Things we'll need...

Trying to get a list together of what I'll need for the hospital and first few days after so I can make sure I have it in the house. So far I have:

Nipple cream / Lansinoh (anyone know of a better/diff brand??)
Nursing pads
Diaper cream
Obviously diapers, wipes
Motrin (dreading those cramps when I first start nursing Sad )

What else?

:lurk: usually The hospital provides diapers, pain meds, diaper cream, wipes and nipple cream. I bring a coming home outfit, a blanket, swaddler, snacks for s/o or d/h, clothes, etc. didn't need nursing pads yet but may this time. As far as nursing cream I used medela s brand and had a good experience.

FOOD!!! That was the biggest mistake I made last time. I didn't bring any food for myself. After all those hours of labor and not eating the first thing I could think of after baby was out was how hungry I was. The nurse found a sandwich for me & I ate it right in the delivery room. Then I sent DH to buy me some food but by evening I was starving again and had nothing.

I'm trying to think of foods high in protein that could last a couple days in my backpack cause I don't want to just have snacks. Any suggestions?? Those little trays of hospital food are not nearly enough for a breastfeeding mama.

To add to your list you also need stuff for yourself, toothbrush, paste, deodorant, hairbrush, slippers etc. AND don't forget CAMERA!!

Our labour units have mini fridges in every room so food is definitely good to have. The hospital feeds me but DH won't get fed by them. That said, last time my meals were plenty big to share and DH would buy his food at the hospital cafeteria or the little coffee shop downstairs. We were there in the day though so it might be closed at night...anyways, food for the mini fridge.

We also need to bring a blanket and pillow for DH. There is a window seat/bench for him to sleep on but no blankets.

My hospital will provide all the diapering stuff for sure and the pain meds. I'm not sure about breast pads and nipple cream....

So for baby I'll bring a couple hats (I make hats), a going home outfit (or two) and some blankets. I'm thinking of having a boy bag and a girl bag in the trunk, then hubby can just grab whichever after we know.

For me I'll bring my normal toiletries: Tooth brush, tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, make-up (ha ha ha ha), deodorant, pads (because the hospital ones suck), hair brush. And clothes: PJs, coming home outfit for me, lots of underpants, slippers. And then some entertainment stuff: Book, cross words, camera, mp3 player, tablet, etc.

I was just thinking about this the other day...I have no idea what all I brought last time!

This! ^ The hospital will provide 99% of what baby needs.. I'd actually focus on the coming home outfit and things for YOU.. a change of clothes.. undies.. and yes, food. Smile

Don't forget phone chargers and cameras / chargers.. medicines (Rx.. not OTC - hospital will provide those!).. any fav pillow or blanket.. stuff for DH to have if he wants something specific..

**lurker** yup, the hosptial should provide the diapers and wipes and all things needed for baby (they have swaddles, footless sacks etc) They even had a pump at the hospital that i used, but if you have one and will use it, plan on bringing it too..... I just brought a robe, nursing bra, toiletries, my pillow and a comfortable outfit for home (tshirt and yoga pants) oh and yucky undies, and by yucky i mean not your super cute undies...lol and DH brought a change of clothes and blanket too..... i'd probably bring a sweatshirt too, just in case. I delievered in July, but it was SOOO HOT and the hospital was SOOO cold....thankfully my parents live right down the street from the hosptial so they brought DH a sweatshirt. Remember chargers, a pad of paper and pen (i just brought a folder so i could remember details that i might have forgotten later about the birth, etc. and it came in handy for all the paperwork we got) slippers or flip flops, camera, video camera, magazines to read or whatever and def. some snacks.... DH was able to order food too, but some hospitals vary on that.

I haven't started packing a bag yet and I always seem to bring to much so I won't put to much thought into it. I like having a diaper bag ready with all the essentials. As for me, I like having some comfy clothes, & slippers. I also like to bring a boppy for breastfeeding. The hospital seems to have just about everything!

ETA- just looked online about packing a bag and forgot that nursing tops and robes are nice to have too. Oh and some lip balm and lotion!

After my shower, I totally wanted to clean my ears out (do it every time I wash my hair.. ) and didn't have any.

Yes, Q-Tips. Smile

:lurk:

I had three bags, my bag (the Mummy bag) with clothing/ nighties, toiletries, a book maternity pads, nursing pads etc. Bag 2 was the baby bag with clothing, boy and girl coming home outfit, a snappi for my nappies (my hospital uses cloth), some of my own cloth nappies to go home in, socks, basically anything needed for baby. Then there was the Daddy bag, it had camera, chargers, snacks, change of clothes for hubby in case I got to labour and he assisted in the shower etc.

I found it easier to put what each person needed in different bags, then I knew what was where really easily.

I would recommend a small labor bag that you bring in first and then bring everything else after baby ... Chapstick, hair ties, camera and batteries, snacks, toothbrush and toothpaste, massage items, tennis balls (in case of back labor) and feminine pads for right after. That way you only need one small bag to begin with and dh can grab the rest after your Lo arrives.
