UTI :(

i've only had one uti in my life, and it was during my first pregnancy. now, i've got one again. apparently they are more common during pregnancy. i was up all night feeling like i had to pee every 10-15 min, but of course only a trickle would come out, and it was painful! i've been having a lot of cramping, too, really low in my abdomen.

so now i'm just waiting for the OB to call me back and hopefully agree to call in a prescription for me without me having to go to an urgent care center or something. it's a sunday, so i hate bothering the doc-on-call but DH said if it i let it go untreated til regular business hours tomorrow it could spread to my kidneys and cause more problems. what a pain!!

Did you try anything over the counter? I've used something that will dye your urine orange, but it helps. AZO. I think. It only helps the symptoms, but doesn't cure, so of course you would need both.

Hopefully your ob or PCP can just call in an Rx to the pharmacy.

This is my third UTI and my third pg. I have never had any symptoms though so the only way I know is through my urine tests at the drs. My main complaint is the antibiotics gave me a yeast infection this last time and it sucked. I didn't realize what it was until it went away but BLAH it sucked.

Ugh...not fun! I have only had 2 UTIs in my life and they were during each of my previous pregnancies too. I was actually completely prepared to have had one with this pregnancy too, but so far so good. Hopefully your OB calls back soon and gets you a prescription.

it took a few hours, but i did eventually hear back from her and just got my antibiotics from the pharmacy. i really hope they are effective soon! i remember feeling much better within 24hrs of starting meds last time, so we'll see. right now, this whole day has felt like torture! i'm on the potty every 10 min and there's definitely a good amount of blood in my urine (it's pink). ow, ow, ow! sometimes, being pregnant just sucks.

is there anything that helps prevent this? i've heard drinking cranberry juice? and i guess i should be eating yogurt, 'cause yeah, i remember getting a yeast infection from the antibiotics last time.

I had a silent UTI with this pregnancy that turned into a kidney infection and I ended up in the hospital for 24 hours. NOT fun!!! Drinking cranberry juice helps, I usually get rid of mine on my own with that but you need to make sure it's the 100% or else it's pointless, I hate straight cranberry juice so I get the mixed ones but I always make sure it's the 100% juice ones. Langers is my Favorite brand! Also hit the water good and hard to help your body clean it's self out. Yogurt is good as well, get some probiotics, acidophilus is what I use. My midwife also had me get some Grapefruit seed extract pills to take if I get another UTI. It's a natural antibiotic. If you use the grapefruit seed pills you take 1, 3 times a day for 3 days then one a day for 4 days. Make sure it isn't mixed with other herbs in the pill.

Sorry about the novel. It seems I've turned into a frequenter with these things lately so I've learned a little bit of what helps. Cranberry juice and probiotics will be your preventives for the next ones. Smile

Cranberry juice and LOTS of it. I have been prone to UTI, Kidney stones and Kidney infections most of my twenties. Lots and LOTS of Cranberry juice, and a lot of Vitamin C.

thanks for the all the tips and sympathy, ladies! i am feeling so much better today now that i've been on the antibiotics for 24 hours. it still hurts to pee...i can tell i'm still inflamed down there, but at least i'm only peeing once an hour instead of every 10 min! and i just generally feel better, compared to yesterday when i was cramping and shaky and nauseated. i was getting really scared it was turning into a kidney infection, but i think we've caught it in time. i drank 64 oz of water yesterday afternoon/evening, and that made a big difference! at least i had a chance to practice my pain-reducing labor breathing techniques while sitting on the potty all day. totally different sensation than labor, but still, it helped. Glad you are feeling better! Sounds like you were super close to a full blown kidney infection because that's how I was feeling just before I went into the hospital. Keep an eye on your lower back in the kidney region. If you start feeling pain there DON'T wait because the antibiotic might not being cutting it for you and it has turned into a kidney infection. I ignored my back pain for far too long and paid for it. I don't want you to go threw that misery. Sometimes the water can mask your UTI symptoms too, but I'm sure you probably caught it soon enough that the antibiotics should finish kicking it.

Oh get some probiotics to take for after you finish your antibiotics. Don't take them together or they cancel each other out. The probiotcs will build your good bacteria back up fast so you can prevent another UTI and also yeast infections. They also build your immune system up so you will be less likely to get sick other ways too. Smile Great stuff I tell you. Oh OH and they help regulate your bowels. So they can make you less constipated. Smile I love probiotics, if you can't tell.

Good luck and hope you continue to feel better and get over this nasty UTI. They are miserable. Worse than labor IMO.
