Ugh...still sick

Geesh, I have been feeling awful for the last week. It started after my flu shot with a bad headache and sore throat and has now turned into a coughing attack. I literally can not stop coughing...my ribs and tummy muscles are soooo sore. And it seems that my cough gets terrible every time I try to sleep, so I'm exhausted too. I think I'm gonna call the dr tomorrow to see if there's anything I can take to help with the cough. Anybody have any recommendations on anything that might help?

I've had a nasty cough for a month. I went to the insticare on day 5 or so of the cough and the dr said it was a virus and it'd run it's course. I asked my OB at my last appointment and he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic. He said the risk of coughing THAT much is to have your water break. It's ok to have your water break at week 36, but at week 20 ... game over. After one night of the antibiotic ... cough practically gone. I'm SOOOO glad I talked to him!!!

that sounds miserable! i hope your doctor can recommend or prescribe something that helps. i had a really bad cold (sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, up all night coughing) during the 1st trimester, and asked the pharmacist at the drug store what over-the-counter pill i could take while pregnant. he sternly said "nothing except a little tylenol!" according to him, none of the cold/flu symptom relief stuff is approved for pregnant women. Sad you could try licorice root tea...it's supposed to be a natural cough suppressant and i even give it to DS1 when he's coughing since he's too young to take cough medicine (it tastes sweet so he will drink it). honey is also supposed to be a natural cough suppressant, so stir some of that into the tea, too, and you might be able to fall asleep better. plus tylenol for the sore throat. hope you feel better soon!

I just got a raging sore throat last night and a congested chest. I hate the feeling of not getting good breaths with all the congestion - makes my anxiety level sky rocket!

Being sick while pregnant is the worst! I keep getting little annoying colds that last for weeks on end...so annoying! The joys of being pregnant this time of year.

I had never heard of coughing so much you broke your water. That is very scary! I hope you get something to help you Erin.

I second the tea with honey...or you could make a hot lemonade sweetened with honey if tea isn't your thing. Lemon helps with the decongestant part too if you are struggling with that. I hope you get feeling better soon!

I had a bad cold this fall that lasted for like six weeks. Tea with honey is your only friend! You can also try Vick's Vapo-Rub and/or a humidifier to help you sleep.

As far as actually getting better, like I said, I was sick for a REALLY long time. I finally started taking 1000 mg of vitamin C every day, and I've finally kicked the cold. It started getting better within two days of going on the vitamin C. My midwife said it is fine to take.

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions. I talked to the dr today and she basically said I just have to ride it out as long as I don't have a fever, which I don't. She said I can take robitussin for the cough, which I just might do because I'm desperate to get control of this cough so I can sleep. I hate taking any medicine when I'm pregnant, so I'm hoping to just have to take a dose at night and get over this stupid cold quickly.

If I may make a suggestion, fall allergies may be to blame. I have allergies bad and the mucus causes yucky coughing fits after I have layed down and often causes my nose to block and to feel miserable in general. The sinus preasure alone can cause headaches. My OB prescribed a non drowsy allergy med. and it cleared right up in about two days. The fact that it started right after your flu shot may be just a coinsidence.

Make sure it's the DM stuff. It's the only kind that is safe while pregnant.

I ended up with bronchitis a few months ago from a cold, I know that around here that thing was every where, so don't go too long as it really could end up causing bronchitis. It also set of my asthma, I have a very VERY mild case of asthma, and had to get a stupid inhaler to get the cough to stop but honestly I'm so glad I did. Actually seeing a doctor is the best way too go. Especially if the cough doesn't improve after a week. You shouldn't have a bad cough persist for longer than a week.

Oh yes! I forgot to say, I also got an albuterol inhaler prescription from my doctor. I haven't had to use an inhaler since I was like 12 years old. But it helped SO MUCH, especially at bedtime. It would loosen everything up, I would cough for like 2 minutes to clear my lungs, and then I'd be all set for most of the night. It was a godsend for me.
