Totally Random

Do you let your little one have Pop (aka Soda.. for my American friends.. or Coke I think some of you call it...lol coke is a brand btw Wink )

And what about things like gum? at what age do you think its okay for them to have pop/soda/coke and gum??

I'm a mean mom. I wont let them have gum, I'm afraid they will choke on it, or they will just swallow it and ask for more like its candy. Claire has tried pop, didn't like it, called it "spicy" it was coke, I wonder if they might like sprite better (yes I've been stalking you Carrie) I figure longer I can avoid drinks like that the better, we dont have a lot of pop in the house, just some coke zero, so they don't see it much. They mostly drink water, milk and as a treat juice

I figure the day will come when they will want to drink it or have gum, I know that Addi will start earlier then Claire will (ie if Claire starts at 6 Addi will still only be 4) with some things its hard when you have an older sibling doing it. SO for those with even older siblings it must be harder.

Every now and then he gets sprite but it's rare.

Gum, he has had it but we don't usually allow it. Every time my granny sends him a card in the mail she includes a stick of gum. I have him chew it for a few minutes and then it has to go in the trash.

No soda, no gum...no juice, even. I'm a mean mommy. Wink

I'll be okay with gum once they're old enough to dispose of it properly. I chew gum when I workout, so it's not fair to say they cannot once they get a little older. I don't drink soda or juice, so it's easy enough to keep the kiddos away from it. I'm not sure when I'll let them have it. It doesn't even occur to me to buy it, so I'm assuming it will be a while.

Mean mom here too! No sodas though DH sometimes lets him have a taste -- he doesn't like it so far. He is more a lemonade and apple juice man LOL

No gum! He would totally just swallow it!

We don't let our kids have soda or gum, either. Jude actually just got a stomach bug and we tried to get him to sip on some Sprite by calling it a fizzy drink. He wanted nothing to do with it, and I was okay with that! If he asks for gum that I'm chewing, I tell him it's a Mommy treat. Lots of things fall under the Mommy treat category...coffee, Reese's, cookies, soda, etc.

We don't give Miles pop, not sure when we'll allow that. When he's 16? Wink

No gum either, or candy really. He's so picky he wouldn't eat it anyways. The only candy he gets is m&m's and suckers.

The only time my boys get soda is if they steal a sip from someone that has it. They used to be juice fanatics but I recently broke the habit b/c Zac was having a pretty bad reflux problem. All Zac drinks now is water and soymilk (he won't drink cow milk).

As far as gum goes occasionally he'll get one of those suckers with gum in it but he doesn't really understand the point of spitting it out. He loves candy so he gets a small piece if he eats all the food on his plate, which doesn't happen very often.

This is exactly us. Alyssa had diarrhea for about a week or so last week and I tried to get her to drink some Sprite and she didn't want it. We don't give her juice too often but she doesn't usually drink too much of it even if we give it to her. She prefers milk or water and thats ok with me! No gum either I tell her when she is bigger. She does have quite a sweet tooth though and loves candy. We try to limit how much she gets but what my mom gives her is another story!!

We will occasionally Josh let Josh have Sprite. The first time he was allowed to have it was at his 3rd birthday party. Of course, he will sneak ours when we are out to eat. We don't really drink soda at home really, just for special occasions, when we have people over. In fact, we still have some Coke in the pantry from Josh's birthday party.

As for gum, the only time he has that is when we are flying on an airplane. And he doesn't really chew it. He eats and swallows several pieces as the plane is descending.

We've tried gum twice...both times S swallowed it. I told her no more gum, we will try again when she's 4 and see if she is old enough to remember not to swallow it. She talks about it ALL.THE.TIME. "When I'm 4 I get to have gum and try not to swallow it"

She gets Sprite every Friday night when we go out to eat. Never at home, and never any other kind of soda. I rarely let her have sugary stuff so I like that being her little weekly treat. At home she drinks water or soy milk. At school she drinks water, Horizon organic milk (I take her milk to school cause I don't want her drinking regular milk), and limited juice. On the weekends I let her have one juice box per day and I buy the ones that are half fruit juice and half vegetable juice.

And, Kim, ROFL...I was like "what a coincidence that this came up on my FB and on the board!" HA! Stalker!!!! Wink
