Toddler? Preschooler?

When do our kids stop being Toddlers and start being Preschoolers? I don't mean like when they start preschool but there seems to be a developmental/age thing that they move from toddlers to preschoolers?

I've noticed that the baby food/snack differentiate between the two stages. While Z was in preschool last year, I still considered him a toddler -- but now it seems like all the toys/foods/sites geared to three year olds start calling the preschoolers.

I am actually pretty sad about that.

When our babies started walking, I thought it was neat they were no longer babies but toddlers --but "preschooler" just sounds too old for me, like my sweet little guy has just grown up too fast! Sad

Thats my random comment/question for the day!

Very true! Except I told Z this week he was mommy's baby and he said No mommy, I'm a big boy! LOL

I still can't believe they are turning three. How did that happen?

I would consider a 4 and 5 yr old a preschooler.

I agree. Preschooler sounder way too old! Sad I had to hold back tears at Ava's 3rd b-day, I'm going to be a mess when I can't call my kiddos toddlers anymore.

3+ is definitely considered a preschooler in the marketplace as it applies to food, toys, etc. Sorry Sad

Oh and if you get those developmental emails from BabyCenter or whatever it is, they change to "Your Preschooler" when they turn 3.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Running off to sob in tears while clutching Z's baby blanky and hiding my face in his crib.

Okay, not really, but I feel like it! LOL

Seriously though, that pretty much is what I have noticed. That and I cant honestly say he "toddles" anymore, rather runs ahead at full steam.

These transitions get so hard! Especially for my last little baby.

Ooo! Oo! Ooo! So maybe it's a regional thing? Here they cannot go into Kindergarten until they're 5. So for me, she's still a toddler (that doesn't toddle) Right? please? Wink

Not really regional...depends entirely on the school or school district. In Cali, they just changed the law for public schools to have to be 5 by 9/1 but Z's school follows they old rules where they have to be 5 by 12/1 of that year.

I like the toddler thing --think I'll stick with that (even if he is in preschool and also doesnt toddle) LOL

Addi starts kindergarten NEXT SEPT :eek::eek: so she will be 3 :eek::eek: here we have JK (junior kindergarten) so they go the year they turn 3, even if they turn 3 dec 31st (although you can hold them back) so Addi will be 3 for the first few months of kindergarten

Wow Kim! I can't imagine saying that my 3 year old was in Kindergarten even if it is JK. I'd be terrified and lost if Ava started school next year. In our school districts I believe it is still 5 by 9/1 of the school year. Things may have changed since the many years that Kayla started school.

I'm okay with calling Ava Douglas a toddler or preschooler. Both of them sound really young to me. And when I look at her she still has such a baby face and the way her hair is make her look really baby-fied so it's fine Wink

LOL, I must be the only one okay with it. Maybe I'm only handling it well because I have a new 'baby' of the family.

I'm more than okay with it...I actually have to laugh at the thought of calling Sophia a toddler. Maybe it's because she looks like a 5-year old already, but she's definitely no toddler. I stopped calling her that a long time ago. I guess it's just a perspective thing??

I'm pretty okay with it too. A little sad that she'll be at school next sept, but its only half days and we are already doing preschool now to get her used to it so shes away three mornings a week there.

I think Addis too young to be a toddler anymore lol. She too acts much older at times.
