Reasons for measuring large?

Anyone know of any? My ob had to double check my u/s results to verify they didn't catch twins in there. I am 12 weeks but, my uterus is measuring a little over 14. I'm not worried b/c I've had 2 decent sized kiddos and for now am striking it up to that and the dr didn't seemed concerned....was just trying to see if anyone else heard of/experienced it before.

I've heard its quite common when you are expecting your third or fourth.

I almost always measured large with my third-like a month ahead. The fundal height thing can be so variable. The nurse's and the doctor's measurements were always different. I don't put a lot of stock in it. When the baby is bigger it can make you measure larger just by the way the baby is lying. It could also mean you have too much amniotic fluid (happened towards the end of my 1st pregnancy). It could mean, as you said, more than one baby or just that the baby is big...so many different reasons. They usually do a u/s to check it out (t least at my doc's office). Almost every time it's happened to me (save for the high fluid incident) it has been absolutely nothing. No worries.

I've never known an OB or midwife to measure until at least 20 weeks because there are a lot of normal variation of sizes till then. Doesn't really mean a whole lot at this point.

Thanks once again for all the reassurance. Like, I said...wasn't too worried but, just wanted to see if there were any other justifications for my uterus measuring large. (It wasn't the tape measure over the belly measurement-my ob was literally just feeling for my uterus prior to listening for the heartbeat.) *Quick sidenote: he found the baby waaaaaaaay low and in the back. He said "that's right where the boys like to hang out" looks like I've quite possibly got myself another blue model. Smile

My uterus was already well above my pubic bone at my 10 week appt. My doc said that she wasnt surprised with my size, and the fact that this is my 4th. Its like your body just knows what to do Wink With DD (#3) I showed pretty early. With her it felt to me that my uterus/body did all its growing early, then stopped and let her fill up the space lol.

:lurk:
At 17 weeks I measured 24 weeks....but at 22 weeks I measured right on. I think the more pgs we have the early our uterus stretches out because it has had plenty of "practice".
