Any one know...

How much babies typically grow in the 3rd trimester?

I was just thinking about it, and at 20 weeks wee dude was measuring 15oz. Now, 8 weeks later, he is measuring 2lbs 3oz... meaning that he gained 1lbs 4oz in 2 months. Granted, that was in the 2nd trimester, but he went from the 70% to under the 40%.....My biggest baby was 6lbs, so, from what I can tell, wee dude may be on track to being a pretty small baby (given his short femurs, and the fact that my babies dont tend to grow all that fast....) I really wont be surprised if he is under the 25% at our next growth US at 32 weeks...

I am also feeling the need to get things ready, and I am starting to think that I may need more preemie stuff....

My babies, at birth, have been from 5lbs 14oz to 7lbs 5 oz, and thy all wore preemie clothes for at least the first few weeks. I like to feel the baby when I'm snuggling them, not just the baggy clothes! :)

That's interesting. My LO is measuring small too. My OB said she's thinking he will be less than 7 pounds, but I feel like its too early for her to make that call. My DS wasn't very big, but he was still average. He was born 7 lbs 1 oz at 39 weeks. From the chart it looks like this baby would be about 6 lbs 10 oz at 40 weeks.

From what I get from this graph my wee dude is actually more like the 25%... and if I go at 36ish weeks like I have with the last 2, and he keeps growing on the same curve as the graph, he will be just under 5lbs 8oz... DS2 was 5lbs 8oz then, and DD was 5lbs 5oz... DS1 was born at 38.5 weeks and was 6lbs, so it looks like he was between the 25 and 10th percentile.... wish I could remember how big each of them were measuring at our 28 week appt...

And, with the chance of wee dude having the OI is looking probable, so he also wont grow too fast... so, it looks like I need to check my preemie supply and probably do a little shopping..

I refuse to let them (my practice's midwives and OBs) guess or even give me their thoughts as to the baby's size. My OB with DS was off by 1.5 pounds (he was heavier than guessed by all the 3rd tri u/s) and he measured small at my anatomy scan. Ha. Maybe he made up for it with a growth spurt at 40 and 41 weeks? lol. Who knows what this girl will be. Maybe she'll be very average or maybe she'll have a huge head like her brother.
Although babies put on tons of weight in the 3rd, not so much height. Some, but not nearly as much as the fat they put on.

wow my DS was in the 75th percentile when he was born XD I can only imagine where this little guy is going to be....

I know length wise that most babies are 3" or so off of their final size by 28 weeks, its just the chub they have to put on.

With his femurs being further behind than his sister's at this point I am thinking he may be shorter than what she was... and she was 18 inches. Its all guessing, we have to wait to theyre born to know for sure of course, but I just want to be sure I have something that will fit him right when hes born...

I would just go with your gut instinct. Your other babies were small, I would probably get a few more preemie clothes. My DS was 9lbs 4 oz at birth and fit in newborn for a month. I don't like when the clothes are swimming on them.

according to that chart, when I was in L&D for my car accident at 30 weeks he measured 3lbs 5 oz. So puts him at 50th %tile. My daughter on the chart was born at a little under 25th % and my first DS was at 75%. Interesting. Very interesting.

DD was born at 39.5 weeks at 6lbs 2.8 oz. That put her somewhere between 10th and 25th percentile, which is exactly where this baby was measuring at my most recent ultrasound. He might be a tad bit bigger because he's a boy, but I'm not expecting him to be over 25th percentile.

I understand where you're coming from, Jackie. The ultrasound estimates really aren't that accurate. But it really doesn't bother me when they give me an estimate of the baby's size at an ultrasound. Perhaps because I know there's no way my midwives and very NCB-friendly OB are going to take those numbers literally? I don't know. But I do like to know what their guess is.

At the most recent u/s, my OB told me that the growth charts are based off of midwestern children (mostly descended from big, strong Scandinavians), and that because of our family's genetics (I was 6lb 9oz at birth, and of course DH's side are all tiny Asians), there's almost no chance I'll have an "average" weight baby. He did ask to see me for a follow-up ultrasound because of how small he was measuring, but in his words, "It's what I have to do to be a responsible doctor. Almost certainly you'll have another 6 lb baby who is perfectly healthy and just the right size for your family." I respect that. He has to offer me the ultrasound so he doesn't risk losing his license, but at the same time he's making it perfectly clear that there is no reason to worry.

As for preemie clothes, it was definitely a month or more before DD fit into newborn size. I think she started fitting into 0-3 month sizes just before she turned 3 months old. And up until a month or so ago, she was still wearing some 18 month pants - at 3 years old. :-) My mom went out and bought some preemie boy clothes just for me. This baby will inherit all of my nephew's stash of baby clothes, but because my sister has 8.5 lb babies there was not a preemie outfit to be seen among them (and hardly a newborn outfit) and my mom became concerned that her poor grandson would have nothing to wear for the first month. In fact, my mom had great intuition about DD, too. She insisted on buying preemie clothes for her, even when there was no indication that she would be that small. She said she "just had a feeling" I would have a small baby... and she was right.
