Breastfeeding woes!

It's so hard!! My nipples were so cracked and then they got better but my letdown is awful. I just feel so overwhelmed and cry. I mean I don't mint the pain. It's just all the stress and thinking when will it get better?? I'm going to eventually supplement as I did with DS1 but I don't remember it being this hard. Just trying to hang in there and not give up so easily.

I just needed to vent.. As much as my DH listens and sympathizes, he just doesn't truly understand.

Are you using some kind of ointment for your nipples? I used one before, I think it was called lanolin. I put it on after every feeding & I never experienced any cracking or pain. Does the hospital you gave birth at or your doctors office have a breastfeeding clinic or lactation consultant you could see for some support? I found they really eased my worries in the early stages. In any case, your doing a great job & Lucas is benefiting from it so keep it up!!

I remember how much it hurts at first! I used the lanolin as well and it helped. You can also buy the breast cooling packs to help when you arn't nursing. It should get better soon! Hugs!

I agree, lanolin is great (just don't get it on fabric because it's HARD to wash out).

I would also recommend seeing a lactation consultant. They have a very large bag of trick to the BF to work out. There are even certain foods you can eat which help with making milk. Definitely call one! Is there a La Leche League in your area?

I found a La Leche League of Georgia website. There is a hotline phone number too.

I've also been having a tough time. Keren has a very strong suck (yay!) but it makes for very painful nursing sessions. My nipples have been feeling like they're on fire and I've been brought to tears many times Sad I have been giving her some bottles in addition to nursing - usually when I've been marathon nursing for 3 hours straight and Keren is still hungry and rooting. I have given her a couple oz of similac and it really settles her. I'm not going to stop nursing her but for my sanity I need to know that I can settle her with some formula and not feel guilty. The nipple pain is starting to get better now so hoping I can start feeling a little more in control.
It is so hard to know what the right thing is to do without feeling guilty or feeling pressure from others to exclusively bf. But you have to do what is right for you and baby.
I feel your pain. Hugs!!!

Yikes! Nursing for 3 hours straight! Do you even have any milk left at that point? My daughter was a quick nurser so she was done in like 15-20 mins tops. I can imagine you must be in pain!

I think we all can say we've experienced some discomfort at some point in time, mama.. But you're so strong and doing SOO good for your little Lucas by sticking it out. It WILL get easier! It can take a couple weeks, though.. MEGA hugs to you.. one thing we all do is empathize with the struggle, ladybug.

Nope, they were pretty much empty. I think he nurses out comfort too. DH got home at 5:30 and gave him an oz of formula and he was passed out. But it helped me sanity and my breasts lol definitely going to give him an oz when he does that again. It's like maybe my milk isn't filling him up. I don't know. But this morning my breasts were full and he nursed well. Little nipple confusion at first but he got it.

From what I understand your body will make what they need...and if you think maybe it isn't, try upping your supply naturally! Other than adding milk boosting foods to your diet you can also pump to up your supply...but that will be hard as long as your nipples are so raw. What about some sort of nipple shields?

The 'sucking for comfort' thing is hard...because you don't want to deprive them but there is a point where it isn't really doing anyone any good. I guess that's why people use pacifiers.

Keep up the good work!!!! You can do it!

My nipples feel better today. I did get Dr. Newmans nipple cream from the hospital that I forgot about but it's a life saver! Feeling 100% better today Smile

I got a script for the nipple cream - so cool that your hospital gave it to you, i had to get it compounded here.
And the soothie pads are really really helpful too. I've gone through almost three packs already.
I know how hard it is mama. I'm still dealing with a cracked and bleeding nipple at almost 6 weeks pp. But it DOES get better.
Oh and formula makes my baby pass out too.
I can totally understand your sanity. I am all for bfing but I am also all for a mama's sanity!

It's seriously the best all purpose nipple cream!!

Yes, me too! I don't feel bad at all for supplementing a little. Especially when it's only been an oz so far. My DH is also very glad that he's been able to handle it well especially with no tummy issues and for my sanity. So glad I have so much support especially from you all. So thank you!

Glad you are feeling better Nidia. I have a comfort nurser too and he has taken a toll on my nips. Glad you got that cream and are putting it to good use!
