So itchy! - UPDATED

I can't remember being this itchy before with my other kids but I feel like I could scratch my skin off at this point. What are you guys using to prevent/help with itchiness? It's not just my belly either. It's everywhere and I'm going to lose my mind soon, LOL.

I've been using cocoa butter and put it on after every shower. Seems to keep my skin hydrated all day long and keeps the itching away.

lurker** If you are itching all over and there is no rash with the itchiness and its as bad as it sounds like it is for you...you might want to call your doctor and be seen. There is a condition when your gallbladder stops functioning properly. Bile acids back up in your liver and then spill into your blood stream. It causes severe itching all over and will often start on the palms of your hands and bottoms of your feet. usually this is the only symptom but it can also cause dark urine, right sided (I think) belly pain, lethargy, nausea and vomitting and jaundice in mom. The condition is called pregnancy induced Cholestasis (sp might not be correct). The doctors can diagnose it with a simple blood test. They look for a few things, but one thing I remember specific to when I had it was that my liver enzymes were very high. This is an important condition to have diagnosed (but it is rare so hopefully you do NOT have it) because although its very awful for mom as far as comfort....its very dangerous for baby. If you DO have it your doc will probably start monitoring your baby very closely with ultrasound and/or NST...they may start a medication to try to control the bile build up...and they will usually induce labor early to get baby out safely as it can cause stillbirth. I am not trying to scare you...but I have had it for definitely 2 of my pregnancies, and although it was not diagnosed I strongly suspect a third as well...and with my daughter Ella (2 babies ago) when I had it it was from a tip on this board that got me to call my doctor to be sure everything was fine. My doctor said it was very rare and he doubted I had it...and then sure enough not only did I have it..but I had it BAD!! They got my baby out totally safely at just under 37 weeks to be sure she stayed fine...and she is a perfectly healthy little girl. I also got it with my last pregnancy...but it started at 38 weeks...they induced me as soon as it started....just to be on the safe side. My son is fine too! Smile THey are watching me closely for the condition again...because there is a high chance of getting once you have already had it. Good luck! Hopefully its just annoying pregnancy itching and nothing more!!!

Thank you! I actually saw my doctor this morning and that's exactly what he did, wrote me a lab prescription for a bile acids test. Gosh, I sure hope that's not what's going on. It sounds so scary! I'm glad you and your kids were safe. I go in tomorrow morning so hoping it's like you said and is nothing more than annoying itching.

Thanks for checking! I'm still waiting on the results. I'm expecting them back today but everything I see online says it takes about 5 days to get the results back. I work in a lab, though, and I know it doesn't take that long so I'm hoping it actually does come back today. I hate waiting, LOL.

Thanks! No results yet. It must be one of those that are only run on certain days now. Grrrr. Hopefully in the morning.

Okay, the good news is that I don't have cholestasis. But the bad news is that I'm going to be itching for the next 4 weeks or so. So back to the initial question, does anyone have a good product they recommend for itchy skin? The doctor told me to take Benedryl but I have been and it doesn't do anything. Sad

How about an oatmeal bath or something like that? I'm so glad that it's not cholestasis, hope you can find some relief!

toward the beginning of my pregnancy, a friend gave me "mother's special blend toning oil." i don't know if it would relieve your itching....i'm sure you've tried all kinds of lotions and what-not. but i LOVE it. my belly itches due to the skin stretching, but if i rub this stuff on when i get out of the shower i get relief from the itching for most of the day.

Thanks, everyone! And I'm going to see if I can find that, Amanda. Yeah, I just got out of the shower, put lotion (a body butter this time) all over and I'm still itching like crazy. Ack!!
