I think Stephanie hit the nail on the head on this. I would also suggest to your friend, outfit - nice neutral colors would be good for a family portrait.

Yes, use gradient map on PSE - it'll be much easier for conversion. You can select the side of her face that is bright and tone it down a bit so when you do conversion/adjustment it won't be blown.
