Giving birth in Japan

Do any of you ladies (and lurkers) know anything about giving birth in Japan? My BFF just got a BFP (Edd in Oct!) and will be in Japan from April 2012-April 2013. Any and all info would be appreciated.

Hm I imagine she'll need to speak to someone about ensuring citizenship in the US, probably a good idea to talk to an attorney

Two moms at my daughters KG are Japanese I can ask about things there. Have you seen babies the movie? One of those moms are Japanese, it *seemed* pretty similar to birth in USA. As someone once told me, "You just have to know the word for push." I would check into if they have midwifes or just obs, take advantage of the entire system, enjoy the experience. Tell your friend congratulations and good luck! Also she may want to check out on FB if there is an english speaking parent group.
As for citizenship, the parents will have to go to a consulate together and apply for citizenship for the chid (at the same time apply for passport and ss card) The parents will have to prove proof of residency in USA prior to the birth. There are a few forms to fill out, but their is pretty much step by step instructions online. The most difficult thing (IMO) is getting the NBs passport picture! Lol

Thank you for the info! If you can get any information from those other moms that would be awesome! I'm curious if their health care model is similar to that of the USA. I know there are several things that are very important to her (vaginal birth, epidural, hubby present at all times, nursing right away, baby rooming in) and I want her to be able to find a provider who is going to advocate for this for her. I just don't know what the norm is in Japan.

I asked, but it wasn't much help. They are both single children and have all their children abroad Sad sorry. I know there is a european board on here, maybe there is a japan one? I have seen some moms here in china, buut can't think of anyone here in japan.
