Opinions about sickies?

So, what do you guys do when you have plans to go somewhere where there are lots of other little ones, and you all have colds? Do you go? Do you stay home? We are supposed to go to a first bday party this afternoon and then to church, but we all have colds, pretty decent ones. I still send Noah to daycare because, well, it's daycare and it's just a cold. But like the birthday party--the little girl it's for gets sick really frequently and so I'm unsure what to do. First birthday parties are SUCH a big deal and we really want to go and feel decent enough to go. I've called and left a message with the mother as well as texted, but haven't heard anything and we're supposed to be there in 2.5 hrs. Then with church, I just don't know how other parents would feel. Noah's got a bad cough and runny nose. So, what would you guys do?

I stay home. Just because I remember how irritated I was, having a preemie, that I had to leave somewhere because someone else decided to come sick. Expecially if it's a decent cold.

NOw...sniffles and coughs....those I make as a judgement call. My kiddos currently have coughs. But they are not sick in any other way. No snotty noses, no fever, no change in activity levels. So I have been going on, business as usual.

I'll be honest and say I would appreciate sick people staying home. Zac gets sick so easy and doesn't even have to be in direct contact with a person to "catch" the bug. I know that no one wants to miss out on a fun event b/c of a little cold but what might be a little cold for one person could turn out to be a full blown respiratory infection that includes steroids for someone else. I hope I'm not sounding harsh but we've just had such a hard time with this.

Since having Kara I agree with this. I haven't been very shy about asking sick family and friends to wait until they are over their cold or allergies or whatever before coming to meet her. If we are sick we usually stay home too. I just hate doing a lot while sick, it makes me feel worse is't of the time, so when we are sick we just rest at home.

We ended up going to the birthday party, but not church. The mom was fine with us going, we just stayed away from the birthday girl. None of us have colored snot or anything else, just bad coughs, so we're not feeling all that bad. Noah and I both get sick quite often; I've always been very susceptible to respiratory/sinus infections (I was hospitalized with pneumonia when I was two & again with severe bronchitis on my fifth birthday--it's been a never-ending vicious cycle ever since) and it seems as though Noah is following the same path. That being said, I'm super easy-going about sickies being around us because we'll get sick regardless, but I do try to be sensitive about being around others. Now, having a newborn--not so easy-going about that.
My big issue at the party was that Noah pooped and peed his pants and it took me 20 minutes to get him cleaned up! (it was a week's worth of poop--ugh!)

*****On another sickie note--Noah keeps getting styes in his eyes (we're on the 4th or 5th one in like, 4 weeks)--PA at the pedi's office says there's nothing we're doing wrong, nothing we can do different to keep him from getting them, but she did give us antibiotics because the last one got so horribly infected. Anybody have any "real world" advice?

I am pretty mellow about being sick --cause I am *always* sick LOL or Zayden is always sick. If he has something major like croup (which knock on wood he hasn't gotten since April but before that he had it at least once a month) we would stay home --or at least not be around other kids if we were out. Colds, ehh, those are endless and ongoing. That said, I would NOT have him around infants or newborns nor would I be there. I was pretty sick at one of Z's performances a bit about and Age and Arya were there and I tried really hard to not even get close.

As for styes UGGG I had those horribly as a child...I HATED them. What would sorta help was using baby shampoo and warm water and really scrub the lid of the eye at the bottom right were the eyelashes grow under your eye. No idea how to do that with a LO our kids age but for me there could be caused by a buildup of skin cells blocking the duct so I woudl have to clean that every day to help prevent them. Thankfully I eventually out grew them.

I thought the same thing. Wink Although I do understand not wanting someone to sneeze and snot all over your newborn, regardless of the reason. When my allergies are in full blown attack mode, I don't really want to be around anyone anyways so it works out wel. Allergies totally stink!

We are the same & opposite. I am pretty mellow about being sick, because we are never sick. I feel like we're around sick family all of the time, but we just don't get sick. It's kind of weird. Especially since I am so lax about cleanliness. I am probably TOTALLY jinxing myself here Smile

Kristen- Or, maybe you're building good immune systems. Smile

Prior to having a preeime we were never sick. Now Andrew catches every.little.thing! Then passes it along to the rest of us. I swear, I'm sick more staying home with the kids than I ever was working full time in a hospital.

Moral of my story- kids are germier and gorsser than the hospital- which says A LOT! Wink

It may not be contagious but how gross to have someone snotting and sneezing and just gross around your baby. LOL I didn't mean it from a "we don't want to catch allergies" POV, LOL. I just don't want to see someone constantly blowing their nose...its bad enough I see Deacon pick his nose 24/7.

Yep, I'm with Jenn on this one. And, to me, they look the same, so how am I supposed to believe you that it's "just allergies"? Sometimes I think people just tell you that to make you feel better about their sneezing, nose blowing, coughing, germy self. I know allergies are not contagious but I'm not convinced that you have to have colored snot to be contagious. I think a lot of times people have a contagious cold and they think it's just allergies.

ETA: I feel like I care more with Layla (you're supposed to care less with your 2nd, right??) because she gets sick so often and so easily. And when Sophia would be sick, it was not a big deal, she still slept fine and life would go on. Not Layla. She sleeps horribly, we're all miserable (including her of course!) and I would do just about anything to keep her healthy at this point. So I'm in the STAY HOME camp on this one.

Lol! I know, Jenn. I was just teasing. Wink

I think blowing noses is sooooo gross! I cannot stand listening to it! And, if someone does it while I'm eating that is the end of my meal. I use my Neti pot over blowing my nose if I'm home. Even more gross, I know, but at least no one sees it but me.

Although, I have an odd facination of using the booger suckers on my kiddos. They still let me, and will bring me thet bulb syringe to clear their nose. That Sluuuuuuurp sound it makes it sastiftying, knowing I'm helping them breath better. And besides, it's my kids boogies- so they're beautiful. Wink

THIS. Once Deacon got bronchitis at daycare and I asked the pedi if it was contagious because another kid had it. She said the virus (or whatever) that causes it is contagious but bronchitis isn't. I was irritated that the parents brought the kid to daycare, with breathing treatments and all, and then Deacon caught it. I missed several days of work because he was too miserable to be there. So even when people say they aren't contagious you never really know. Heck I've told people that Deacon wasn't contagious when he has a cough but who knows if he really is. He ALWAYS gets a bad cough with his ear infections but for all I know he has two different things and I am passing it all off as EI.

I know - I don't mind Smile

1. Yes, blowing your nose no matter what I am eating or drinking makes me want to puke.
2. I should be a NetiPot spokesperson, I tell everyone I know that is sick to use it.
3. OMG - I want to gag just reading your slurp comment. *holding back* LOL

I can't stand the slurp sound. It really makes me gag. I did manage to use it a couple times on Cora, but couldn't handle it with Lyla.

We stay at home if we know it is contagious. If it is a cold, and they have had it for a few days, but have a left over drippy nose or cough, but feel fine, we will go. I don't want to be at fault if someone is having to pay for medical bills, miss work, and be miserable.
