    Default First night home

The first night home with a new baby tends to be the most challenging. Babies arent as sleepy as they were thethe first couple days in the hospital, they are eating more, your still tired and recouperating, not to mention your hormones are still going out of orbit.

So, mamas who have their night lights home, how was the first night? Btdt mamas, what has your experiance(s) been? First time mamas, what are you most nervous about?

Also, btdt mamas, any advice, what worked and what didnt? What are you planning to do this time? First time mamas, what are you planning to do to make the first night smoother?

You know, I don't remember much, either. I do remember that DH was wonderful, doing all of the nighttime diaper changes until he went back to work. I also remember singing a lot of lullabies those first few weeks at home - and DH would fall asleep before DD would.

My son was never a sleepy newborn. He skipped right over that stage. We had issues getting him to sleep in the hospital and that continued at home! I remember not sleeping much that first night home. We tried singing to him and everything. And it wasn't like he was screaming and crying all that much, he was just awake and wanted our attention. It was like he was born and looked at us and said "entertain me!" Once he finally did drift off (lord knows what time that was other than waaaaaaay late lol) I was a nervous wreck because suddenly the arm's reach cosleeper which was attached to our bed was too far away for me. Ha ha!
Do note my son was not a sleeper that whole first year. He was a very happy baby just being awake and didn't want to miss a thing! He's slept great this whole 2nd year (mostly STTN), but he's still afraid he's going to miss something.

First night (heck those first few WEEKS) is all about survival. You do whatever works at that moment. This time I plan to cosleep from the beginning hoping that boob juice works its magic and neither one of us has to move! That helped a lot once we switched to cosleeping all night (I was able to dream feed so he wouldn't wake up all the way). If after a few days this baby doesn't do well with cosleeping, I have the arm's reach already set up as a basinet. Oh, and when in doubt the baby swing is ready to go too!

Being Sebastian was born at 34 weeks and spent 3 weeks in the NICU, his first night home along with the following days after was rather nervous and sleepless. he did great sleeping but my husband and I were worried about various things. I mean just usual first child worries and then toss in the NICU experience we were a bit of a mess.

All I remember was that I was TIRED and I sat on the end of my bed or in the glider with him for hours. He truly didn't sleep. He had his days and nights mixed up for 4-5 days. I just remember taking turns with my mom. She would keep him a couple hours and bring him to nurse while I slept and then I would keep him a couple hours while she slept. DH helped some but he had to work every day so we didn't want him to be too exhausted for work. I remember it was a bit of a struggle that first week, but then things finally came together and DS got on a schedule of some sort.

See, now I'm planning on doing the opposite this time! lol We co-slept from the start, but DD and I never could dreamfeed or side-lie nurse without waking up in the morning cracked and bleeding. It was awful. This time we set up the co-sleeper and intend to actually USE IT.

First night home... DH was a dream come true. He set up the bassinet in the living room and put me in my room. He got up in the middle of night, made his bottle... I slept nine solid hours. My first night since before I'd gotten pregnant and my last night since.
