Water Birth?

So...we're planning a home birth in our own bath tub. We've never used it but I have cleaned it a few times with disinfectant and wipes. (It gets dusty)

My question is, have any of you had or attempted a water birth before? Did you do it in your bath tub or one of the air ones? What do I need to do to make sure my bathtub is sterile...and...I'm also starting to wonder if I might be more comfortable in the air tub...but I really don't want to spend the money to buy one or rent one. My concerns about my bathtub is how hard it is and shallow. It is the big oval garden tub and it has a built in seat...But i don't think it's going to be very deep.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had a home birth with my last baby but I gave birth on the bed, not in water. My bath tub is way too small to give birth in, I couldn't even labour in the tub. I hear that you need a certain dept of water in order to have a water birth. You might want to check with your midwife to see what she thinks is best. I know that there are several places that rent birth tubs (it comes with a 1 time use liner) and it's about $100.

Thanks Kristin. I guess I'll just wait and see. This will be my first labor and I'm so anxious and excited.
I'm researching all the time about labor and birth...so much so...that now I think I've amped it up and
I still have so long to go before it begins. KWIM?

At least 12 weeks until we're "full term"...15 weeks till the due date...and he might be late considering he's my first labor.
Who knows. I'm just waiting, waiting, waiting.

I know he's not ready...obviously far from it. I don't want him out a minute before he's ready.
I'm just so..."ready" in a manner of speaking. I can't explain it. I know we're not ready...but...
Yeah I can't describe the feeling.

I'm personally taking the preparations for birth a lot slower now because without my birth kit I know I'm not prepared for birth.
I think these feelings spawn from the fact that his nursery is done and friends have already given us so many hand-me-down clothes that I've already cleaned, folded and hung in the closet, ect. The bassinet/pack-n-play is next to our bed.
DH bought me a glider chair for Christmas and it's together and in our bedroom.

I'm just so anxious to meet him, hold him, nurse him. But at least the weeks tick by somewhat fast.
He'll be here before we know it!

Steph - that's great that you're so excited! I know my excitement will come as May gets closer. Right now I feel like I'm nowhere even close to being ready. Everything is packed away and I'm not mentally prepared for a baby in our house again. Maybe because we got our kids a puppy for Christmas so I'm dealing with that?! And by the way, terrible judgment call on our part - puppies are so much work! And add to that 3 kids and me being PG and it's not pretty a lot of times. Smile

Puppy years are something I NEVER want to go thru again!!! Sorry to sabotage your thread!! BUT probably the hardest times in my life! And let me tell you my DD was colic and NEVER slept and I still think that was easier!

Our puppy is 11 months old now. We did recently find a dog on the side of the road with both back legs broken.

We fixed her up and she's managing well. But it was really hard there for the first month.
I'm hoping we'll have a better routine with her before Aiden arrives.

I'm not actually ready for Aiden to be here as far as the house, etc.
Still putting finishing touches on his nursery.
Still need a lot of things - but...I was just getting everything ready so fast and it made me so anxious for him to arrive. Now I'm taking the "nesting" a lot slower.

Our baby shower is in 6 weeks. I'll be 31 weeks and with all that we're getting as hand me downs ... the anxiousness for him to arrive will probably come back in full swing. lol

Physically...my body is preparing...braxton hicks...etc. He's in my ribs...
I'm feeling pretty big at only 26 weeks. So...yeah...plus just the excitement I'm having awaiting his arrival.
