It depends on your car. We were able to get three across in a Volkswagon Passat using Sunshine Kids Radian seats and a baby bucket. It's cheaper to get new car seats than a new car. (The Radians got renamed to be Dinamo or something...)

As for cars, I have a Mazda 5 when our VW died. It's not quite a minivan and not quite NOT a minivan. It has sliding doors and two rows of seating (2 in each row). Not much trunk space though.

My sister got three across in a Tahoe, but I wouldn't recommend it as it gets terrible gas mileage and it's really overkill just for three kids. She wishes she would have gotten a minivan after all.

We also have a Honda Odyssey and we LOVE it. I know, I know, it's a minivan, but really, with three kids you get a lot of stuff. Plus we can carpool with friends, which we couldn't do with our other cars. As an added bonus, we got one with a DVD player. Driving is much more pleasant now that they're watching the movie and not bored.

Good Ideas! If I wasnt already needing a new I would try to make 3 carseats work. I will look into a Mazda 5. Honestly I like driving minivans but I just dont know if I can consciously buy one, haha

I'm gonna need a new car after one baby. I have a Mustang and I know I'll either bump the baby's head or my head EVERY TIME. I've never wanted a minivan though, but DH wants more kids.. (I told him HE can be pregnant for the next one)..so I guess we might as well get one now.

I'm totally putting soccer balls and the the family sticker things on the back immediately.

I was ALWAYS one of those people who said, "I will NEVER have a mini-van!!" And get this... Before DS1 even turned a year old, we bought a freakin' mini-van (Honda Odyssey). And guess what... I freaking LOVE IT. Okay, it was a bit of overkill for one child, but we knew we were going to have more, and by the time we had DS2, it was a godsend. I think I won't be able to imagine life without it after baby #3 shows up.

The #1 thing I always, always HATED about minivans were those difficult sliding doors. But now... They're all power. You just push a button and they open and close themselves. Same with the rear lift gate. Just push a button to open or close. SO EASY. Plenty of room for strollers, diaper bags, etc.

Don't knock it till ya try it!! Wink

I've owned a minivan before... without kids! haha. I loved it, but I think its just realizing you have so many kids that you need one and being labeled a soccer mom. That's all. i need to just get over it bit easier said then done. Plus, DH says he wont drive it so I guess I would be going everywhere without him!

DH said the same thing to me about driving it. My car is like 10 years newer than his, runs better than his, looks better than his.. but he wants to KEEP his car and get rid of mine and get me a minivan. I have a Mustang - my dream car.. he has a civic from the 90's...lol. I'm like seriously?? You want me to get rid of MY car to get something I don't want ....and you refuse to step foot in it? LMAO

When I was pregnant with #3 we faced the same challenge. DH hated the idea of a mini van, and wanted to go with a Mazda 5. we test drove one and I was not impressed. Thats when we discovered the Mazda MPV. It has the storage room I wanted, but isnt nearly as big as other minivans. And, the gas millage is good. Weve had ours for over 2 years now Smile Now that #4 is on the way DH is realizing that his car needs to be up graded, just in case something happens with the Mazda. He is depating between an SUV ish vehicle, and something like the Mazda 5. We shall see. Nothing that we can do for a while any way

Van hater over here! Ha ha. I have always been against them. I hate riding in them. We ended up getting a GMC Acadia when DS had all his medical equipment and we knew we were going to have more. I LOVE it. It gets terrible gas mileage, but everything else is amazing. I wouldn't trade it for anything. In fact Dh asked me if we ever won the lottery, what kind of car would you want. I hit him and told him under no terms will I part with my Acadia! (unless for a newer version!) LOL

Im glad to know I am not alone in hating vans. We are actuallt really considering the Mercedes R class. Has the 3rd row and is not a mini van. Perfect!

My only suggestion will be check for how much storage space it has. A lot of the SUV's with 3 rows have nearly no storage space at all. So if you have all three rows up, then you may not be able to fit a stroller in it. My sisters Toyota Highlander is like that, so she still had to get the sunshine radians so all her kids could sit in the middle. :/ Something to keep in mind!

I did notice that most of them had no space in the back. That sucks! I have a big stroller too. I think most of them you can fold down one seat in the back to put a stroller but still, I need a place to store all my junk!

:lurk: from June

We've been discussing this as well being in a similar situation. My dream car that I own will NOT fit 3 car seats across and it makes no sense to keep it when we rarely go out with just DH & I. So we plan on selling mine and we've looked into the "crossover" SUVs where they aren't huge (like a Tahoe or Escalade) but have 3 rows. DH will only look at imports, so we're looking at the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX9, Volvo XC90, Toyota Sequoia (okay that one's not small) and Nissan Pathfinder. I just can't do a minivan. I. Just. Can't. Even though they are the best option. As far as the storage issue, I plan to try to get 3 across the 2nd row or just leave half of the 3rd row down and put my oldest back there. GL!

Yeah but I have a 2006 Honda that I bought brand new ( in 06, of course) that has minimal issues right now.. only cosmetic. There's other things I could be spending my money on.. besides a car payment! LOL!! I don't want a car payment :bawl:

THIS. We needed to upgrade my car so got an Odyssey shortly after DD was born and it's AWESOME. Sure, it's doesn't get great gas mileage but we can tote extra people or carry bigger things, etc. It's really not that bad!! I looked into the Mazda 5 but it was pretty pricey and didn't get as good ratings as Hondas.

Adriana, with your new car and just baby #2 on the way, (is it an Accord or Civic?) I would try to keep it if you can with two kids or give it to DH and sell his car?? My friend has an Accord w/ two kids and has even been able to put three in the back with a little strategy. However, when they go on trips they fly so they don't need a lot of space for travel. That's one thing with my Jetta and taking a trip with two kids, there was NOT much space for everything.

We have a ford fusion that we love for the three of us..we don't plan to upgrade with number two on the way. However, if my fear of twins comes to be reality we would be looking for something bigget and I would not shy away from a minivan simply because it doesn't look cool. Functionality is always my priority. If life would be easier and the kids would be more comfortable then mini van it would be. I want a happy family...not a cool looking family.

We have a Jeep Liberty and a Nissan Frontier.. so we're in trouble if it's twins lol

I actually like the Odyssey.. out of all the vans, I wouldn't mind having it.

We have an Acura MDX and love it (although we are getting close to outgrowing it- not much cargo room now). It seats five in the back.
I refuse the minivan. When we get a bigger car, it will be a bigger SUV!

The Acura MDX was our second choice. It looks pretty nice!

Adriana, what does your hubby have? Civics aren't that big, it's true, maybe you could sell it and upgrade to an Accord or a bigger Toyota if you like those more? I think SUVs are great looking, but not worth the price w/ the lower gas mileage.
We don't have car payments either, so even if you can afford one, it's better to spend money on something else or maybe you can put away the money that you would be paying for a car payment now and then you would have enough for a Rav 4 w/ trading in your Civic when it's closer to the baby coming? Smile

VICKI - He has a Toyota Avalon.. a big old honkin thing.. (he says "it's a Toyota Analon, Limited" Lol )

Ok so I think a small blessing in disguise has popped up!

A friend of mine I met about 12ish years ago when I bought my Ford (Car before this one..) called me out of the blue last week. Well, he's a little on the freaky side of life (I used to be a little more crazy and "free" with my days.. ) so I avoided his calls. But.. when I was off last week, he happened to call and I saw the called ID and recognized the number.. well, I answered the call and BSed for a bit.

So today, I recalled part of our conversation that he no longer works for "The Man", he now has his own car lot.. wellll... I shot him a text and asked him what he sold. He said used only but has friends at the Honda, Chevy.. AND TOYOTA stores!! I told him my concern about the BS of a salesman and my inability to do "stupid" and that we didn't wanna pay 35K for a vehicle..

He asked if I knew what I wanted so I told him..

Toyota RAV 4 - Limited Edition - V6 - Leather/Moonroof package.

But here's the kicker - I want it for the right price.

He said he would "find one at the Toyota store tomorrow".

:jawdrop:

Could this really happen!?!?!

I'll believe it when I see it.. but he's a pull-through kinda guy so.. would be cool!!! Biggrin
