Big Ag lobby blocks public health safety steps.

By Nicholas Kristof: Every year in the US 325,000 people are hospitalized because of food-borne illnesses and 5,000 die (almost twice 9/11). Antibiotics are recklessly stuffed into healthy animals to make them grow faster. This cavalier use of low-level antibiotics creates a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

We would never think of trying to keep our children healthy by adding antibiotics to school water fountains, because we know this would breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It’s unconscionable that Big Ag does something similar for livestock. Vegetarians may think that they’re immune; they’re not. I know. Scary, isn't it? MRSA pneumonia is what I had. There are only a couple of antibiotics that work on it, and even they aren't foolproof. I could easily have died. The way most livestock is raised in the US is pretty scary. The reason they need the antibiotics is because they have thousands of animals living in closed quarters without adequate sanitation. Then there's the hormones they add to make them produce more milk, meat, etc., in a shorter period of time.

It's so gross. This is another reason to become self sufficient. I would love to have a cow butchered every year from a local, organic farm but I don't have a freezer. I could raise my own but I would name her Bessy and knit things for her because she was so darn cute. Lol. When my nephew was six and had BO, pit hair, was nearly as tall as me and was sprouting a 'stache, his doctor told them it was all that nasty milk back when everyone was using the growth hormones still and to buy organic. They did and he didn't really hit puberty until he was supposed to. That was proof enough for me! He's 15 today and he's about 6'2". I wonder if that's from the hormones or if he comes by it honestly. Ok, I went a little off topic there. It's too early for my brain. Lol

Scary stuff! There is a great email group I belong to that often has local raised farm beef that you can buy the whole cow, OR you can go half or quarter with other families on the email list and split it up. Its pretty nice--I have some good organic hormone free beef in the freezer from the last fall butcher.

Not only is it disgusting it's disturbing to think about where most of our food comes from. This is a major reason we are doing what we can to be as self sufficent as possible. I like to know where my food comes from - vegetable AND animal.

We do this as well, although we didn't this year & I'm regretting it.

just lurking todays posts.
I am not in North America and where I live they don't allow many imports from USA because of the way things are handled there. Our stuff even non organic is generally healthier/less treatetd than in USA. But recently we had the EHEC/e.coli outbreak due to some organic sprouts, so even organic isn't completely safe either. Even with washing and peeling (with the affected cucumbers in was inside) they weren't safe to eat. Some people are just carriers and some were seriously affected (kidney failure or death).
There is a lot more to it than that, but thinking about it and antibiotics and the treatment of food in general really made me think about how scary things have gotten.

The problem is it's starting to become a global issue & that's scary - Europe has had problems with diseased animals & outbreaks as well & food comes from all over the place, so even with not allowing from certain countries outbreaks like this most recent one are still happening. Until consumers (globally) start demanding a change we aren't going to see any positive shift in the safety of our food.

Yikes! That is why I really think that the food you put in your body (and your family's bodies) should be of the utmost importance. There are so many things to think about and worry about, but this one tops the list for me.
