Home Improvement - Kitchen/Bathroom Hardware

Okay, the painting the door thread got me thinking. Lately I've been really wanting to install some hardware on our kitchen and bathroom cabinets and drawers (probably starting with the kitchen). Has anyone every done it? Whenever I watch home improvement shows I always think kitchens look so much better once the cabinets have hardware, plus my drawers are really hard to open without anything to pull. But I don't have any idea how to pick something...do you just pick something you like or does it have to "go" with the style of your kitchen or something? Maybe I should take a picture of my kitchen and some of you decorating mamas should help me pick some Wink

Home Depot has this thing where you can go online (link below) and pick your cabinet finish and then pick the hardware finish and see what it might look like on your cabinets, but I feel lost at how many options there are! My cabinets are oak, by the way, and I have black granite countertops. HELP! Biggrin

ETA: I feel like I'm drawn to chrome or stainless steel finish

You and I, Carrie, are in the exact same boat! Our kitchen is hardwareless and I want to add some. I think it will help it looked more finished, but I'm scared of drilling holes into our holeless cabinets. What if we make a mistake?! Also knobs or pulls? or both? Sooooo many choices.

I'm more drawn to the nickle/stainless finishes as well. but something in a matte finish. I also have considered black, since we also have black granite counter tops (we also have oak cabinets!) but I just don't know! I think I'll see how it goes for you first, then if it looks good, we'll jsut copy you. Wink

Can you post a picture of your kitchen? It will help to narrow down choices of hardware for you.

We're actually going to be adding hardware next weekend I think. Smile We have very dark, glossy, cherry-ish cabinets (I dumped my pic off my work computer so I can't show you) with black granite countertops and we're going with round, brushed nickel knobs on the cabinets and coordinating pulls on the drawers. We were going to go with all knobs, but then I saw a similar kitchen with pulls on the drawers and it really looked nice. I'm so excited, because it's really gonna look great--definitely adds something.

Amber--when we were looking at houses, we saw a kitchen with your color scheme that had the black knobs and pulls--it really looked nice.

HA! I will post a pic this weekend. I am thinking that black would look good in your kitchen with your backsplash. But I'm with you...I'm nervous to drill holes in my cabinets! My parents will be here for a week at the end of March, maybe I'll get my dad to do it Wink

Jess, we better get an "after" pic! Biggrin

Jessica- Yes! Make sure to get before and after pictures! Smile Can't wait to see how it looks.

I think black would look nice in my kitchen with it in it's current state, but I want to replace the countertops at some point with something in a white/cream color. I also think that maybe I should match the other metals in our house. I really like the oil rubbed bronze, but I'm waaaay to cheap to stock my house with it. The stainless steel/nickel stuff is much cheaper. Although, I do need to replace door knobs upstairs, so I may consider it. I think the silvers are more timeless too. I worry in a few years the black/oil rubed bronze will look like the shiney gold brass looks today- a bit dated.

It's a good point. Also, in the millions of episodes of Property Ladder I've been watching lately, I've never seen anyone put black hardware in the kitchen. No idea why, I just haven't seen it. It is usually some type of a matte or brushed silver. Shiny anything seem to look cheaper I think.

Carrie- You're right! I've never noticed anything other than a brushed silver as well. I'm pretty sure when I get brave, that's the way we'll go.

Since we're talking home decor.....I'm replacing the shiney brass door knobs in our house. Would you get the levers or knobs? The kids already can open our current knobs, so that really isn't a factor.

I think if I was replacing everything I would go with levers. They look more stylish to me and are more unique. I'm trying to think if there is any downside to them? (is there a significant price difference?)

I agree with Carrie--go with levers. Although they are pretty expensive. Someday we're going to replace all the gold with brushed nickel in our house. So goofy--all the fixtures are silver, but then the door levers and hinges are gold. Yuck.

I think that must be builder's standard because both houses I have bought have been the same. I do find it very strange that they wouldn't match them.

Me too Carrie! We have a light oak with black granite too, so I'll just see how yours turns out Wink

How funny that there is 3 of us that have kitchens with oak and black granite. Must have been the trend of the moment- or a really good sale. Wink

I do think the levers are a lot more expensive than the knobs. If this was our forever house, I'd have no problem doing it. but since it's not, I hesitate. the gold/brass is A LOT cheaper than the burshed nickle door knobs. When we finished our basement last year, we did the brushed nickle, and they were 3 times the price as the good/brass one. The hinges were quite a bit more too. That's another expense....I feel like if we chane the knobs, we should redo the hinges and that sounds like a total PIA. Why do house projects seem to snowball like that?
