Lunch meat

Ok so what's the deal with lunch meats and not being able to eat them?

Is it safe to have if I have the deli fresh slice it instead of buying it pre-packaged?

:lurk:

Deli meat can carry listeria bacteria which is more dangerous when pregnant. I don't think having it sliced at the deli makes it any safer. You have to heat it to steaming to kill any possible bacteria. I don't eat it while pregnant, but pretty much live on it pp!

So if I microwaved it until it "popped" (read: hot hot hot lol) that would be ok?

Yes, that would be okay. It's also the same for hot dogs - as long as they're heated up to steaming it's fine.

I have to be in the mood for hotdogs. Since I've been pregnant, I've eaten ONE and thrown it right back up. But, generally I like hot dogs maybe once a month. I have to get beef and DH has to fry them. Not that I'm picky or anything

The first thing I wanted after having DS was Subway!

ETA: and of course there is a Jimmy John's ad at the top of my prg.org page! How mean!

My midwife suggests steaming your lunch meat when you bring it home from the store, then you can just put it in a new container and plop it in the fridge. That way it's all ready to go. I think the listeria mainly comes from the meat slicing mechanisms.

I will be staying away from lunch meat entirely. I have had food poisoning twice from lunch meat and it is not a pretty sight. Definitely heat it to steaming and if you do the whole package in advance, make sure it is in a really cool place in your fridge and eat it right away after you take it out. In other words, don't pack it and take it with you unless you can keep it under 40 degrees.

my nurse also said listeria has been cropping up in bagged lettuce, so she told me to chop my own lettuce instead of buying bags.

The other day I went to Subway for lunch and got the steak, egg and cheese. It was so yummy! I love that they serve eggs during the day. You could also have there meatball sub, but it just doesn't sound good right now.

I'm always the crazy lady who asks Subway to microwave the meat first. They look at me like I'm insane. Blum 3

I've eaten subway many times since becoming pregnant, had it last night. Their meats are precooked already and just tell them to toast it for an extra few seconds and they will. It comes out steaming hot.

I don't think the issue is lunch meat not being pre-cooked; it's that lunch meat is higher risk for contamination with listeria which i think is due to standard practices of packaging/storing of the meat.

After DD was born our friends wanted to buy us dinner and bring it to the hospital. They were thinking something fancy like sushi or rare steak, but all I wanted was Jimmy Johns! And MAN, was it good or what!

I tend to be the odd one out on this topic. My friend ate lunch meat everyday during her pregnancy and her doctor told her it was fine. My midwife hasn't mentioned it to me and it wasn't in my packet of "things to avoid." I have read about it on the internet though. I will admit to having 2 deli sandwiches since being pregnant. Both times were before I told my bosses I was pregnant and we all went out to eat together. Please don't shoot me. I've also accidentally eaten feta and blue cheese. But man was it tasty!

I do try to avoid it, but given that my friend ate it everyday, I'm thinking its less of a big deal than everyone makes it out to be.

One question I have is if I ordered pepperoni pizza and save some for the next day, does it have to be reheated because of possible listeria?

If it does, I'm screwed! Lol

My NP didn't put a huge emphasis on the lunch meat thing simply because it's such a LOW possibility.. plus it happens with other foods. You can't stop eating..

I think the bottom line for me is to be smart.. I'm a HUGE fan of raw meat. Obviously that's not safe even when not pregnant so now that I am, if I can't have my raw steak, I simply stay away.

I'm with you though.. if I want a damn lunch meat sandwich, I'm gonna have me a lunch meat sandwich! lol..

When I was preg with DS The ONLY thing I could keep down was lunch meat. AND the thought of heating it to steaming made me gag. (always has) I can say I did eat lunch meat my ENTIRE pregnancy, AND hotdogs. (hamburgers make me sick) My mom ate all that stuff when she was preg with me and no probs, but also I figured if it was the only thing that didnt come back up I was going to eat it. and I CRAVED it. yes I got lots of crap for eating it BUT when you go 11+ weeks and can't eat anything... I took the risk to get SOMETHING in me. (and it was good) it also helped my reasoning bc there was a huge listeria outbreak in our area at the same time... and it was from cantalope. but no one was telling the pregnant women to stop eating their fresh fruits...... but you have to do what you are comfy with. I had a friend preg right after me and she wouldnt touch deli meat.

I just ate cold pizza. Hmm... Oh well! I'm like a few of you, MW nor OB has said ANYTHING about listeria, I've just seen it on the internet. I haven't had any lunch meat - but I'm not a big lunch meat fan anyways. If I wanted a sandwich, ...I'm probably gonna eat it.

Ha ha, I'm more that way in the evening. My tummy seems more settled in the morning, oddly enough.

I've been wanting ice cream for days but I'm afraid it will make me SO sick.

my dr today did not tell me to avoid any foods, or even ask me if I was taking a prenatal... Im guessing this is because its #2? totally had lunchmeat the other day. the only way I can eat it warm is on a grilled cheese.... swiss, turkey, thousand island and homemade pickles YUM! but heated to steaming. ick.

The listeria thing drives me nuts. Just because you ate it 50 times last pregnancy doesn't mean you won't get listeria the very NEXT time you eat it! There is always a chance you could get it...you've just been lucky. They say to avoid it because the chance exists...it doesn't mean it's going to happen every time. Saying "I didn't get sick last time" doesn't somehow reduce your chances to get sick this time.

Ok, sorry. Getting off my soap box now...it's just a pet peeve of mine when people's rational for doing something is 'well I did it before and it was fine'...especially when it's something that is a chance type thing. "I dove with sharks 50 times and I never got bit..." Hummm...

I don't know where I have been, but I had no idea that you weren't supposed to eat lunch meat..lol!! Maybe that's why with ds, roast beef would completely wreck me... (tmi:):puke2:
