Anyone NOT brought their LO to the dentist yet?

We haven't brought Ryken yet and I'm feeling kind of bad about it. We're good about brushing his teeth and he only drinks water and milk, and rarely has sweets. I'm going to call tomorrow to get him and Sully appointments.

We have not done it either. I have been waiting on Lyla to mature a little more. I knew there was no way she would even open her mouth if we took her in, so I didn't bother. She has had such a fear of doctors, and is finally starting to get over it. When dh and I got our teeth cleaned last fall she didn't even want to go in the building, and cried when we got in the waiting room. We haven't taken her with us since.

She got her first haircut this week and sat really still, and did what the lady asked her. She also sat in the chair and waited patiently to get her ears pierced (she REALLY wanted it done). I think she may actually do what a dentist asks, with enough talking about it ahead of time.

Nope we haven't gone yet either, there is a new pediatric dentist that just opened this month right down the street, so I'm gonna call next week for an appt. I'm hoping he doesn't freak out.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! I'm just nervous Ryken's going to freak out too.

I'm nervous too! I'm currently trying to find a book to get to try to prepare him a little. I've been talking about the dentist off and on for a few weeks now. Anyone have any book recommendations? I don't want anything that talks about pulling teath or anything like that.

We have gone a couple times. But I suppose that was to be expected from me! lol! Alyssa just came to the office last week in fact and she did SOOO well! Last time she didn't want to sit that well. I tried to kinda stay out of the room a bit so she wouldn't want me and she did great. They were even able to get xrays on her. (NOT typical for a 3 yr old in my experience.)

I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised how the kids will do. And if you are able to do a pediatric dentist that is awesome!

Katie- BTW, ADORABLE siggy pic of your boys!! Love it!!

Haven't been yet and making an appointment soon. My mom was just saying she was watching some news program about dentists seeing children and the dentists were saying, "We see FOUR year olds who haven't been to see a dentist yet!" WHOOPS! LOL. We'll be going soon. But to be honest, I don't see much of the point going super early. I know Jackson will be fine going even not having gone earlier.

Kristen- Going so early is honestly more for the parents than the kid. For parent education and get to know you. We don't do a ton or 1 or 2 yr old exams (starting to do more) but mostly 3 and over.

Sophia has been.....4 or 5 times? I figure it's free so why not? She does great, gets her teeth cleaned, and I get to reinforce how important it is for her to brush twice a day so that Dr. To will be proud of her. She's very excited to hear him tell her how shiny her teeth are and get her new spongebob toothbrush and toothpaste. LOL Of course she was a little apprehensive at first but that's why I started her very early. She sat in my lap the first two times and he just cleaned her teeth with gauze and flouride, let her hold the instruments, looked around in her mouth a little. By the time she was 2 she was sitting in the chair by herself.

I'll be taking Layla to her first appointment soon! You guys are stressing me out waiting this long! ha ha

Ava went for the first time shortly before her 2nd Birthday because she chipped a tooth. They want to see little ones at 2, 3 and then every 6 months after that. We try to be really careful with our mouth care and teach the kids the right way to take care of their teeth.

One of the girls I work with has a kids Ava's age, and he just recently had to be put under because he had so many cavities at his first dentist visit. She says she was diligent about brushing too.

Did you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have their first dental visit by Age 1? Biggrin

No pressure, though, ladies! Ha ha

So apparently I am THIS mom Sad After this thread, I found a dentist and Zayden's first appointment was yesterday. Man, you guys would have been SO proud of him. He did amazing. Opened, listened, sat still, cooperated 100% I think he was the best behavior I have ever seen!! I kept wondering where my kid was!!! I had put off this appointment so long since I was not sure he would behave.

Found 3 small cavities right off the bat so we wound up having to do x-rays (which are not always recommended by some if no issues but that's a debate for another day, I was not planning on allowing routine x-rays but with the cavities we had no choice)

Five small cavities total on four teeth. One major cavity between his teeth that is VERY close to his root. We just barely missed having to do a root canal but it needs a pulp cap or something and/or crown. Sad

They are going to TRY to do it with laughing gas over two visits. I do NOT want him to be so traumatized that future appointments are an issue and the doctor understood that. If it doesn't work, we will do oral sedation to see if that works. Some kids get really hyper with that, Zayden had it at one year for his echo and it was fine but I don't know about now. Sad

Bad mommy award of the DECADE here!

This is why it frustrates me that pediatricians tell you it's okay to wait until the kids are 3 or 4, even though the AAP recommends age 2 (even MY Pedi told me there was no hurry). If, for example, a kid is genetically predisposed to get cavities more easily, or his teeth are really close together so that you will have to start flossing earlier than you would think to, these things can be caught earlier by going earlier. But most parents think it's no big deal to wait, and a lot of pediatricians are pushing that thinking for whatever reason. Sorry Z has to go through all that. I hope the fillings go smoothly!

Joshua's pedi was recommending it at his 1st birthday. We went shortly after that and he does go every 6 months. All the did the first visit was just to look in his mouth, didn't do cleanings etc. until he was 2. It really should be the same, all pedis recommending what the AAP recommends.

We haven't taken Aasha yet. I better get on it. Poor Zayden - I hope the dental work is quick and painless.
