Cord fell off but.....

Sean's umbilical cord fell off two days ago but I'm not sure it's all of it. The center is still black and the skin around it is still pushed up. I don't remember this with my nieces or Patrick... suggestions?

I would continue to apply alcohol with a q-tip to get in all the nooks and crannies!

Zoe's fell off last week. Still has some ickiness like that. It wasn't ready to be off that soon. Not sure why it came off that quickly honestly! I couldn't even find it when it came off! But it's not infected or anything, so I just leave it alone. I was told no alcohol or anything on it, so that's what we've done.

Things have changed over the last few years and now they are saying its best to leave it alone. Keep it dry till it falls off. Im guessing its fine. If its still there at his 2 week appt I would just have the doc look at it Smile

When Piper's fell off it left a piece still on- like a big scab thing. We left it alone and it came off. I remember DS1's doing the same thing. It will eventually come off if you keep it dry.

We have some of that still and had it when the cord was hanging on. I honestly don't remember from Aiden what happened with him!

We had our two week appointment last week. If it's still on at his two month appointment I'll be concerned. The hospital told me not to use anything. the pediatrician said to use rubbing alcohol. I'm confused.
Marissa, blood is normal while it's falling off.

That's strange that we all were told different things! We were told to clean the cord stump with alcohol and even to squeeze the excess alcohol from the alcohol pad down onto the base of the cord.

i'm going to take a look at this site - Kyla's cord fell off this morning and it's red and has quite a bit of puss in it... i called the pediatrician and they told me to just lightly dab it with alcohol and if it doesn't seem to improve by this afternoon to call back... of course i have no alcohol and my mom and husband are both in meetings at this time, and he works about 30 miles away... so i have to figure this one out for myself... my best friend happens to be coming over this morning and i asked her to bring alcohol so we'll see.

yikes. Kellen's looked a bit red and what looked a bit like pus in there. My other 3 had to have theirs removed and they used silver nitrate to close them up, so I didn't know what a normal one looked like when it fell off. I took him in and the doc told me that it looked normal. Is it warm/hot to the touch? or have a bad smell???

If the belly button area is red, I'd have it looked at. ((hugs))

Update:

I took Kyla to the pediatrician and the Doctor said that they see this all the time - she had to specially clean it out, and she said that she RARELY has to do it twice, but if it doesn't dry up and heal then to bring her back so they can do it again, it is all dried up and not red at all anymore, no more pus, no more redness! so she is all better now! phew Smile glad we got that taken care of.
