QOTD Wednesday

Because I am feeling ill - I want to be selfish and pose this question Smile

What are some of your GO TO remedies to feeling better? Natural or meds?

Every time the weather changes I deal with horrible allergies. Now that's usually not a big deal since I have an Rx for allergy meds, however, I can't take them while pg. So I am doing the following:

honey/lemon in hot water...all day...over and over
Luden's "cough" drops - ha, more like Luden's candy
Netipot for sinuses
Turned the fan lower

I just need my allergy meds darn it!

For headaches I do caffeine and a tylenol or caffeine and some essential oils.

Stomach ache nothing really...it usually passes

Hmmm, what are some other illnesses? With Deacon I use essential oils first before we bust out the OTC meds.

I hope you feel better soon! I feel bad for you that you have to be at work when you feel like crap.

I don't take meds much, usually only when I have a really bad headache.

Headaches: Drink caffeine / eat a snickers bar / take out my pony tail / take a shower or bath / massage my shoulders / then take 2 tylenol if it's still there. LOL

For the common cold I usually just tough it out and not take anything.

What do you normally take for your allergies? I'm in the process of trying to find something that actually works.

When I was pg, I took Zyrtec and used my Netipot like I was trying to drowned myself. I also really like Aveda's hot tea. It always helps me feel better. I tried local honey too, but didn't notice a difference.

Now for my allerges- I'm willing to take whatever and as many different allergy meds as I need to make them go away. Currently, I'm taking Singular, Zyrtec at night, and Zytrec-D in the morning. I'll take a Benadryl at night if I still feel like I need something. I medicate pretty hardcore when it comes to allergies.

I'm pretty proactive about headaches too. I'm prone to migarines and spend several years going to a Nerologist every 4 weeks to get rid of the pain. A lot of my headaches will turn into a migraine. I start with 800 of Ibuprofen, Tylenol Sinus and a coke, if that doesn't work I do Aleve and a nap (if possible), then resort to my Maxalt if it's still there. A real massage would be awesome too but not all that possible to do for every headache.

I don't take anything for a cold, unless it moves to my lungs. I also don't take anything for a stomach bug.

Ashley - I feel bad for me too. ha Mainly because my throat is killing me and my eyes are itchy.

Amber - I can't remember....I was on an Rx but the dr had me switch to an OTC med that I just took as soon as the seasons started to change. I took it daily no matter what and wasn't getting sick at all. I'll try to look at home and remember what it was. I agree - I tend to over medicate almost when it comes to allergies because they cause so many symptoms and issues.

Headaches are headaches to me but I know exactly when a migraine is hitting so I medicate immediately with my Rx and get in a quiet, dark room and just lay down. Sometimes I sleep at work on the floor of my office for 1-2 hours at a time. Migraines tend to be brutal to me and if I can take my meds and sleep they go away.

My only go to remedies are otc meds, really, for pretty much anything. I also tend to just leave stuff alone and let it work through.

I just came down with yet another sinus infection due to allergies--I'm averaging about one per month for the last 7 months or so, ugh. I get allergy shots once a week and take one otc claritin every night and still have major issues. Right now I'm taking dayquil/nyquil just to ease the symptoms, but I don't do anything other than that until it gets super duper bad, then I go to the doctor for meds.

For my every day headaches (yes, every.single.day) I leave them alone. But when I have a migraine (about 1-2x/month) I'll take 1500 mg tylenol or the equivalent of aleve and drink a coke if I have access to it (I usually don't, though) and just work through it (because I usually get them at work). If I'm at home, I do the same--just deal with it and move on. If Andy's home, I'll go lay down, but otherwise I just have to fight through it. As soon as I know we're done having kids, I'm going back on topomax--that stops my headaches all together, which is such a blessing. Amber, I used to go to the neurologist too and get shots in a nerve in my head for my headaches/migraines. He told me that if I came back again, I'd have to have surgery to remove some of the nerves. I haven't been back since, lol.

For colds, I don't do anything other than otc meds as well, just to ease the symptoms. There's not much else that I treat.

Jenn, hope you feel better soon!

Totally agreed - I can't wait to go back on it when I'm done nursing!

Jessica- That's intersting they were going to remove nerves. Yikes! When I was 18ish, I use to get 4-5 migarines a week. It was horrible and dibilitating, I missed several months of school and work trying to get them to stop. I probably had 50 different Rx meds that didn't work, took 5 preventative pills a day, plus whatever migriane medicine I was trying for the moment. I also did Biofeedback a few times a week. I thought it was pretty hopeless that I would be pain free but then the clouds cleared, and Maxalt came on the market. I think my problem was none of the medication got rid of a migraine fully. It just dulled it a little, Maxalt fully got rid of them.

those little pills are expensive! my copay is 120 for 6 pills. But when I have a migarine, I'm more than happy to pay 20 bucks to get rid of it.

Now if I could only find something that did the same thing for my allergies.

it was magic for me! If you ever try it, they have a pill and a sublingual (under the tounge) version. Heed my warning and take the pill. Wink

I think I'm going to have to resort to to shots for my allergies before I OD or get arrested for a meth lab. Blum 3 I probably should find out what I'm allergic to while I'm at it.

If its anything like Imitrex then I'll pass - I'd rather have a migraine.

Good luck on allergy testing. I did that around this time last year and it showed that I wasn't allergic to anything! I take that back, I am slightly allergic to mold and dust....but seriously, who isn't?

When I first started getting migraines my PCP really seemed to want me on Imitrex. I tried the shots, the nasal spray- the works! Why anyone would want to shoot medicine up their nose during a migraine is beyond me. that stuff was horrible! Never again!

Same here....I hate it. I did injections and pills. The side effects are brutal. I was asked to be in a free clinical trial for a new version of it and I turned it down. Once my dr gave me a nasal spray for my migraines that literally knocked me out for 20 hours straight. One puff up the nose and I slept perfectly for nearly an entire day.

Carrie - if you are reading this...what was that called?

That was my favorite stuff ever! Although, with a kid I can't get that knocked out anymore.

Jenn -- Hope your feeling better by now!

For me, I take Benadryl most nights for allergies, Ibuprofen when I have a headache. If I get sick, then I take NyQuil/dayquil.

I used to have horrible migraines when I was younger --they would knock me flat on my back for days --but somehow I have actually outgrown them and have rarely had a migraine in years.

I have gotten out of the habit of taking anything for a cold or allergies, since I have been pg or nursing most of the time in the last few years.

long hot showers
a hot cup of green tea, with honey, and small slice of ginger in it
