Cambodia Mystery Illness

Have you guys been hearing about this on the news?

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/09/world/asia/cambodia-mystery-illness-sidner/index.html

DH's closest family member (his cousin, but he calls her his sister because they grew up together as siblings) lives in Cambodia with her husband and 3 young children. Luckily, they are on vacation in France right now...we are hoping they figure this out before they get back there! It's scary when something is killing children this quickly and they don't know what it is or how to stop it.

Oh, wow. That is awful. Sad I hadn't heard. I hope they are able to figure out the cause and treatment very soon.

This is terrible! Carrie, has anyone spoken to your family yet? I can't even imagine what all of those people and poor kids are going through. I hope they figure it out soon. KUP

No, I asked him today and he hasn't reached them yet. They normally vacation for about a month in the summer so I'm hoping they won't be going back for another 2-3 weeks.

I was reading yesterday that it's actually a strain of hand, foot and mouth disease. Kind of freaked me out because we just went through a pretty nasty bout of it a few months ago. As in, Noah lost all his fingernails and toenails from it. Pretty scary stuff.

It actually ended up to be a combination of a strain of hand foot and mouth (enterovirus 71) and a disease carried by mosquitos there called dengue. The enterovirus 71 was not present in all the patients, which was throwing them off. Thank goodness they at least now know what they are dealing with and how to treat it (or how NOT to, apparently)

And that is crazy about Noah losing his fingernails and toenails! I've had hand foot and mouth twice...it's horrible.
