Emotional Day (happy update post 29)

Went to the base clinic after lunch to confirm pregnancy for insurance purposes and to get a referral. The base labs comes back an hour after my yes/no blood draw to say that I'm not pregnant. At all. In the least bit.
HUH?! What?!
I was not happy to say the least. I managed to keep it together long enough to tell the nurse that at almost 6 weeks pregnant that test should say that I'm pregnant. I have had zero signs of anything concerning and in fact have pregnant symptoms that are due to hcg like nausea. I ask for a beta draw. The nurse will call me back tomorrow afternoon letting me know the results of that, assuming they're in by then (it has to be sent out in town rather than be done in the clinic).
I managed to make it out to the parking lot before crying.
I get home. My husband and best friend (by text) tell me to take more HPTs because if I had an early miscarriage they'd be negative or faint more than likely. I didn't hold my pee or anything and it's mid afternoon mind you.

Reminder, this was my tests with my BFP:

Yeah, I'd say I'm still pregnant according to hcg and they've gotten way darker! The FRER pregnant line is WAY darker than the control line!

Good grief. I'm all emotioned out today.

Any ideas how a blood yes/no test comes up negative with super dark HPTs?!

:bigarmhug: Hang in there! My best guess is that their lab screwed up. There's no way your hpts are that dark without you being pregnant!

Ugh, that's awful! I don't blame you for being a mess!

It might be that the lab doesn't consider the blood test positive until it reaches a certain level (like 25 or 50). Now, a hpt will pick up numbers smaller than that, but it would be really faint. Did you ask for the actual number instead of just a yes/no answer? There's an outside possibility (really, really low probability) that the hcg has left your bloodstream but is still hanging around in your urine. But it's much more likely that the lab messed up, especially since your test is getting darker.

I agree, the lab must have messed up! Your lines are pretty, maybe make an appointment with your OB to see if they can do a pee test in the office and see what's going on?

Sounds like someone screwed up. I would even go to another clinic... sounds like they may not know what they are doing Sad A lot of times if you go in, get the results somewhere else, the ins. will back date the payments... Deep breaths, and maybe go take a nice bath when you can. Sounds like a bad day Sad

Only clinic I can go to since it's the base military clinic. Need pregnancy confirmation to get the referral to see an OB otherwise it's all out of pocket and won't be reimbursed.
Harmony, they didn't do any numbers today. My 2nd draw for the beta is thankfully being sent to a lab out in town.

My levels have to be way above 25/50 at this point if it's a viable pregnancy. http://www.betabase.info/showBasicChart.php?type=Single

I agree, and your hpts wouldn't be so dark if it was just in the 25-50 range. BUT, I have heard of women being told they weren't pg when they were because the lab didn't consider their hcg level "high enough", so it does happen.

Still, the most likely situation is that the lab messed up. Your beta should turn out just fine. Smile

I'm not an expert but the only thing that makes sense is that they screwed up, right? Your HPTs are showing a positive, so a blood draw should be positive. Is the quantitative test being done with the same sample of blood? Would they be willing to draw blood again after you show them your positive tests, just in case that is where the mix up happened?? I am so sorry. I can imagine how frustrated and emotional you are. Definitely KUP and I'm hoping to hear good news from you soon.

I agree, someone at the lab screwed up. There's no way, the blood test would be neg with lines that dark. My hcg was 186 when I had it tested and the test line wasn't even as dark as the control yet. Your test line was so strong it sucked the dye from the control! Try not to worry. I'm sure you'll get good news tomorrow!

I did get stuck twice today. One for the dumb yes/no test and again later for the beta.

I *really* hope that I get good numbers tomorrow afternoon! Otherwise I don't understand what's going on at all.

And btw, google is NOT your friend. I should know this by now, but yet I was googling and everything talks about m/c. Sad

My test lines weren't that dark when my hcg numbers were in the thousands. I'd bet a bundle on lab error. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that. :bighug:

OH man, that totally sucks that you had such an emotional day! They must have just biffed it at the office for whatever reason. Please KUP!

It has to be an error. Even if you MCed, your test would have come up positive if your urine is still that positive. Ugh, I'm sorry that you have this unneeded drama right now.

Cant wait for the update

I totally agree that they screwed up

EVEN if you M/C (which i DONT think you did) with tests that dark still- the blood test would still come up +

Can't wait for you to be reassured!!

No results today. The nurse said she'll call the lab herself tomorrow morning when she gets in and then call me. :banghead:

Crossing my fingers! It wouldn't surprise me that they screwed up. When DH was military, all they had me do was pee in a cup, lol! I hope that she gets back to you first thing in the morning!

How aggravating... Theres no way for you to call the other lab/clinic yourself? Its not even my test and I'm frustrated lol. Hang in there mamma, get DS down for bed, pop in a good movie, and cuddle up. Hopefully you will get your answers bright and early

Ugh I'd be going nuts right now not having the results! I know sometimes going to the military docs just sucks. My step dad is retired air force and so he and my mom always had to go to docs on base when they lived near a base. Now they don't so they can go anywhere pretty much, but when they had to go on base things were so often a disaster. They had to jump through hoops for the tiniest things to get done. I'm still completely sure there was a mistake made somewhere. I'll be stalking tomorrow to see how you're doing. Smile

Argh. I'm so sorry those incompetent nurses (or lab techs) are causing you to worry. There's absolutely no way they did it right if your HPTs are coming out like that. No way. Go on the assumption you are still preggers, relax, and save all your stress up to release on that woman when she calls you back to tell you that you are indeed preggers.

Called me about half an hour ago. The nurse said, "congrats you're 7 weeks pregnant by your number!" Which makes zero sense, right? lol. And then refused to tell me what my number was. Then she was surprised when I said I was switching my insurance over so that I don't have to deal with the base clinic ever again for my heath. HA!

So good news. Really wish I knew how the heck the clinic came up with negative though!

That is awesome, and saying your 7 weeks by the #'s is strange. My just mean that they are on the higher end of the range for where you're at maybe? yeah, I wouldnt want to go back there... obviously they really dont know what they are doing Sad Hopefully now you can switch to the provider that you really want and get someone who does know what they are doing. Congrats again, SOOO excited for you Smile

Yay! But really, how on earth are they able to tell dates by a beta draw? Methinks they have a pretty poor understanding of these things.

So how are you able to switch your insurance over? Is there more than one military insurance option? (Forgive my ignorance, I'm totally clueless about this...)

There's Tricare Prime and Tricare Standard. Prime everything is covered no cost to us, but you have to deal with base care and referrals to see anyone other than your PCM. Standard has a deductible, co pays, etc but no referrals.

Yeah, there's zero way to know how far along you are by beta numbers other than "early pregnant" and "wow, you're pregnant!" LOL. Obviously not the brightest on base. I refuse to even have my PCM be on this base even if I wasn't pregnant at this point. Blum 3

YAY! Glad to hear it was their dumb mistake... maybe it was a good thing, to show you how bright they...aren't, so that you'd switch before they did something REALLY dumb!! :):)

That kind of reminds me of when my nurse called ands aid my numbers were too low so I was less pregnant then I thought...sigh... Why do they have to mess with us like that?!?

:lurk: I'm so glad it was good news and that you're hightailing it out of there. If they can't handle a simple blood test, then I'd hate to think how they "help" women when they're in labor! How annoying that you can't get your number, but at least you know it must be nice and high since you're "7 weeks pregnant." Lol

YAY um hate to say it but 'military intelligence' as an oxymoron was a standard phrase for a reason! (yes i'm a bratt i'm allowed!) sooo happy that they screwed up and then got it right, sort of! good luck getting out and finding someone who knows what they are doing!!!

So glad to hear that at least confirmed you're pregnant. They sound totally ignorant though. Lol. I'm not sure what kind of tricare my parents have but sometimes they really hate it. I'd definitely do anything I could to get away from ever having to go to a clinic like that again. Geez. Glad this ended with good news though. Smile

Congrats, so glad it was a lab error! When I got my beta results it had ranges by week for hcg # on it so maybe that's how they think your 7 wks? Ill have to post it later. Even so, I wouldn't go back there with them being so rude and refusing to give you any information.

*UPDATE* Here's what it says on my lab results;
4wks post LMP = 3-426
5 wks post LMP = 19-7340
6 wks post LMP = 1080-56500
10wks post LMP = 54100 - 288000
18 wks post LMP = 8910-66000
31 wks post LMP = 5310-27400
