Bruising - opinions please

So Mason bruises pretty easily. He had a bruise from his flu shot for a week. He got bruises on his thighs from "sliding" down the ladder at the ped's office (they have a bunk bed style ladder for the kids to climb up on the exam tables).

He almost always has small bruises up and down his back.

The other thing is his poop. I know, by 16 months you'd think the poop questions would be all answered by now. He goes from constipation to diarrhea almost every day. My older son has this issue too.

The ped says it's not celiacs since both kids are thriving. But I dunno. My 1st cousin has celiac's so it's genetically possible.

Any thoughts? I've always really trusted my ped but I must tell you that I'm starting to doubt her a bit.

I guess what I'm asking is should I insist on a CBC or some other test, or am I just being paranoid?

Do people with celiac's have higher incidence of bruising?

Yes, they often do when they are not on a gluten free diet.

I think that your mommy instincts are often right-on. I think you should ask. They did a CBC test at Eve's 12 month exam. Did they not do one for Mason then? Or do you think this has developed since his 12 month exam?

I'd trust your instinct and get a second opinion. There's no downside to doing so, you know? Especially since missing a diagnosis could be bad for little Mason's tummy.

I've learned quite a few times this past year to always go with your Mommy gut!! Even if it turns out to be nothing, there's no harm in getting it checked out. That way you won't be wondering "what if" either. Good luck, keep us posted!

I forgot to ask- has his walking improved since getting his tubes? How's his hearing doing now?

The poop thing would concern me a lot... by now it seems his system should be more regular. I would also follow your gut and get it checked out!

Thanks ladies, I think so too. I think if things haven't improved in the next 4 weeks when he goes for his 18 month check up I'll insist that we explore further.

Tonya - yes, after his tubes within 3 days he was walking so much better. It was night and day. I feel that the tubes have helped tremedously. He's not a big talker but his vocabulary has improved and his babbling sounds are much clearer too. Funny how such a little thing can be such a huge help!

What about his iron levels??? because too much iron can cause severe constipation and then too little could cause the diarrhea and also the bruising... and it seems his diarrhea is more often by your posts so maybe he is low for the most part. I have low iron which is always a problem especially with my stools and I know right away how to fix it usually when it happens just by changign the diet or adding/removing iron

I agree, get a second opinion...hope its not celiac! My BFFs 4 yr old son has this (diagnosed beginning of this year) and he was thriving, it was the messy poop issue (but he'd go heaps during the day and it was always runny, not sure if he had the opposite too). He had to have a scope done too to see how much damage had been done to his intestines. Anyway, KUP...also great his walking and talking has improved, keep it up Mason!

I would get his blood platelets tested asap. I had low platelets from age 11-18 and I had to be very careful not to bang my head or my stomach. Nothing to be terribly worried about just something that needs checking. I would bruise SO easily and also would get red little spots(broken blood vessels) if I scratched somewhere like my arms or chest.

Hope the bruising stops soon!

I say go with your gut. It could be nothing but why not have him tested esp since it runs in your family? If nothing else, it will put your mind at ease!
