I had my second OB appointment yesterday with really the only purpose of checking for a HB. After moving the doppler and cramming it into my bladder for what seemed like an eternity, he turned it off and said that he was going to get the u/s machine because he couldn't find the heartbeat. I was freaking out, but thankfully he left the door open and was only gone 2 seconds so I didn't have a chance to let myself totally go there. He came back and quickly found the baby floating around with a strong heartbeat. Whew! So scary. He said my uterus must be really soft because the baby is much higher than he/she should be at this point so he didn't have the doppler high enough when looking for the HB. I laughed because yes, I'm sure my uterus is nice and soft with 4 pregnancies in 6 years, but so it is. And it made me feel a little better about my ever-noticeable pooch to know that the baby is actually up pretty high and it's not just bloating at this point. All in all great news and we got to see the baby which made it even better.
Is anyone doing the new first look test? It's new since DS2 and apparently is 99% accurate at detecting any of the various forms of downs. I need to call my insurance company to see if it's covered and if it is, I'll likely do it. The results obviously won't change anything for us, but it will change my doctor's prenatal care and screening which makes me think it's better to find out sooner than later.
Yay!!! So glad he found the little one's heart beat. Extra woot for sneak peak at baby! Congrats! :yahoo:
If the First Look test is the PCR based test of your blood then I'll totally do that over the NT test.
I think I would have cried a river (as soon as he didn't find a HB) if that happened to me, so scary to think something may be wrong. Thankfully everything came out great for you.
:woohoo: for a heartbeat!
Glad they were able to find the baby with ultrasound. At my 2nd appointment I was 11w2d (or so) and it took my midwife a long time to find it (and her student tried first and couldn't find it at all) It was a bit nerve wracking, but in the end it all worked out. My midwife said this early it's hard to find the baby with the doppler, it takes some trial and error to find the position.
As for the first look test, I have never heard of it. We will be skipping the 13w ultrasound and blood test and are simply opting for a 20 week anatomy scan.
I've never done any kind of prenatal testing and I'm (hopefully) going to see midwives this time and I'm not sure at all that they even offer any of that. They've mentioned a third tri u/s to check placental position, but no other u/s or testing has been mentioned.
What a scary moment to have to wonder if something was wrong! I get nervous if it takes a little long to find the heartbeat. I'm glad everything is going great!
Glad you got to see the baby and hear the HB!
I just had it last week. I'm going to the OB this evening. I'm hoping all results were fine. I had it with my last 2 pregnancies as well.
