Not getting my way... (xp)

So for months I've had my mind made up that I was going to try and have a natural birth in the hospital. I feel well prepared for everything, but with this incessant back pain I've been having, I don't know if natural childbirth is going to be possible. I cry out in pain every time I try to shift in bed, roll over, sit up... pretty much anything. This pain is so excruciating I don't know what to do. I can't imaging trying birth naturally and deal with this back pain at the same time... I know I won't be able to handle it. Im so upset, I don't know what to do...

Girl....for my birth it was like someone took my birth plan and arranged it so that everything I did not want ended up happening! I know how you feel...sad and like you don't have control. Only you know your body and what you are capable of tolerating. Get that epi if you need it and don't feel bad about it. The important thing is to get your baby here safe and sound. Too much physical pain can slow or even halt your progress. Do what is best for YOU and don't give it a second thought.

Why can't you keep your birth plan? You don't know how you're going to feel, how fast you'll progress or even how bad the contractions are going to be. There is no point in getting upset about it because you just don't know. As with any plan for anything, adjustments will probably have to be made, but you just can't plan for everything. As Jenni said, it's more important that he arrives healthy and that you are in good enough shape to take care of him than anything else. But don't let go of what you want, just reserve the right to change your mind if your wants change.

Sorry you're in so much pain already! Maybe when your labour starts it will all shift away from your back. It's okay to resign yourself that you won't tolerate too much though! I've said the same thing myself, I'd like to complete a natural birth - but if I end up with back labour again I know I'll dive right under the epidural :). Anyway you have a goal which is all you can really do for now. Hopefully things will sort themselves out and you'll get what you prefer, but if not then safe baby delivery and happy Mommy is the other main priority!

I had a natural birth in a hospital and I didn't think I'd be able to do it either. We spent 5 weeks taking very expensive HypnoBirthing classes and I thought for sure that I was going to end up wasting my money. I started having contractions at 33 weeks that they ended up stopping with medication, but they were pretty painful and I even told DH that I didn't think I'd last when the real thing comes.

Well fast forward 4 weeks and when I went into labor it was all in my back. It was pretty painful, but not unmanageable and I had the natural birth that I had hoped for. My labor lasted for 10 hours (4 hours at home and 6 hours at the hospital.) I found that the birthing ball and Jacuzzi tub helped me the most with my back labor. Avoid staying in the bed and laying on your back. That is the worst position you could be in. You will be amazed what our bodies can do once you go into labor. You can check out my birth pics in the link above my signature picture. I'm even smiling in some of the photos.

I will tell you that I had an epi with my first birth and the experiences were completely different. I would take a natural birth over an epi any day, but its not for everybody. My sister and friends think I'm crazy! LOL!

Most important is that baby is born healthy and mama is happy so if the pain/discomfort gets to be too much then there is nothing wrong with getting an epi. Good luck!!
