Breastfeeding nightmare! (xp)

So yesterday I pumped three times at work and only got 3oz out... total (I use the Medela Harmony manual pump)! I was so upset about it, and freaked out that I wasn't going to be able to pump enough out for him when I'm here at work that I went straight over to the hospital to rent an electric pump. I spent an hour talking with the LC about which model would be best and she showed me how to do everything. I spent $60 on what she told me was the "Cadillac" of breast pumps (this was to rent it for just one week just to try it out... $17 for the week and $45 for the breast kit with the bottles and pumping needs), used it twice last night, and only got DROPS out!!! I'm so unbelievably frustrated I don't know what to do. I had it up on the highest possible setting and NOTHING! I get more out of my manual pump! How is that possible? Am I drying up already? Thank God I'm getting off early today and am off tomorrow so that I can pump like a maniac (probably with my manual!) for when I have to work on Monday, and then Tuesday on my day off I can take that dumb machine down there and let them show me what I'm doing wrong. I went and bought some fenugreek thinking that maybe my supply is dwindling... Any thoughts?

Pumps aren't an accurate indicator of milk supply! Lots of women don't respond well to pumps. I kept hearing that from La Leche League leaders, midwives and lactation consultants before we'd figured out my supply issue - turns out I do have a supply issue, though.

I've heard that to increase your response to the pump, try and have the baby nearby. Maybe sit near your DH while he holds Trystan?

Good luck and KUP!

I make a lot of milk but I could never get anything bout when I pump. I can get more from just hand expression!! Definitely doesn't mean you are necessarily drying up. Try having a pic of baby with you. I'm not even bothering getting a pump this time. A few nights where I've just needed sleep I have had DH give him similac. Of course even just one little bottle makes my boobs want to explode afterwards!

Good luck. This stuff is not easy!!

Hope you get it sorted out Krystal, sorry I don't have advice just virtual hugs! Never liked pumps much myself and haven't tried an electric.

I had casually used a manual Medela pump, and also a small electric/battery powered Medela (sorry don't remember the names) I didn't get much. I would pump until my arms were tired. I would be persistent and keep going until I filled the bottle though.
When #2 was little I had to have surgery. I only knew about a week in advance, so not much time for pumping. I got the big fancy Medela prescribed by the dr. (I am not sure if your dr prescribed yours or not, but ask if he can to save some $$). The first few days, I tried several times a day and would get next to nothing. But towards the end of the week and the week in the hospital, my supply really went up. By the end of the 2 wks, I was filling the bottle up (both bottles at the same time at that!) in about 10 minutes.
For me I think my body just had to get used to the pumps sucking, since it isn't really the way babies suck. So maybe if you stick to it, it will get better?

This. Also I have heard that a hand pump has more pressure/suction than an electric pump. Good luck Krys I hope you can get enough pumped!

i think i've heard that hand pumps are better at getting the milk out as well. i actually had to hand express the other day because i had a ginormous rock in my boob. i was shocked how much i could get out. i should have saved it but it was the middle of the night and i just expressed it into a burp cloth.

what about trying to hand express a little and then start pumping? maybe if your boobs start a let down it will be easier? good luck!

How do you do this by hand?
