    Default Seymour Johnson AFB, NC

Apparently that's where we're headed to next! Anybody on here stationed there currently or in recent years? Looking for information on the area as far as where to live and such.

We aren't there but close at Fort Bragg, NC. North Carolina is a wonderful state. We have a bit of everything that's wanted. The beach to the east and mountains to the west. Sorry I don't have much help on where to live, but most housing in NC is very low priced. Large houses for low rent or low mortages. We bought a house that is about 4,000sqft for 176,000, which was tax value. It even has a finished and unfinished basement. The finished basement is a master bedroom and bath with a living room and small kitchen. So if times got rough, we could rent it out. Best of luck!

That's where all my family is!! I went "home" while my hubby was deployed last year and just got back from there in March.

Goldsboro is a very nice town. It is small, but there is a lot to do close by. Raleigh is a good sized city about an hour's drive. The beach is an hour or so away as well. You also have a big, huge outlet mall in Smithfield which is only about 20 minutes away. And then you can even make it to Myrtle Beach, SC in a couple of hours.

I would say anywhere that is relatively close to the base is not a good place to live. I had the advice given to me that if the name of the street is like a last name, like a tree, or like a nut (i.e. Walnut, Ash, Williams, etc.) then don't go there! The base housing is very nice from what I have seen. And the base (though small) is nice as well. They have a decent sized BX and Commissary. There is also a great playground/picnic area for the kids. There is a mall in Goldsboro, but it is kindof a joke.

Did you have any other questions that I didn't answer? I'll be glad to help any way that I can. I like Goldsboro a lot!! It is so close to the beach, that's the one thing that I LOVE!!

Oh, and I was going to tell you that if I were going to rent there again or buy a house, I would either go for the Rosewood area, somewhere in the Hood Swamp/Mark Edwards area or off of HWY 117 towards Mar Mac and Mt. Olive there are some really nice houses. I've got several really great friends down there, Air Force wives, (also a small mom's group), so if you need to contact someone there, let me know!!

Feel free to add me on FB too. You can search my email. It is ariel_elizabeth2002@yahoo.com

I'm not familiar with the area, but I have lived in Jacksonville, NC and agree that NC is a great state. I hope you enjoy the area too. When do you PCS?

We're waiting on orders still, but we WILL be going there and soon. DH should know more next week. Due to the nature of what he does, he'll be "rushed through" as fast as they can but he has a couple of TDYs that he has to complete first (I fully expect one to be in 2-3 weeks despite not having orders yet lol).

Ariel, thank you so much! I'll be looking you up on FB! And will be googling those areas. Have heard that base housing has a long list and that we'd get more for our BAH off base.

ETA: My SIL lives in Jacksonville, so I'm excited about that! She's not very helpful about SJAFB area though since she's only traveled to the base a couple of times (she's a retired Marine).
