Bayleigh's Birth Story
Tiff had been having contractions off and on for a few weeks. At her last week,s appointment, she was dilated to a 2. She went to the doctor on Tuesday (4/3) and when they checked her she was dilated to 3. For reasons I have never found out, the doctor decided to induce labor. She calls me to tell me that she is to be at the hospital at 4:30 am the next day.
We leave Tuesday after work drive out to Az --we arrive at about 2:30 a.m. (UGGGG) Zayden of course slept about half way so when we got into the hotel, he did not want to go back to sleep. I finally get him down and Tiff texts me to tell me that she got a call from the hospital that there were no beds available and they would call when they were ready for her. (Double uggggg) While that sounds nice so we could all get some sleep, it was almost five am when I got to sleep and Zayden woke up around 7.
With a little free time, we went to Waffle House to get some breakfast and then took Zayden swimming. Tiff and Jeff came over around 1 while we were hanging out in a very cold pool. I had her call the hospital to check again since she hadn?t heard from them and the charge nurse told her to go ahead and come in at 2.
Tiff being Tiff, we got to the hospital around 2:15 ish. She signed in and the receptionist told us to take a seat. Over an hour later she tells us there was some emergency and had not forgotten us. At 3:45 the charge nurse calls Tiff on her cell phone asking where she was since she was expected at 2. Ummmm, in your waiting room?????? Guess there was a communication problem between the desk and the nurses and the nurse hadn't been told that Tiff was there.
So we go back..............and wait some more. Nurse checks Tiff and she is still a 3. So we wait. Around 6 the nurse-in-training comes back to ask some questions about earlier ultrasounds etc. For some strange reason, Tiff really wasn't clear on her due date and claimed it kept changing. She had changed doctors at about 15 weeks and they didn't get the records from the first doctor. I had explained to her that the date goes from the first ultrasound, that later ultrasounds are not reliable due to differences in growth but she didn't get it. Every time she had an ultrasound and baby was measuring ahead or behind, she assumed that changed her due date. So she had a due date (to her) ranging from March 28 to April 9. Sigh. Turns out they did not want to do the induction without confirming that she was 40 weeks. The nurse in training called it the elective induction --again never could figure out why the doctor wanted to do that --Tiff swears she did not ask for it and it was all his idea? Hmmmm
Tiff and Jeff swear they did not get an early ultrasound, first one was at 18 weeks. I pull up the pic on face book and it shows the estimate of how far along she was. We call the nurse back to show her that and by the time she comes, she tells us the doctor has spent the last few hours on the phone and found the nine week ultrasound (that the kids swore did not exist) and she was exactly 40 weeks with a due ate of 3/4.
Tiff is still a 3 and 80% effaced - so they start with a gel to soften her cervix. This does start her contractions more regular. Charley came to pick me up so I could go to dinner before a long night. Came back right as they were checking her -- she was still a 3. Dose two. Still three, dose three. She is having pretty good contractions but no progress.
About 3 am they start pitocin to start moving things along hoping the stronger contractions would cause her cervix to ripen. The contractions start being more painful and longer. We had discussed that she should wait as long as she can for the epidural as that can slow things down. (There was no way she was going to go totally natural) Jeff took that to heart and kept telling her to wait and wait and wait. By 4 she is in tears, exhausted and the contractions keep coming. We tried to rest but she was in so much pain. Jeff chugged like two red bulls to stay awake and tried to help but you could tell she wasn?t feeling the love. So finally I told her that it was probably time for the epi cause she was really hurting.
They had to push fluids etc so it was around 5ish before they came in to do the epi. Hard part for her is she wanted me to hold her hands (she is terrified of needles) but the ?policy? of the hospital is Jeff and I had to sit down in chairs across the room ?I guess so we wouldn?t pass out? Really?
Anyway. Epi kicks in, she is able to sleep some, Jeff is wired thanks to red bull and takes off for a bit to do some laundry etc. (umm okay)
8:30, doc comes it to check. She is now --wait for it --dilated to a 3 and 70% effaced (hmm thought that should go forward not backward?) Doc breaks her water. He tells us that should move things along and baby should be there around lunch time--Nurse later says well really should dilate 1 more centimeter per hour so we were still about 7 hours away.
I call Charley. Tiff said from the beginning that she wanted both me and her dad in the room when Bayleigh was born. We explained the difficulty because of Zayden cause he couldn?t be in the room and even if he could, I didn't want to go there with him. So Tiff arranged with a friend to come to the hospital to watch Z when the time came. I tell Charley whats going on, tell him that we are looking maybe lunch time or early afternoon. Tiff calls her friend to tell the same.
We chat for awhile and then we start watching a movie ?this hospital had awesome free on demand movies and we had started the night before watching Fast Five but didn?t finish. So we started again. About an hour into it, around 10:40 ish nurse comes in, doc is on hold on the phone, asked that the nurse check Tiff while he holds. Tiffs like ya ya ya, please tell me I am not a three anymore.
Nurse lifts up her gown and says something about the bloody show. I was like huh? Look and there was definitely blood. Tiff starts freaking but nurse says no, thats okay, its normal, puts her fingers in to check ?immediately grabs phone, tells doc she is 10 +2 and baby is half way out. UMMMMMM
Right about then Jeff comes back. There is a flurry of activity, nurses start coming, they set up random stations.
I call Charley to tell him and he needs to get there NOW. He says he is about 15 min from the hotel and will get there in about 20 minutes. I am trying to explain to him that he may not have 20 minutes ? I seriously did not understand WHY he needed to go back to the hotel (found out later they were walking somewhere so had to go to the hotel to get the car ? to his credit he had sent me a text 20 minute earlier before they went walking to ask if there was any progress) Tiff calls her friend to come but of course she was just waking up so may not get there in time either. Jeff calls his mom who was going to wait in the waiting room to see if she could watch Z.
Flurry of activity continues, doc comes in, Tiff gets prepped. Doc sees a minor cyst in her and decides to drain it before the birth starts. I hear a bunch of people coming in and out and keep looking to see if Charley makes it. Tiff starts getting a little disappointed that he wasn't there but we have a birth to see!
Charley sends me a text that he there but no one is there for Z. Then he sends a text that he is right outside the room. I tell Tiff he is there but can't come in.
Doc starts telling her she can start pushing and she starts. About two pushes into it, I look over at the curtain separating us and the door --and I see a little blond head peeping around so I tell Tiff that not only is dad there, her brother is too. YIKES. (Tiff later said she thought I meant they were right outside).
We see the head start to come out and doc tells her to rest a minute to allow her to stretch. Waits a little bit and then two more pushes and out comes Bayleigh! I swear it almost looked like the doctor was going to drop her! She was born at 11:12 am on April 5, 2012. Jeff cut the cord and they put her on Tiff's chest and clean her up.
I went over to take Z so Charley could see --course once he went over to be with baby he didn'tcome back to take Z...Grrr. Z plays on his ipad for a bit -The doc and nurses realized he was there but I guess didn-t mind? Anyway, I took him out to the waiting room where Tiffs friend and Jeffs mom were. Told them everything was okay and left Z with them to go back.
Few minutes later they weigh her (7 lbs 6 oz) measure her 20.5 inches (same as Arya) They wrap her up, put in the eye drops, give her her shots and hand her to me!! I held her even before her dad did!
Tiff was fine, needed a few stitches. I held Bayleigh and then asked Jeff if he wanted to hold her but he knew Tiff wanted her back.
I had talked with Tiff about nursing several times and discussed that she should nurse asap and she wanted to. So I asked the nurse when she could start and the nurse said go for it. So I helped her get situated and Bayleigh started nursing.
Tiff was actually released from the hospital early Friday afternoon --I thought that seemed a little early but that is what she wanted. Bayleigh has her first doctor visit today at 1 (Wed) so we will get a good idea of how she is doing!
We came home Saturday -- it was pretty wirlwind visit but Charley wanted to be home for Easter. Man that is a LONG drive to make twice in such a short time. We will plan on going out again maybe in May and be able to spend a little more time and have some down time.
I have a bunch of pics on facebook but will add some here once I get my camera downloaded!
I STILL Cannot believe that Zayden was there to witness this though from his vantage point he couldn't see anything major but did see her as soon as she was born! I think that is pretty cool. Charley said he was planning on taking Z out if he started crying or fussing or if Tiff started screaming as that would upset Z but since none of that happened, he wanted to be there for the grandbaby!
