Carson William's Birth Story (pic heavy)
Finally getting the chance to write this!
I had an induction scheduled for 11/27 @ 6:30am. I was really nervous, I didn't know what to expect with an induction since I went into labor naturally with DS1. At about 7:30am they started my IV, I have a horrible fear of needles and almost passed out. I think my nurse thought that when I warned her that I had a fear of needles I was exaggerating and didn't expect me to turn pale white and almost vomit. XD It took me a little while to recover from that. Shortly after they broke my water and started the pitocin, my progress at this point was 3cm and 75% effaced - not much of a change from the night before. Things went pretty smoothly after that, though I was a little upset because I wanted to walk around or at least stand when my contractions started getting a little worse at 10:00am and they wouldn't let me. :( By 10:30am my contractions were much more painful and 1 1/2-3 minutes apart, they told me I could get some pain medication or get my epidural now. They also checked me again at this point and I was hoping that with all the pain I had progressed much further but I was only at 4cm and 80% effaced. I knew I would probably pass out when they placed the epidural so I asked for something to take the edge off in the mean time and calm me down but they said that the anesthesiologist had c-sections at 10:30am and the wait could be long if I didn't get my epidural NOW so I opted to just go ahead and get it. They gave me fentanyl which helped a lot and then placed me epidural. At 11:00 I was pretty sure my epidural wasn't working and the fentanyl had worn off. They checked me again and said I was 7cm and 90% effaced, gave me another dose of something in my epidural and said to just give it time. :/ At 12:00 my pain was UNBEARABLE I could feel everything, it was obvious to me that my epidural wasn't working. With DS1 I got my epidural and felt nothing, this time I couldn't feel it if you pinched me but I could feel everything internally and I could move my legs with no problems. It was really odd. At 12:30pm they decided that I was probably right (no really?) and to redo my epidural, but when they checked me I was 9cm and 95% effaced. By now I was throwing up from the pain and it was much too late to redo my epidural, I was miserable. That last 1cm and 5% just took FOREVER, I think it was probably because I was in so much pain and couldn't relax. Finally at 1:30pm I was complete and ready to push, only at this point I was too exhausted. I really thought I wasn't going to make it but I did and at 2:15pm Carson William was born 9lbs 9oz and 21.75" long! As soon as he was out I felt GREAT, I really thought I could just get up and run a mile right then. It really was instant relief. I joked with my OB that it was "time for the next one!!" to which he replied "I'm going on vacation." :)
Carson is now 1 week old and doing great, the first week was really rough. He started out as a super mellow baby and he stayed like that as long as he was being held. Unfortunately the moment you put him down he would cry up a storm. Also my milk didn't come in until Sat or Sun so we had to supplement with formula due to a slight jaundice that showed up after we left the hospital. He was circumcised on Tuesday (I was a wreck!) but now he's breastfeeding like a champ and we finally have him on a schedule and can successfully put him down to sleep. :D Last night was the first night I actually got more than 2 hours of sleep! DS1 loves being a big brother and has been super sweet with DS2.
