a Whale or a mermaid?

Some of you may have seen this on FB but for those who haven't here it is

A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:
"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! "

While I agree that being thin does not make you a beautiful person, and whales are way more awesome than mermaids (unless you're asking Ava). I don't really care for message. The truth of the matter is, being overweight is not good for you or your children, and it has nothing to do with the kind of person you are.

I think this is sending out the wrong message to a society already battling obesity.

For me I never took away from this story that its good to be unhealthy, I just took away that the media puts so much pressure on everyone, especially young girls to be mermaids. And although I do not want my child to be overweight and unhealthy I do want her to love who she is and not feel pressure to be an unrealistic media ideal of a mermaid.

I agree. If I had a girl I wouldn't want her to feel pressured about the way she looks just because the media says women should look a certain way. I would (and do teach Josh) how to eat healthy and how important exercise is to be healthy.

Thanks Kim! I saw this on FB as well.

I'm torn, I see both sides to the message.

eating healthy and exercise is IMPORTANT but
I am 41.9 year old (not 42 yet !!) and I have "curves" that just don't go away anymore ..so I don't think I qualify as a WHALE but I am far away from a MERMAID... and if I had to make a choice I rather be a happy loving mom as a whale than a sexy hot CHILDRENLESS MERMAID

Agreed! I'd take kids any day over a great figure.

Good thing we can choose to be both a happy loving mom and stil lbe sexy hot! Biggrin

My body is MUCH different now than it was before children, but I am also much healthier and way more fit now. When I weighed 100 lbs, I couldn't run a mile to save my life. Now I don't think I will ever be that thin, but I can run 15 without stopping and I'm stronger physically and mentally. And much hotter than I was back then. My children already are taking away those lessons that eating well and fitness helps you feel much happier and more adjusted. Ava always asks to run the last little bit ways of a run with me. And she thinks it's a blast! I hope to keep that alive in her and have her always have an active lifestyle.

Yep, that's what I don't quite like about the message too Amber. It's a bit extreme, as if you have to choose one side or the other, or like all skinny people are lonely and sad.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the message it's trying to convey.
