Melissa, woohoo for 120! Wow, I haven't seen that number on the scale since before I became pregnant with DS#1.
Have you tried any nail treatments to harden your nails? There are natural stregtheners out there, like Barielle Nail Strengthener Cream, that I have heard good things about. Sally Hansen Hard as Nails polishes (they also make clear) are Big 3 free (doesn't contain formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP), if you want to paint them. I hope you find something that helps you.
Yeah, the negative comments just perpetuate all the myths that are out there. The article itself even made a point to say that she got permission from her doctor before she did it, and she has been running for a really long time. If her medical professionals said she was good to go, then people just need to butt out. Internet trolls think they know everything though.
We make stew in our crock pot. We cube about 2 lbs of beef and brown it on the stovetop (everyone says to dip it in flour before you brown it, but we skip that) and put it in the pot along with a packet of onion gravy mix and a couple cups of water. We then chop up 8 or so carrots, 3 or 4 ribs of celery, and 5 - 8 potatoes and throw them in there, add more water to cover, and then add salt, pepper (and cayenne for a bit of heat if you want), a couple of bay leaves, and whatever herbs we feel like that day (a bit of basil and/or a sprig of thyme are our faves). Let cook on low all day or on high for 4 hours. Sorry it's not exact, we just throw stuff in and taste it a couple hours in and adjust accordingly. That feeds all 5 of us that day plus gives DH and me lunches during the week.
I've just discovered a few crock pot groups on FB. I haven't been able to make any recipes, but they have tons of ideas, from main courses, to party entrees, to desserts you can make in your crock.https://www.facebook.com/crockpotgirlhttps://www.facebook.com/Crockpotgirls
and a blog http://www.skinnycrockpot.com/
I hope you find lots of ideas
I'm not feeling motivated to go running today. My toe is still a bit out of sorts. I have been going to the gym and just getting on a cycle this week. I don't even feel like doing that today. Zumba on Sunday for sure though.
Christina- you know what the funny thing is.... 3 years from now, you'll be 41 whether or not you're finishing your MBA... so might as well go for it, hey?
Mel, I hope you and your DH are feeling better! Oh, and I would have had just that salad for dinner! YUM! The book club I went to in Angola was a secret wine and food club too. And yay for 120.... I weighed that in middle school.... and have no illusions of ever seeing such a number again!
Suzanne, so glad you liked Zumba! Woohoo!!! I love finding a new workout that I like!
Steph, I'm jealous of your yoga studio across the street!
Well, as for me... I've been on vacation this last week... for sure, something about the food up there did NOT agree with me. I had stomach aches and loose stools ALL WEEK. I took lots of naps and stuff and just spent time lying in bed reading because I just didn't feel good. I just couldn't find normal options of food to eat that would make me feel good- but of course, I'm at that point where I have to eat or I get to feeling nauseous. Blah. So food wise, it was a bad week- mostly because I had very little control over what I was eating, options were super limited, etc. But the good news is, most days we went for long leisurely strolls around town- long enough that I felt tired in my legs when we got back. So, not exactly a cardio workout, but at least I was moving!
Also, good news is that I found my HRM strap the day I was packing! For some reason it was in a suitcase with a couple other random bits that belong to my husband. Very weird. But now when I go for walks I can wear it and see if I'm moving fast enough to get a gentle cardio workout in. I have no illusions of being the woman who runs a marathon on the day I deliver. I just want to be active and feel good during my pregnancy, but I have no need to push myself that hard.
Well, yes, I think that you trying to run a marathon while pregnant would be very dangerous ~ but to someone used to pushing themselves hard or who is used to training/running all the time it is a totally different story. I think that for people that are used to working out it can be more difficult and harder on their body to NOT work out than to continue to work out. I got weird looks in boxing at 37 weeks or regular yoga classes at 39 weeks and just laughed ~ I can't stand the attitude that some strangers give that pregnancy is a disability. I was healthy, pregnant, and not some delicate little flower! That stinks about the lousy food options, were you nauseous like that with Beni? Based on your late BFP I'm totally betting girl for you, by the way ~ I think that it was one of those slow moving girl sperm that did the trick for you guys:)
It is BEAUTIFUL here. Had a great workout this AM, bodypump and 45 minutes of stairs, then abs. DH gets home from school this afternoon, we are heading out on a date with a few other couples ~ I can't wait, feel like it's been a while since we have been out to eat sans kids. Playing golf together tomorrow.
I have some medical tests this week that I am very anxious about ~ so if anyone has any good juju to send my way would appreciate it!
Christina, thank you for the stew recipe, sounds delicious. I'm a wing it sort of cooker like you, so your directions work perfectly!
Melissa, glad you like my directions I'm thinking good thoughts for you, that your tests come out ok.
Mara, it sucks not having the freedom to choose your food, especially while pregnant! I'm glad you're home now and can prepare whatever you want (stove and grocery store willing that is). It's great that you got some walking in too.
Zumba totally kicked my butt yesterday. We did a Britney Spears number that required lots of squats and even pushups. My thighs felt like they were going to fall off! I'm thinking of expanding and doing Zumba on Thursdays too (they have it right after work, at 5:15).
Good for you Suzanne!!!
I need need need to go for a walk!!!
I'm outta here to the grocery store and then Mason and I are going for a walk come he!! or high water!!!
I hope your walk went well, Christina. I was a bad girl and had some Chinese buffet today. I think I ate my weight in rice noodles. Ugh, I'm feeling heavy and blah, but no one forced me to get seconds, so it's all on me. Maybe DS1 won't have too much homework, and we'll be able to go for a walk this evening.
Well poop. I just called earlier to get my blood work results from the clinic. Everything pretty much looks good- certainly everything pregnancy related is fine. The only thing the doc mentioned is that my triglycerides (FAT IN MY BLOOD) are borderline high. I feel sick to my stomach. It's the first time in my life that I have ever had something like blood work come back unhealthy. I mean, ok, I've gone through phases of my weight going up and down, and I've partaken in unhealthy habits (I used to smoke a pack a day, and I certainly used to drink quite often)...but I've never seen any of my choices actually show up with a result in a test. So this is new for me, and it's a wake up call. I need to reduce my fat intake, and I need to keep moving/lose weight. Obviously I can't really actively try to lose weight now, but, after this baby is born, I obviously can't f^ck around like I did after Beni....I need to get serious about losing the baby weight and not gaining extra AFTER the baby is born!
One little thing I'm going to try to do is make fruit a snack instead of other sweets and crap. From what I understand some more fruit should be coming into season fairly soon, so, there may be more to choose from again- not that there isn't a lot now. But more variety is always good. I've also gotten into the bad (but delicious) habit of cooking with more butter than necessary. I'll have to go back to more olive oil and just less in all cases.
How is everyone else doing???
Mel, how are you? Saw on the debate board that it not cancer, which of course is very good. Hope you're feeling rested after a day in bed yesterday!
Suzanne, go to the Thursday Zumba! I find anything I can do straight after work is a great thing, because you just DO IT, and then get on with whatever you have to after.
Christina, how you going????
Steph, I don't even have to ask, I know you're good. What kind of a$$ kicking are you doing today?? Oh wait....actually, now that I read that, I recall reading on facebook that you're sick. Are you feeling better???
I'm not sure what you saw on the debate board, but I don't get any pathology back until early next week.
Can I ask a weird favor? Can you please not call me Mel? Melissa, Melis, Potter, Hey you jerkface, whatever....just not Mel. I loathe the nickname. THanks. I know its silly:)
Sorry about the fat (is that the same thing as high cholesterol or something different?). Not cooking with butter would make a huge difference! What pregnancy related tests did they do that looked good? Betas or something? Or are their other pregnancy type tests they do with blood work over there?
I have to rest again today, I'm going to do some clothes shopping for the older kids while they are at school, and maybe go to the gym this afternoon to meet up with some friends in the cafe to drink coffee and catch up. This resting stuff is pretty nice, though I could never stand more than a few days of it. Luckily I can work out again tomorrow, so there is an end in sight.
I've been soaking the crap out of my toe and I think that it is starting to get better. I need it to, this race is really soon and I am way under where I should be mileage wise.
Steph, how goes the black lung?? I hope you are feeling better ASAP.
Suzanne, I'd totally add another zumba class ~ go for it!
Oh....I must have really misunderstood something I read on your hot seat thread..... sorry. (Ah, I just went back and you said it looks like it's likely not...I guess I focused on that!) Yeah, no problem, about not calling you Mel. I didn't know, but now I do, and I won't do it again! I don't think it's silly- people should be able to be called a name they like!
Triglycerides are not the same as cholesterol, I asked the same thing. I guess it's really just fat. Funny thing was when I asked for a few more details- like where I would be getting too much from, the first thing the doc said was red meat. I laughed and said I'm a vegetarian! Then he even made the silly question, "Well, where do you get fat from?" I've been eating more dairy than almost ever since we moved here- lots of cheese and drinking milk in my coffee....and yeah, butter. I won't use margarine, so I just need to cut down on the butter!
Oh, and the rest of the tests were just like making sure I didn't have any STDs, or other communicable diseases, and the toxoplasmosis test and stuff. I guess maybe they are not really pregnancy related, but, just making sure I'm in a good place starting pregnancy. I had the same blood tests in South Africa at my first appt, so, I would think they are pretty standard. As I've never been in the States in early pregnancy.... do they not do a major blood draw in early pregnancy in the States?
My BIL just had surgery on an ingrown toenail a couple weeks ago. He injured his toenail playing footie, and ignored it (self treated) for a long time, but ended up basically almost not being able to walk. So he had to have it cut out. Hope yours doesn't go the same route!
Mara, yikes about your triglycerides I hope you're able to get your numbers lower soon. We have a huge blood draw over here in Alabama (they take like 3 or 4 vials of the stuff), so your overseas blood work doesn't sound foreign to me. I hate that they do the same STD testing over and over again for subsequent pregnancies, even after they're told I have the same partner and all that stuff.
Melissa, I'm the same way with Suzy. Ack, I completely hate that name. I'm going to have to go spy on your hotseat. I'm still thinking good thoughts that everything turns out to be ok.
Oh, a CBC, yes, I think that I had those each go round ~ I thought that you meant specifically pregnancy related like HCG testing or some sort of quad screen or something when you said things were good pregnancy wise Gotcha.
Ick on your BIL! I would sooner die than not be able to walk or run, so I'm staying well on top of it.
Just use olive oil for everything ~ I bet it makes a drastic difference!
Hey girls! Sounds like everyone is doing well. I still got the black lung but I'm at work today. I feel like laying down under my desk and sleeping. I'm going to attempt to go to Crossfit today. I already warned my trainer that I'm not 100% and might die halfway through the workout. He laughed I'm pretty sure I have bronchitus. I haven't been to the doctor but I've had bronchitus before so I know what it feels like. It feels like this. lol.
Sorry about your bloodwork Mara.
Ugh, bronchitis. I had bronchitis mixed with a throat infection once. The deep coughing and the inflamed throat were nice complements to each other. Are you sure you're well enough to go to Crossfit? I would probably skip it, but you know your body better than anyone else. Stay safe, girlie.
Ugh. I should not have gone to Crossfit today. I could barely do a pushup, my muscles were so weak No more for me till I'm closer to 100%.
Sorry your workout didn't pan out, Steph. The more you rest, the better you'll feel. I'm sure you'll be out there kicking Crossfit's a$$ soon enough.
Going to Zumba tonight! I love the hip movement and do ok when we're doing Latin-inspired foot movement, but the little pop-inspired steps do me in every time. Practice makes perfect, though.
It's so nice to see you too, Melissa I had a friend back in middle school who would get ingrown nails in her toe a lot. I have no idea what caused it, but anyway, she had to have a couple procedures to get the ingrown nails removed. She said that she felt instantly better whenever she had it done. I hope the same for you! And Puerto Rico is gorgeous! That's going to be a great escape for you and your DH.
Melissa - so jealous of your trip! I wish my DH would like to go on a trip. He has zero desire to take a trip that doesn't involve hunting. He sucks. I'm not on the Z pack. Yet. I'm slowly getting better. I went to Yoga class today and it felt surprisingly good. Thankfully tomorrow is Friday so I can hopefully rest up through the weekend.
I have been lurking, I apologise for not coming in to say hi and to tell you how things are with me...and that is pretty darn bad! Over the school holidays I didn't do much at all. Of course my DD#1 and I had the biggest wake up call when we hopped onto the scales (mine didn't change much but enough to ) but for my DD, I am crying for her She eats well enough but since she turned 6 she kept putting on weight and pretty much all around her tummy. It's hard to find clothes for her and everything. Doctors just kept telling me to watch her diet whcih we have been. She had a blood test on Monday for her thyroid (we have a big family history on both sides) and I will ring later for her results. She also has enlarged tonsils (like almost touching) so we'll be getting that seen to. My DD is only 8 years old and weighs 88lbs(she's 130cm though)...what has worried me is she keeps putting on weight and her diet has not changed (in fact its really good, lots of water and she eats her fruit, veges and low fat heart smart meats cos thats what I buy) and she plays tennis and is active enough too, so I don't know. I'm hoping the blood test comes back OK because then I can work out a better way for her to not put on anymore (no diets, they just want her to stay the same weight but grow taller if that makes sense!)
PLUS DH has been on my case (some may have seen a FB status I wrote not too long ago) and today he tells me he's meeting up with my bro to perve on the girls (they work in the city and the warm weather bring out the ladies with shorter skirts)...so yeah he just rubs it all in and makes me feel bad. I am cleaning out all my clothes (still got lots of my skinny stuff clearly outdated) and keeping what fits...I wear a size 12 (I think thats U.S 8?) which I dont have a lot of because I havent been buying in the hope I will lose more weight...which will happen I just don't need pressure from DH but I feel the pressure because my DD isn't in a good place herself...
My heart goes out to your daughter and I hope that the test results give you some clear indication of what may be up or what to do from here. Raising a daughter is so scary when it comes to things like self esteem and self acceptance/love ~ and it sounds like you are doing a WONDERFUL job of being sensitive to her feelings/needs while simultaneously being proactive about her health ~ you can't do any better than that, you know?
As to your DH, that makes me really angry!!! You are beautiful, but no one (beautiful or not!) should have to have the thought of their man oogling other women thrown in their face! Is he mean about your weight? Is he doing anything to help you, other than making you feel bad???
I do think that cleaning out your closet was a good idea ~I think that keeping clothes that don't fit around (if they are outdated, anyway) can be a reminder of what we aren't, you know? Like, seeing them in our closet can make us feel bad. Also, if you see what you really have that fits you and looks good, you can have a better idea of what you need to fill in with to really like your wardrobe. It is important to feel good in what you wear, regardless of the size, so keep at it!
I hope that your DD is ok, Michelle. If she has thyroid issues, I hear the meds can made a lot of difference. If not, keeping her active and giving her great foods (like you've planned) sounds like a great way to keep her where she is. I'm with Melissa on the topic of your DH. He upsets me because he upsets you. You are at a great size (I can't even look at an 8 right now), and he seems to have some really unrealistic goals for you, not to mention his behavior regarding other ladies.
Zumba was great last night. We're going to have a different instructor on Sunday because they switch on the weekends, so I'm hoping to see some new routines and songs. She says he's really easy to follow, so I'm excited to see what's in store.
Sounds like you had a great weekend, Melissa. It's no wonder, with all you have going on, that you weren't feeling well. I'm glad your run got you feeling better. Girls night sounded like it was a blast.
Steph, has the black lung left yet?
I took the kids to a pumpkin patch on Saturday, followed by a good walk through the neighborhood with my boys. On Sunday, I spent a good portion of the morning working my magic on 3 pumpkins. I'll post a pic of the results on the chat thread for those of you who may not have seen it on FB. Also on Sunday, I had a great Zumba workout. I really like the other instructor. He had all different songs and routines (except for one song, but he did it differently from my usual instructor). I got some great arm exercising in and am really feeling it this morning, although now that I think of it, some of the arm stuff may have been from the pumpkins.
As far as eating, DH made some whole wheat pasta with some red sauce. I think we're out of wine, so he didn't add any. I miss the wine He also made a rice pulau with chicken. We're trying to use up the last of our white basmati and are moving on to brown basmati. Also, the CSA finally came through on the kale, but I haven't had a chance to make the chips. I need to do that soon. Ooooh, and the three pumpkins resulted in a good supply of seeds, so I'm going to bake those probably tonight.
And, I weighed myself on Sunday morning--152.4! Zumba, you're working me right!!!!
The black lung is 98% gone! I still have a little cough but its not bad. Boy what a long week that was for me! I'm glad you're enjoying Zumba, Suzanne! My dd has tap class on Monday's and there is always a Zumba class finishing up when we get there and I always find myself wanting to bust a move
Goals this week for me are to go everyday on my lunch break to workout! MWF are Crossfit and Tues and Thurs are Yoga. I usually do go everyday but obviously missed a ton last week due to being sick.
I made stew in the crockpot yesterday with tons of sweet potatoes. It was SO good. Even the kids inhaled it
Sweet potatoes in a stew?! Sounds yummy! What else did you put in there? And yay for the black lung leaving.
Meat, celery, canned tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, yellow squash, minced garlic and one of those slow cooker spice packets. SO GOOD!
We're going to have to try that. Thanks, Steph
I don't like the time change either! We really don't need our circadian rhythms turned around twice every year. In case you can't tell, I'm always having trouble whenever the time changes. Your sister really does sound like a rock star for getting her body back so soon. I hope the weather holds up (at least for your running times and the parade). Halloween is truly a fun time of year.
OK, so now is a bad time of year for those of us watching our weight. What are you guys doing with all the candy? We have several people here at our office with small kids who have brought in their spares, so I'm pretty sure if I brought our leftovers, I don't think people would eat it DH's office might be able to use some more sugar, I hope.
Looks like we'll be able to donate some excess candy to the troops. Our daycare is taking donations
