snakes or turtles while canoeing? I spent a little while in Kentucky doing some research and it was really nice. We saw tons of different kinds of snakes while we were canoeing. It was so neat.

How do you guys deal with the long drives? How long do you go at a time? How often do you have to stop? How long can you drive at a time, and do you have to stop at hotels?

I’m curious. Some friends of ours have 5 kids and 2-3 times each year they drive 17 hours straight from Winnipeg to Edmonton (and back). We can hardly make it the 3.5 hours to the fair grounds without losing it. How do you do it?
Wow! That's where I live and we have driven to Edmonton a few times and let me tell you driving there with 4 kids we need to stop in Saskatoon over night!!!!

You do have the beautiful Rockies so close! We love doing the Calgary - banff - jasper- Edmonton run and try to do it every year. It's so sad to see those mountains become smaller in the rear view mirror when we are driving back!
