Having bad contractions...

They started about an hr ago and they hurt really bad! But they don't seem to be in a pattern. It almost feels like extremely bad period cramps that don't stop. Sometimes I even have pain in my back, but not all the time. If it gets horrible then I'll go to the hospital, but for now I'm just laying on the couch. I feel like this is super early if its the real thing. Well...tomorrow afternoon I have a dr. Appt. and I'm supposed to get "checked". Hopefully it will subside and I can just tell dr. about it then. Who knows?? I'm starting to freak a little though! Never had this with my first 2 pregnancies...had to be induced. Any thoughts?

I hope you don't mind me piggy-backing off this question, but I got on to post the SAME question. My lower back has been hurting today, then about an hour ago I started getting period like cramps that are constant (definitely not come and go like contractions would be). I took Tylenol and am now sitting down. Hopefully it'll help. I wonder what it could be? Dehydration?

I too have a doctors appointment in the morning, so I don't want to call just to go in in the morning! Hopefully it will subside. Can't wait to hear the answers!

If you're not sure, you should try to lay on your left side, drink some water, and if you're still in pain and concerned call your OB and see what their opinion is. It could be signs of labor. Also, if it's not real labor the cramping usually will go away just by changing position and walking, whereas with real labor the contractions/cramps will begin to get a little stronger (or so I've read).

I do get the lower back pain off and on and period like cramps often. I was told by my OB to make sure I watched the signs and if I had more then 4-6 of the cramps/contractions within an hour to go to L&D. However, I know my body better than anyone, and I have had more than that within an hour, but they weren't getting stronger. In fact they'd start out really strong as to where I'd sort of double over and then they'd slow. The only time I was ever really concerned was when I was 20 weeks and went to the ER because I was literally crying about the pain and couldn't move my legs (the drs never did find out what caused that).

Anyway, if you're still unsure, you can time them to see how close together they are, how long they last, and if they're getting stronger.

IMO you know you're body better than anyone else. If you feel there is cause for concern, you should call your OB just to see what they say.

With my first I asked my mom (lol) because I was only 18 and didn't know what contractions felt like! Ha ha. With my 2nd I was leaking fluid and had lost about 1/2 of the amniotic fluid so they induced me and had very mild contractions up until that time. Just my experiences and two cents!

KUP on how you both are doing and good luck!!

I had this same thing last week and actually, what made them stop was standing up. They were off and on for about 2 hours and finally I got up to get some water and that's when they stopped. Hoping they've stopped for you by the time you read this!

i've been having them, too, off and on for the last 3 days. saturday night i was up from 3-5am, and had 8 during that 2 hours, but the timing was sporadic. they'd be 10 min. apart and then the next one would come after 6 min. and then the next one wouldn't come for 14 min., etc. and the intensity varied...some were really painful and others were more mild. with real labor, the timing is consistent and gradually they get closer and closer together, and the intensity is more consistent and they gradually get more and more intense. so i wasn't surprised when they eventually fizzled out and i was able to go back to bed. these type of "practice contractions" can still be dilating and effacing your cervix in preparation for the big day, but it just isn't active labor yet. try googling "prodromal labor"....that describes what i think i'm experiencing. but this can progress into active labor if the contractions start to settle into a pattern and never let up! how are you ladies feeling now???

update: Well....they lasted till about 9 last night and then tapered off, but dr. checked me today and I'm 3 cms. :). Soooo...it's basically just a matter of time I guess. Dr. Said if I make it to next week and I'm dialated more we could talk about possible induction. But she said anything could happen at this point, and to go to the hospital if I get bad contracts that are decently timed. So we'll see!!
