First Appointment!

I had my first appt at the birth center on Friday. I met with one of my favorite MWs (there's 8 or so in the practice). We chatted for awhile about all sorts of things. I asked about the new Maternity21/Harmony tests and she said my insurance wouldn't cover it because I'm not AMA and they're over $1000 out of pocket. So, NT scan it is! I'm having it done the week of Thanksgiving. She tried to find the HB with the doppler and warned me she might not find it (duh) but she DID. I was stunned and overjoyed to hear that sweet little thump thump. I signed up for centering (group prenatal care in the evenings). We didn't do it with DD but I think it'll be a good excuse for me and DH to get out of the house together. My first centering class is in mid-December.

I just bought a Big Sister necklace for DD to give her the day before the NT scan. I'm going to tell her about the baby and then she can come to the scan with us and see the baby. Family comes into town the next day so we'll have DD show them her necklace and the u/s pic. Smile Eeep! So excited.

Sounds like a great appointment, that's awesome that you were able to hear the heartbeat so early on!

Is the centering thing you speak of "Centering Pregnancy"? There is a midwifery clinic near me who offers that, which is group prenatal care and they meet monthly and also have a 2 hour class associated with it, related to birth, kind of like a prenatal class. I have a friend who is doing it now, thought with it being her 2nd child the stuff you learn isn't really new for the most part.

At my birth center, centering involves monthly meetings and eventually biweekly meetings. There's a topic for discussion and each mom has some time with the MW alone for belly measurements/doppler check/private concerns. Its not so much a birth class as a community of sharing. They offer birth classes but those are separate. I'll go to these in lieu of traditional check ups. Centering does tend to be a FTM thing mostly because its in the evening and you can't bring young kids. They love it when BTDT birth center couples return to share their experiences.

Sounds like the same thing as what my friend is doing. She feels it is very birth class like (but with a consistent group of people) They have topics each meeting, I don't know all the details, I know one week they talked about possible complications, like what would happen if you had to be transferred to the hospital, or have a c-section, have high blood pressure etc. They do move it up to every 2 weeks for the 3rd trimester and they also have the private midwife time for BP check, weight, doppler and belly measurements. They meet during the day, I think it's from 9am-11am and they take turns bringing snack for everyone to share. Children are more then welcome and there is a little play area at the office for them to play in. Hope you enjoy it!
