Default I really like this idea!

A packing list for kids! Get them to be responsible for themselves! Add the quantities for each item. Kept in a plastic sleeve, they can check things off for the return trip as well.

    Very nice

I have a spreadsheet that we go down the list to pack. I tell them what to get, the kids get it, bring it to me and I approve the stack then it goes into their bag. I tried just giving them the list... but somehow they all ended up with clothes that didn't match and it drove me crazy the whole trip, lol. Now they still pack their own clothes, but I can veto things (like the favorite holey shirts...) before it's packed. Even Evan brings me his clothes to pack. Best of both worlds

I have had my kids pack their own clothes for our short weekends to Idaho, but always have to give it the once over for the reasons Nancy stated. Once dd brought some pretty strange things, thought a pair of shorts was pants (it was January in Idaho), and I cannot recall what else. DS packed like 7 shirts and one pair of pants. So the last trip they packed but I checked it... good thing too. lol

My older boys pack their clothes but I'm amazed at how often I have to ask where one item is or more of something...son, we're gone for a week, you'll need more than 1 pair of socks!

Younger children, good in theory but may just cause more work for me as I can see it getting unfolded or being stuffed in a suitcase. But I guess thats just me.

The chart shown has a spot for quantities of the items to be packed...so you'd end up with more than a single pair of socks etc.

Personally, I preferred that the kids learn to help and did not worry much about how well folded things were. Maybe that's because we camped a lot. Showing them how to fold things can be part of the lesson though.

My favourite was "I did get seven socks. I couldn't find any pairs!"??!!!!!

Umm... so seven individual socks is the answer? At least it was more than 2!
