Solids- what does baby like?

Landon is on food 2 times a day now. He eats about 3 oz in the morning and about 4 oz in the evening. He LOVES vegtables but isnt so crazy about fruit. Well he doesnt mind the jarred fruit but isnt crazy about the homemade stuff. He loves sweet potatoes though. They are his favorites.
He refuses peas. He cries everytime we put them in his mouth. I have tried serveral times.

None here either....but I'm so the opposite I find feeding a baby a total PITA....it's messy and requires effort, I don't have to do much to nurse him. I'm lazy....I admit it Smile

Carter LOVES peaches. He likes his oatmeal too. I sometimes will mix in some fruit with it along with Motts for Tots apple juice.

My child also hates peas. He cried when I gave him a bite. I haven't revisited peas yet but I will try again. We've had sweet potatoes, bananas, peas, peaches, and carrots. (I don't buy into that whole veggies before fruits theory.)

Carter can get a little bit messy when he eats. He grabbed the spoon out of my hand last night and last week he was kicking and I wasn't paying attention and I ended up with oatmeal in my hair. It is messy but fun!

Laszlo LOVE yogurt! I should be making yogurt or kefir myself, but I've given him tillamook yogurt a few times and have to cut him off at about 4 ounces, haha. I know giving babies dairy before 6 or 8 months is a little controversial, but he's done fine on his dairy-based formula supplement and I'm glad he's getting the probiotics.

Other than that, he LOVES bananas and avocado. He likes applesauce and sweet potatoes. He tolerates carrots.

I also don't subscribe to veggies before fruits or completely avoiding animal products before age 1. I AM avoiding grains, any trace of corn syrup and egg whites until 1, though. And honey, of course Smile

Evan was obsessed with yogurt it's still a go to if he's having a particularly crabby day! We luckily don't have food allergies in the family so I'm pretty laid back about what he eats once we start. And now holy crap if he couldn't eat PB we'd be up a creek! And FWIW Evan would not TOUCH pureed peas. But real peas are one of the few veggies he likes - they are little and round and fun

Haha that's cute! I can picture him crying every time the spoon come closer to his mouth!

I started T on rice cereal a few weeks ago, and he loved it at first but now he doesn't want anything to do with it and cries when I give it to him! I just bought some applesauce and peas at Walmart last night, so I'm anxious to see how he likes those!

Do you make it with formula? If so try to mix it with juice instead, Or half juice half water. It will give it a little more flavor. Landon isnt crazy about cereal either. He will eat it if I mix it with juice but even then you can tell her doesnt like it. If that doesnt help try oatmeal or simply wait a little while longer to try again.

My kids have never liked the rice cereal, they have liked the oatmeal better. Maybe try the oatmeal?

You could always just wait a little while longer. If he's gagging and just not getting it perhaps it's too soon for Darian. My first had a really strong tongue thrust reflex so we took it slowly. He wasn't routinely eating solids until around 9 months old. 5 mo is still on the early side of introducing solids. If it's only a flavor thing you can of course try other things but if it's actually gagging etc perhaps it's just too early for your little guy and you should hold off for a bit until he's more ready. There's no harm in that

Trinity just started on sweet potatoes last night. She loved it! I had to let the dog in in the middle of feeding her, so when I got up to walk to the door she started crying because she thought we were done!!! She was grabbing my hand and pulling it to her mouth, smiling, and opening her mouth nice and wide. She has a little tongue thrust still, but not as bad as my son did when I started him on food (3.5 months).

Carter now cries if we eat in front of him. He thinks that if we eat that he needs to be eating too. I gave him a bit of avocado off my sandwich today...and he promptly spit it out. It was hilarious!

Trinity ate some avocado that I mushed up in the food mill yesterday, she was iffy about it. She also likes rice cereal mixed in with her sweet potatoes. I will probably start her on another veggie on Friday. It definitely seems to help her sleep through the night again. She was waking up a bunch and then not sleeping past 6:30, and the last couple nights she has slept from 10-7. Smile

Now you make me want to start Em on solids. He is eating more at night than during the day! I need something to fill his belly. I was going to wait until we were settled in our new house in 2 weeks but I am tempted to start this week instead.

babydreamer11 my DD was intolerant of rice cereal in the same way - 4hours later projectile until empty, so scary that first time!!! Dr said try another type of grain &/or move on to fruit/veggies too. On the 2nd or 3rd feeding of oatmeal she projectiled again, so we just moved on to veggies and she was fine, then fruits. Everything I gave was slow introduction - for 4-5 times straight, journaled & I didn't do more than 1 at a time so I could know if there was a problem. Took awhile b4 I mixed foods - but I was home with her on maternity leave for the great Canadian year off, so I had that luxury. Before 1 year we were back to the cereals & grains and she did fine... so just grew out of it as the doctor had suggested. She had rice puffs, gerber puffs, the baby mum-mum crackers etc etc. This time with DS I am not buying in as much to the fortified pablum boxes.
