gestational diabetes

I had GD last time and didn't care to test this time, but the nurse practitioner convinced me to do the 1 hour screen which of course, I failed. I refuse to do the 3 hour screen because I would much prefer to get my diet and daily testing going (they would not give me a prescription for test strips or lancets before my test...so dumb). Anyway, today I finally got the prescription for strips and lancets and can start testing. (I'm aggravated it took this long to get them!) GD sucks the big one...

Anyone else dealing with diabetes/gestational diabetes?

Took my 3 hour test today - on the fence about how I feel I did. My initial reading was only 2 points over where they wanted it so I don't know if they'll consider that a fail? Fasting is supposed to be 95 and I was at 97. The other 3 blood draws were through good ol fashioned needle so I'll have to wait until they come back.

Hopefully I DON'T get to join you on the GD journey but I'll be rooting you on, regardless! :D

I go next Thursday.. we will see. I didn't have it with DS but they thought maybe I did bc I had prehypertension, etc. But I don't think I did.. my mother had it though so I guess they think that I could have it bc my mom did. We will see how it goes. If I do, I would love to be buddies.

i reallly hope you guys don't have it! it seriously sucks...i can't even look at a piece of bread/fruit/dessert without thinking that if i consume it i could be harming my poor baby. for me, its a psychological game as much as a carb counting game.

also, i hate that my babies are born with a diagnosis...."infant of a diabetic mother." :(

I hope not too.. :( I know it sucks.. I try to cut down my carbs and after a few days of doing so I crave them SO bad!! Then I end up binging on something.. like cake, bread, etc.

I am about a month in from being diagnosed and am still struggling with my levels. It seems like if I have any bread product it raises my level too high so I am cutting that out and sticking to fruit and potatoes and milk/yogurt as my carbs. I have an appointment Monday with the Diabetes specialist and am afraid she will put me on insulin. My fasting numbers are never under 110 so I am guessing I will at least have a nightly insulin shot. :/

Is this a new diagnosis for you? If so, what prompted them to look for it so early? I was told they don't even screen earlier than 24 weeks.

How do they have you counting your carbs? For me they say 15 grams carbs = 1 carb. I am allowed 2-3 for breakfast, 3-4 for lunch and dinner, and 1 for snacks (but snacks should be equally balanced with protein).

I just now finally got all my supples for testing refilled, but I have checked two meals so far...high after lunch and ok after dinner. Last time I found that some particular carbs were worse for me than others even though they were technically the same number of grams. So I need to sort through foods and figure out which send my levels too high. Tomorrow morning will be my first fasting check so we'll see...

What is your favorite low carb snack? I like Greek yogurt (Dannon's is only 8 grams carbs and pretty good) and nature Valley's dark chocolate protein granola bars, but other ideas are welcome since I can't eat those two things for three months straight and still like them, haha

Because of my other complication and the fact that I had severe GD with DS, they did an A1C at 12 weeks and then did the glucola test after I saw the high risk doctor. I passed the A1C, but failed the 1 hour with a 217. O.O

That being said, My family does not have big babies. Jack was born 6lbs 8oz and my GD was not managed very well. I wish they would take family history into account. They blame it entirely on my placenta, but I have been told I have PCOS and that causes insulin resistance. :/ I think that is why mine is so extreme.

I have to stick to:
120 or lower 2 hours after meals and 95 or under fasting.
Breakfast 1-2
Snack 1-2
Lunch 3-4
Snack 1-2
Dinner 3-4
Snack 1-2

If I have more than 1 carb at breakfast my levels are high. My snacks don't seem to affect anything. Lunch I can have 3 and those are my best numbers. Dinners I can only have about 2 carbs or it gets too high. I don't usually have a bedtime snack because I fall asleep. Since we don't get home til nearly 6 we don't eat til then or later, I sometimes even fall asleep before I can take my levels.

I am finding that I can't have anything processed no matter the carb level. Bread of any kind seems to be out too. I can do potatoes in small amounts and fruit seems to be ok too. But since I am not able to eat the amount of carbs they want me to, I am sure I will be on insulin after my endo appointment on Monday. Also, my fasting is never under 110. No matter what kind of bedtime snack I have, it is always high. I will have to get used to that again. I had to psych myself up just to stab myself every time.

I eat mostly eggs/sausage for breakfast with a cup of milk. Snacks include string cheese, almonds, cottage cheese and fruit, yogurt smoothies, etc. I am not a fan of greek yogurt, but I know a lot of people swear by it.

I had my test this week. Haven't heard anything yet, but I'm not too concerned. I didn't have it with my other two, and I do occasionally check my glucose at work and it runs low, if anything. (I've checked it on a few different occasions and it has been in the 40's.. eek)
